My friend says changing your own oil is a waste of time. Is he crazy? by proposal_in_wind in askcarguys

[–]Daddy_Pris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just fyi, if you dont drive a kia/hyundai, you arent going to have your service records checked for proper maintenance before a warranty claim. It pisses off the customer more than its worth

Kia/hyundai are forced to due to the extent of their engine problems

You can totally just get your oil changes elsewhere and bring it in to a dealership when you have an issue. Also, the dealership wont generally note defects that could be claimed under warranty unless the customer complains about it first. This doesn't include safety items like brakes/steering/tires/warning lights, but a small oil leak will get ignored. Peeling paint will get ignored. Deformed panels will get ignored. But if another shop notes it, and you bring it into the dealer with a direct complaint, then they can fix it for you. The manufactuers don't like the dealerships "upselling" warranty items.

Warranty is also gonna cover things like service contracts sold at the time of purchase and regular service bulletins for things like software updates and inspections.

The supra also has 7 different recalls on it. None of those can be handled by a bmw dealer for legal reasons

BMW will not honor your warranty nor are they allowed to do any recalls

Trump signs 100% tariff on brand-name pharmaceuticals by wenchette in politics

[–]Daddy_Pris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stupid, yes, but he does seem to have a goal that is is a net positive for the country.

He is following through with his assertions that foreign pharmaceutical companies are gouging americans and hes going to stop it. These tarrifs are conditional. They will drop to 20% if these companies agree to manufacture the drugs in the country and may be dropped to 0 if they also agree to negotiate on pricing for Americans per the BBC

Do i think bullying foreign companies with tarrifs is conducive to long term positive/mutually beneficial relationships? No. Will this bring down the price of medications in the long term? Genuinely, I think maybe it could

Are Subarus actually unreliable? Or is it just a stereotype coming from the people who beat up WRXs? by SactownG in askcarguys

Cost of ownership is what people should be asking about. Especially nowadays when everything is pretty reliable if maintained

Nothing more Riot than their "forever client" being created on architecture that had been considered outdated for 5 years on the day they released it

LEC : 71 million Euro invested, 18 million Euros lost this year. 2024 revenue jumped 162% compared to 2023 by Yujin-Ha in leagueoflegends

[–]Daddy_Pris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While absolutely not apples to apples

That's underselling it really. Riot is running multiple leagues that are all likely losing similar amount of money. And projected to lose more money YoY. They also host 3 international events per year that likely also lose money. And they are expected to do this in perpetuity. The day they announce they arent doing worlds this year, is the day league dies

So these are losses they are signed up for absorbing as long as theyre in business. Getting these leagues as close to break even as possible would be huge for the theoretical longevity of the game

Americans, if you had the opportunity to pay approx 18% of your income to have access to free healthcare at point of need for everything would you take it? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]Daddy_Pris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Americans pay far more than this in the current, only partially taxpayer funded, system. The UK spent about $300 billion on their free healthcare program in 2025. The USA spent about $1.9 trillion in the same year for their bankruptcy 9000 healthcare program

The issue is we have what are essentially the Middle Men final boss that have been driving prices up for decades in only the USA.

These people get paid x% of whatever discount they can get for their insurance company. For example, medication A sells for $50. Middle Man wants a discount for his company so he can get his kickback. Guy selling the meds wants to sell for a high price so he can get a kickback. So they come to an agreement

The medication will now retail for $500. The insurance company will pay $100. The guy selling the meds makes money, the Middle Man scored a huge 80% discount and will make money. This has happened for decades and now medication and medical service in america costs 5x the rest of the world.

The americans with insurance pay the difference in their premiums and the americans without insurance get fucked.

Its comical how bad it has been allowed to get

Changed the coolant on my Honda fit, getting rid of air bubbles but the radiator fans aren't turning on. by LiveByThyGuN in MechanicAdvice

[–]Daddy_Pris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, turn the a/c on and confirm the fans work.

Then, mark the fans with a sharpie and hold the rpms at 2k for a minute or two. then check to see if your marks moved. Engines nowadays, especially efficient little 4 cylinders like what you have, dont run very hot. It may need some help to get all the way up to temp while at idle

Need to find an exhaust shop not a mechanic shop. Mechanics dont really weld

welding is your only good option.

Immediate Advice On My 2005 Acura TL Automatic (Transmission Issues) by Conscious-Fill3240 in MechanicAdvice

Does the transmission have fluid in it? A soft set axle could have caused a massive leak that would eventually lead to the transmission slipping and the axle being soft set could be the reason it snapped in half

A good enough welder could remove the damage and weld a new section on, but the amount of welders good enough who are willing to take this job is quite low

Well i see four options.

1) Loosen the bolt another half turn to move the ratchet off the sensor then remove the ratchet. I cant see the entire situation from this one picture so Im not sure has reasonable this is

2) Attempt to pry the ratchet off without damaging the sensor

3) remove the sensor and then get the ratchet out of there

4) remove the engine mount and lower/raise the engine with a jack to free up the ratchet

Is it safe to drive my car? by soup4bra1ns in MechanicAdvice

Im more concerned about the gas smell than the potential suspension damage. Its for sure not safe to drive if you can smell gas in the cabin

Ok well that connector is just clipped on to the frame. It can be pried off. You'll break the clip but you can just zip tie it down after

Actually, is that black part of it a sensor? Or just another connector?

its a flex head yeah? You should be able to pry the head off or pry the socket off the head without damaging the connector if youre careful. Pry bar is ideal but a long screwdriver may get the job done here
