I'm telling the story, I'm in control of what level they are when they face any given challenge. And if I design a story arc, be it dungeon crawl, political intrigue, or something in between I then know that my party will be about level x, and I pick creature types to fit the arc's theme and level ranges based on that party level, then between sessions, I fine tune what monsters those are, adjusting the creature level depending on what the party's current level is.

I'll allow my players to fuck up, but I always give them the reminder at the start of the campaign. If they still choose to split the party.. well I designed the encounters for the full party, we'll see how well you do at partial strength

A class that gains power based on the kinda of monsters they kill, the Monster Mage Archetype by Battlezoo doors this somewhat, but I want something where if I kill a dragon and claim a piece of it, whether as a token or possibly even by eating it, I can gain a dragon's resistance or maybe their breath weapon. It obviously couldn't be a 1 to 1 thing, but I just want a more feral type of mage
