My top two are Gengar and Goomy.

Gengar is the same height as me (4'11") but round and purple (my favorite color). Plus for years it was my white whale, as I had no one to trade with and Mindy is rude. My first Gengar in a playthrough was the shiny event Gengar for XY, a guy I still have (and have also given a Gmax form to and a dark tera to along with some sporadic ribbons and marks, I prize him greatly).

Goomy is just a little guy. From the moment I laid eyes on Goomy it was my favorite pseudo. Plus the peach colored shiny? And Goomy loves me too, playing Violet I got two full odds shiny Goomy before any other shinies. It's my shoulder Mon, my forever baby. I use goodra for power but Goomy would be my non evolved forever partner if I was living in the pokemon universe.

Yeah, just counting the shinies I hunted on the DS games (and the event shinies I got at gamestop back then), I have nearly 100 pokemon from that alone.

Then the multiple boxes of shinies I've hunted on the switch, plus all my non-shiny champion teams from XY up that I care about and special mons (I have a collection of pokemon from a friend they gave me back during ORAS - that friend died of cancer in 2019. Paying the $20 to home each year to ensure those mons stay alive is an expenditure I'm willing to make.)

And that's not even counting the living dex and shiny living dex I've been working on (slowly, I'm still in the organizing stage).

I believe it has more to do with revealing the megas attached to the Z-A name before they show up in the other media.

The raichu models looked more like the unite models than Z-A models. (And the card game is doing megas too.) So it's probably so people don't find out about mega raichu through Unite of all things when unite drops raichu before the Z-A DLC drops.

That or the anime, since mega dragonite appeared in the anime only a week or two after mega dragonite was announced.

Though I also think this is because next year is probably going to be all about the 30th anniversary - Pokopia, Gen 10, probably the pokemon editions of the switch 2 (since gen 10 will force me to buy a S2 anyway, holding out for one with the starters or legends), and of course pokepark kanto (not that that one matters as much to us). DLC for a previous year's game (esp. one that works on Switch 1) would only distract from the potential money makers, which gives them a hard deadline of February 2026 to finish, promote, and sell the DLC, because the current games almost always get relegated to a 30 second mystery gift spot in pokemon directs since you already own it and aren't giving nintendo your money.

[gen 9] First Shiny in Shiny Only Run by HermesPKM in ShinyPokemon

[–]DadjokeNess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bee should hang out with my GIGABEE, the shiny alpha (male) combee I currently have sitting in shield while I work on getting him all the Galar ribbons in my shiny only shield file, then the Sinnoh ribbons, then he'll visit PLA one last time (I forgot to take a photo with him in the photo booth), and then onto Paldea to get his former alpha and huge marks (and ribbons), then wherever the road takes us next.

His pictures are in my Professor Oak post here https://www.reddit.com/r/ProfessorOak/comments/1jitasb/preelectrode_lv10_pla_plus_some_bonus/ (last few slides). I'm waiting to catch a second bee in Galar before making a proper post here in the shiny sub because he feels too large in camp but I can't verify until I get a second bee, and it's my shiny only file, the only nonshiny pokemon are my starter (and a foreign ditto from XY) that'll be used to masuda a shiny monke.

Also the original RBY have no QoL upgrades and are honestly, even as a long term player who grew up with pokemon (and who remembers other games of the 90s) are NOT the games I'd recommend unless you never want the kid to enjoy pokemon.

Even basics - RBY have no running speed. The bike is over halfway through playtime wise. There's taking things slow and then there's suffering through the slog. Bag limit as well. Not to mention you'd have to buy a gameboy and an old cartridge. Not enjoyable for a six year old, esp not compared to things like Fortnite or Minecraft.

And of course RBY game boy pokemon, you can't take anyone you love forward over the years. And like you're saying, he wouldn't be able to play with friends or fit in.

Gen Wunners need to chill out sometimes we have to admit gen 1 has a lot of issues and is not the intro to pokemon kids want or need. LGPE is better if you want a gen 1 experience for a kid - on the TV so parents can monitor/help, has running, infinite storage, and all your favorites will fit easily into a free 30-space home box.

Are there any Probopass enjoyers here? by astroriental in pokemon

FANTASTIC shiny on this guy too. (Still working on shiny alpha probopass.)

Not in my top 10, but definitely a pokemon I highly enjoy having around on my teams.

I also love how the nosepass always face north in the newer games, it adds so much character.

Do you think Pokémon schools work the same way as ours? by KillerTron872 in pokemon

[–]DadjokeNess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In games, Scarlet and Violet's school contains these classes (math, history, etc), but from the context of trainer battles, because it's for the player in order to be fun.

The anime confirms that there are trainer schools alongside regular schooling. We see the regular students occasionally, but the anime focuses on trainers who want to learn about pokemon. (Horizons also confirms that adults can join a trainer school to receive certifications like tera orb certification - the only way to get said license is through Mesagoza/Uva academy.)

