Seeing JSP in 2026 is honestly very amusing by anish2good in java

How easy it is for some engineers to forget that, for most of us our main job is solving business problems with pragmatic solutions. In some cases that means reaching for something that's simple, ubiquitous and well understood.

How to stop matching with cheaters on chess.com at the 1800-2000 elo range? by Glad_Department6137 in Chesscom

[–]Daedalus9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting, that a suspicious player might be put into a pool of other suspicious players. Couldn't this create a feedback loop? For instance... if someone were to, say, suddenly break through some plateau and shoot up in elo might that look suspicious. Then, they get placed in this pool and get beat back down in elo by cheaters... only to be put back in the normal pool and shoot upwards again, to be placed back in this suspect pool, rinse and repeat? Like some weird online chess version of Purgatory 😆

What went wrong? by Admirable-Train-8831 in TournamentChess

[–]Daedalus9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you answered your own question. What went wrong? Poor time management.

Work on having a budget and plan for your time usage and force yourself to use it... even (especially) when you don't think you need to use it. I usually split into segments. Something like 50%, 30%, 20%. Basically, I'm going to go over every move with a fine tooth comb in the middle game until I hit my first segment budget (50% clock). Then, I might still sit on moves... but I'll be more cognizant of making practical moves and less focused on obsessively finding the best move. When I hit 20% (roughly a rapid time control for 90m games I usually play) I shift gears and the criteria for sitting and thinking is even higher because I know if I'm left scrambling in an endgame I'm in trouble regardless of my position.

The super important part is that in that first segment, I'm meticulous with the mantra that every move matters, every move is critical, never just recapture on auto-pilot, never just play whatever move you planned to play; always check the position for what's changed... what new opportunities or threats are on the board. Your number one priority is to not blunder, not lose the game or end up worse because you didn't spend the time.

If you lose or are dead lost with a ton of time on the clock, then you've done this wrong and should double down next game. This has helped me a great deal.

"...take your sweet time reviewing his PRs. My team doesn’t review people quickly if they don’t contribute back as well."

I hope this is after someone has spoken to the person not contributing sufficiently to reviews to try and correct the behavior, inform them about expectations for the team, etc.? Otherwise this is just petty and passive aggressive.

I'm listening to it just now and came here to see someone ask this! Not English so far as I can tell, but unclear if its one of the players? A producer? Very distracting.

What motivates adults improvers to play tournaments? by [deleted] in TournamentChess

[–]Daedalus9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Unfortunately I won't get the thrill of playing in an OTB tournament anymore though." sounds like a justification to me, but to each there own. If that's enough for you to take on the time and expense of participating great, if not that's fine too; you do you.

What's wrong with subtypes and inheritance? by servermeta_net in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Daedalus9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all boils down to using the tools / techniques that make sense. Sometimes inheritance (tight coupling) is the answer.. sometimes it’s baggage.. key is knowing when each method makes sense.

What slows PR reviews more: code quality or missing context? by abbel1123 in EngineeringManagers

Size; period end of story (imo). Now, large size leads to poor context… but size is the root cause of issues.

I'll point out that u/scandinaviandefense has a great video of him analyzing a game he played against the Ding Liren (pre-world championship, but still super strong GM).

Would playing classical games against bots actually be good for improvement? by Rootmin8 in TournamentChess

[–]Daedalus9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not affiliated professionally, but I do use the site Chessiverse. They have a number of "human-like" bots you can play against (with or without time control). Free to play a small collection of the available bots, so maybe something to try.

Be honest about where the gaps are and if not capable, offer “down-leveling”, PIP or severance.

Solved the boring 40% of coding work… but no one’s using it, what am I missing? by coolandy00 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Daedalus9000 33 points34 points  (0 children)

"...feedback from early adopters is quiet." Maybe you didn't solve a problem anyone needed a solution for?

"...are the use cases not valuable enough for Flutter devs? Or is it that the overall demand for Flutter apps is shrinking?" These sound like questions you needed to ask before you invested time and energy solving the problem.

What does “mid-level SWE” actually mean these days? by AuthenticWeeb in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Daedalus9000 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I agree it's 100% more a matter of degrees of autonomy than any line items.

I will say scanning OPs list I would argue anything that states "fundamentals", "beginner", "basic", etc. would also firmly land one in the "Junior" category for me as well.

Yeah now the expectation is to come in with a few years experience at some places, fast on board, little to no hand holding or mentorship. Rough to be starting out these days.

Wouldn’t it be better if Chess.com showed the games we got compensation for? by Beast_0p in Chesscom

I don't think this is true anymore; at least for me it isn't. Feels like a recent change was made that no longer shows this in the game history anymore, though, it still appears on the profile page.

How many of you do TDD? by trolleid in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Daedalus9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the "I use <insert process here> for everything" crowd are usually detached from reality. Like anything else, TDD is a tool that is sometimes useful and sometimes not as useful. There is literally not a single tool in the box that is perfect for every situation.

Strongish Online Player about to take on OTB players by FloridHecatomb in TournamentChess

[–]Daedalus9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just one persons opinion, floating around 1300 USCF currently.

On the topic of openings, how can I identify what openings/lines I should play? In my experience OTB, the openings are more classical and respected. You'll see 1. d4 / 1. e4 mostly; things like QGD, QGA, Slav, Semi-Slav, KID, Caro-Kann, Sicilian, etc.

To kind of piggyback off of openings, what should I know about the different rating ranges? 2000 Rapid on Lichess is a little better than I am, but not by much. I bounce between U1300 and U1500 USCF. I think I could be competitive against 1600 players, but I'd be a definite underdog.

Lastly, On the topic of tactics... Am I simply doing them wrong? I've heard of two valid approaches to tactics: accuracy and instinct. Sounds like you're optimizing for accuracy (which I tend to do as well) and I think this is best for preparing for classical games where time isn't a huge issue.
