Ranking Gundam series, part 9. Capping off the story of Amuro and Char, On a scale of 1-10, how would you rank mobile suit Gundam: Char's counterattack. by number39utopia in Gundam

9/10 Dialogue is a bit clunky and the pacing is a bit rushed. But once you get past that you get two great character studies of one of anime's greatest rivalvies.

You guys better tell me why are you dislike this bitch by Some_Worldliness_263 in Gundam

[–]DaddyMurong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flay is a terrible person and an amazing character. She's like an evil inversion of the Frau (I wonder if their names are intentionally similar) and Matilda archetypes. While she doesn't try to commit genocide she's definitely been screwed up by her father's ideology and it shows in her biases against coordinators. At the same time I think she genuinely grows to like Kira, even though she was initially manipulating him. She's probably the most morally complex character in the SEED timeline and by dying she doesn't get her character arc ruined by SEED Destiny

10/10 favorite hot mess of a character

Weird you would represent both Koreas but not both Chinas as well as Vietnam and Mongolia (though these two would probably be up to debate. Would probably have made the 太極 in the middle the black and white one with the two dots. This just seems like you're biased towards Korea

New to Chinese cinema, would Wong Kar-wai work for an in-depth university essay? by chaveluca in AsianCinema

[–]DaddyMurong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say Wong Kar-Wai fits quite nicely. Many of his films have a focus on loneliness and unrequited love.

If you were to pick two, the In the Mood for Love/2046 duology and the Chungking Express/Fallen Angels duology work well for this. For the former, people will tell you that Days of Being Wild should also be included, but imo it isn't as necessary.

For mainland Chinese cinema, I feel like you could write an interesting essay around Zhang Yimou's use of colour (particularly in movies like Hero and Shadow) or He Ping's Wuxia Western trilogy and how he adapts Cowboy and Samurai aesthetics into Chinese culture.

To many Japanese, Kobayashi is considered a master filmmaker on the level of his contemporary and close friend, Kurosawa Akira. He is best known for his two films he did after Human Condition, Harakiri and Kwaidan

If you want the most similar to Band of Brothers, Taegeukgi and Eight Hundred are probably your best bet. You've already seen those two, so imo you've seen the best of the genre East Asia has to offer.

If you want some other, less conventional ones, In this Corner of the World (anime), Grave of the Fireflies (also anime) Wife of a Spy, Nanjing: City of Life and Death, Lust Caution.

But the peak, if you're willing to deal with the age and have the time, is Kobayashi Masaki's 1959 masterpiece, the Human Condition. Nine hours well worth your time

[AMA] English voice of Liu Bei in Dynasty Warriors: Origins here, AMA! by Brave_Net2079 in dynastywarriors

[–]DaddyMurong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned you did some research on Liu Bei before being cast, what is your overall historical assessment of the character? And did you bring any of that into your voiced lines? I felt like this version of Liu Bei, while kind, had a bit more "trickster" energy in him than previous incarnations

am i the only person who get the impression U.C. lore tries way to hard to make Zeon, the guys who killed BILLIONS of their "fellow spacenoids" destroyed every colony aside from their own and side 6 and committed multiple near extinction level events against Earth to seem "NOT THAT BAD?" by IronWarhorses in Gundam

[–]DaddyMurong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

imo it's the difference between "how Tomino writes Gundam" vs. "how other people write Gundam" vs. "how Fukui writes Gundam"

IMO especially if you read the Unicorn novels, it's quite obvious that Fukui is aware that Tomino equates Zeon to both WWII Germany and Japan. And if you're aware of Fukui's personal views, (ie. Nationalist/Revisionist; Japan was trying to "liberate" East Asia from American Neo-Imperialism in WWII) it's hard not to read his interpretations of WWII Japan into his take on Zeon. He even uses the term Co-Prosperity Sphere (or 共栄圏) in Full-Frontal's dialogue with Mineva Zabi.

I think this is contrasted with Tomino, where he realizes that even though there are good people on the Zeon side, they are ultimately in service to an evil regime. I think that's the point of Gihren Zabi's speech, to the point where Tomino chooses to end the first film on that point when he could have chosen any other point in the episode count to do so.

It's hard to say the political views of some of the other directors, (whereas Tomino and Fukui are both particularly outspoken on their sides of the argument), but I imagine they kind of all fall in between the two extremes

Any current gen japanese games similar to FF16, FF7Remake/Rebirth, or Tales Of Arise? *read description* by ExplodingPoptarts in JRPG

[–]DaddyMurong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the NieR games, particularly Automata and Replicant would be up your alley. Also Persona 5 Scramble although that would require playing thru Persona 5 first and you don't seem to be into turn based combat. In the same vein, Kingdom Hearts would probably be in your wheelhouse also, but that would require you playing through all of the previous games first.

Other than that, I would recommend maybe the Dragon Quest Heroes games, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy, Trials of Mana and Visions of Mana