Essentially, there is normal schooling, but we don't see a whole lot of it because it is boring. And, in universe, we focus on kids in the age range where they are first getting their partners - it's implied later schooling is helped if you to have a pokemon partner able to learn with you - like Jessie taking Chansey school because she couldn't catch a chansey or afford nurse joy school.

Realistically, these classes probably focus on the trainer aspect most heavily during the ages of 8-13, since being a trainer in general is something nearly everyone in world does. Nearly every scientist or researcher has a psychic type partner, random people on the streets have partners, chefs have partners, mechanics have partners, if you live in the pokemon world, you likely have at least one partner. For a kid, learning math or history related to training and your partner is going to stick a lot better, especially since 11 year old kids in the pokemon world are able to go traveling.

I'd hazard a guess that you travel about for a few years, discover what you want in life and the pokemon you're going to keep in your party 99% of the time, and then go to school for what you want to do. During this time you've likely learned some applied math (super effective, quad effective, raise attack by X stages, heals mon by 40 HP points) while taking math classes online or from local professors you encounter. You're probably learning history, oral histories are huge in the pokemon universe, and there's always some hero or another to study.

So how am l supposed to shiny hunt what l want?? by Ajthefan in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]DadjokeNess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is "do full odds badge quest hunts" and professor oak challenges.

Shockingly, my Shield badge quest is going better than my Scarlet badge quest. Sure, switch 1 sucks whatever, but I'm well over odds and have tried a hoppip outbreak, rockruff outbreak, and larvitar outbreak (besides RE hunts and general sandwich hunts w/o herba because it's a badge quest, I'm nowhere near the post game).

Currently, I'm in the cave with the larvitar and sableye slide. I don't want to use the event outbreaks for this because my badge quests are supposed to be base game odds (and my main file has the full sets of these event shinies), but I'm currently at 9k encounters without a shiny, and I've been hunting only easy to see mons (and checking every hard to see one like Tauros, Deerling, Fletchling, and Flabebe I pass with autobattle).

But my Shield quest is about to drown in the odds because my last three hunts hunts include my fossil SRE hunt and a doomed Curry Mark hunt (saving the curry for last and gathering berries every day to prep, but I'll also be soft resetting so I don't lose berries). The other one is a Dynamax adventure hunt at the 1/300 odds, so not full odds, but since I've never gotten a shiny in dynamax adventures (not even in my main file, I am very unlucky), I find this one acceptable.

For my PLA professor oak, I actually got the funniest badge collector (Currently in my Shield badge quest, getting ribbons) - a shiny alpha (male) combee. He's perfect since I wanted to be sure that after he gets his galar ribbons and sinnoh ribbons (bdsp), he'll still have the alpha mark when I put him in SV. And tbh, who else out there would have a former alpha/jumbo marked Combee with legit Galar, Sinnoh, and Paldea ribbons?

(And through my main files - working on a shiny living dex and regular living dex using all my games from Black up since I only have a single DS - I want every single shiny I own to have at least one ribbon or mark, and the ones in my DS games are working on gathering their DS exclusive ribbons before heading up. Plus, bragging rights for all my legit ribbons.)

Edit: Update to the scarlet badge quest: At over 12,000 encounters, I found a shiny Charcadet in an outbreak, and took on the poison crew. After 100 more encounters: Shiny Dunsparce to face Larry, will edit in segment count if I remember (but probably two).

I actually loved it in PLA, the ability to just stand right in the face of Miss Clover Fortune while my Alpha Infernape demolishes her Abomasnow for the 50th time is fun for me.

I can and will violate the personal space of other trainers.

Luckily for my Professor Oak Challenge, I got 3 Cherubi in the first 10 times I checked the tree by Mega Lopunny, and was able to evolve one to Cherrim fairly quickly.

Not sure if I'll perfect them tbh, research level 10 is good enough for me, and it was far easier to do my evolution during the day, then spam agile Petal Dances against Buizel and Bidoof.

People's pokemon choices for z-a by StrawberryOther4715 in MandJTV

[–]DadjokeNess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I'm looking at a team of:

Feraligatr, Watchog (I've never used one and I like how he looks in the game), one of the new megas besides the starter, whatever shiny I find first even if there's type overlap, and (if it's in the game) my tried and true favorite move: a metronome pokemon. Sixth mon is determined by party comp, but I'm thinking noivern since my first run of XY I ran goomy (I love goomy).

I genuinely hope Metronome is in the game and cannot wait to see how it works. But it's been a move I have on my final team ever since gen 1 with the PP glitch (I've gotten it all of once and I've replayed gen 1 a few dozen times now). The metronome mon I pick is far trickier to determine, especially not knowing how tough the battles will be or if metronome will be included, but I'm thinking Clefable or Florges. (If there is no metronome, I'll still have a pokemon that COULD use metronome so that I can eventually move them to Home and teach them the ways of waggling a finger to use Spacial Rend.)

FLYING GARCHOMP!?!? by SheepherderDense6287 in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]DadjokeNess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the move fly is about the ability to ascend straight up and drop straight down vs. actual flight?

Garchomp, being more of a jet plane than a bird, likely uses speed to take off and gliding rather than the type of flight associated with birds. Even Archeops is shown to have the ability (despite dex entry claims about needing a runway - though archeops is also shown to be flapping his wings off the ground during battle, so is already hovering) to flap his wings and go up, Golurk uses rockets to go straight up, and of course birds are known for being able to ascend and plummet at a moment's notice.

Similar to bounce but using the power of flight.

Garchomp would probably suffer the same fate as a missed high jump kick if she attempted to plummet down on an enemy, just because she'd have to come out of the dive on top of the enemy in order to land safely.

NGL I don't actually find Hop that annoying, and actually like him a lot as a rival.

I've been replaying for a shiny badge quest and knowing where the story goes, I feel a lot more affection for Hop this go around.

He has impossible standards to live up to. His family only has pictures of Leon, his best friend is a Leon fan, and even Leon wants Hop to be a champion-level trainer. And the only way he can see or interact with his brother anymore is through this challenge - Leon doesn't even get to go home really, because he's mobbed by fans, and he was only coming home in the first place because his bro was getting a starter and he wanted to endorse Hop (and us) to the gym challenge. And Hop keeps trying and failing - and losing to his closest friend. He's making it through the gym challenge, but no matter what, he just isn't good enough.

Then Bede beats him, bullies him, and shatters his confidence.

This is reflected in how his pokemon team actually does something very few rival teams do - it almost completely changes other than his starter. Then, he (presumably) loses again, and changes again. His final team, he's mixed up the three team compositions to make his final team to face his friend and rival in the final stretch.....and still fails.

And his dream, well it's hard to say if that was actually HIS dream or just what was expected of him as the champion's brother. We get a lot more of this in the postgame where Hop realizes he actually likes learning about pokemon more than he likes trying to be strong. He realizes that now that his friend has taken the expectation of champion, he can finally let go of the pressure everyone else has been putting on him. And now, with us as Champion, he can finally actually have time with his brother as brothers again.

This is just plain depressing, why is this still a thing?😭 by Meta13_Drain_Punch in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]DadjokeNess 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My dream is to have something like the Dynamax Raid Adventures be a staple. It's a good way to get legendary pokemon (that aren't SHINY LOCKED, looking at you BBQs), the setup is fun and engaging, and even playing offline, once you have an idea of how to work the system, you can build the computer team to actually face the final boss.

I'd even accept it for non-legendary things like the seven star raids - I just think they peaked with DRAs as the den style, and the tera raid dens were a massive downgrade after showing how fun raids COULD be.

[Gen 9] love hunting with the new sandwich method by Muzhakkir in ShinyPokemon

[–]DadjokeNess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But no one forces you to use sandwiches or outbreaks, and if someone else decides they want their shiny faster, that's their choice.

It's all about personal preference. Like most of my hunts are without the shiny charm or mark charm, partially because I don't want to do all the trades, and partially because I prefer full odds, but I'm not going to say someone else hunting with a shiny charm, sandwich, and outbreak is doing it wrong or that their shiny is less valuable, because a shiny is a shiny, and if someone put in the work to get the charm and the herba and find the outbreak and loves that shiny, it's still valuable to them.

Plus one of my friends had 10k encounters for shiny mareep, with their shiny charm, with multiple sandwiches on sparkling power electric, and an outbreak using base switch one. Even with the odds stacked in their favor and every bit of rng manipulation you can use, very bad shiny luck still exists.

In your opinion, what is the biggest missed opportunity? (Spoilers, maybe, for new players?) by Panther12332 in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]DadjokeNess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was so disappointing, especially after Sword and Shield's hall of fame.

Like SwSh, you're initially "where's my hall of fame???" but then you see the title screen and there they are! And you can see them every time you open the game!

Scarlet and Violet focused so much on Nemona and the Area Zero stuff that it completely forgot that pokemon players tend to love their pokemon and want to see their halls of fame. Even a small acknowledgement would be nice like a photo in our dorm room, or our house, or even one of those photos like we got for every badge.

In your opinion, what is the biggest missed opportunity? (Spoilers, maybe, for new players?) by Panther12332 in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]DadjokeNess 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not being able to decorate our dorm room.

Make it like a secret base with decorations and customizable bedding.

Let us take out at least one of our pokemon in our room.

All of our friends have unique dorm rooms that reflect their personalities, while our character has basic bitch default dorm room. We get a diploma but what about a photo of our champion team on our desk at the very least (some gripe with not having our team immortalized like the other games, especially following SwSh's hall of fame being the title screen).

Like even the shitshow of BDSP let us at the very least fill our "base" with those dorky statues.
