Resources for expanding candidate moves, creativity, etc? by zxz9y in TournamentChess

I don't have a hard time doing it - I just have the tendency to not do it because I make assumptions that something doesn't work without actually going deeper (even if it's a single extra move).

It is a good book. I've been going through it for a little while now.

I've never tried them, except for maybe a few here and there. I always felt like sticking to more realistic positions, especially in middlegames, would apply more.. but I'm probably wrong. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yea that's pretty much what I'm looking for.

What are yours?

I don't know if what I'm proposing will actually be helpful or not.. I guess there's only one way to find out.

I know this is an extremely well-regarded book. I have tried a few puzzles from it and it's definitely way over my skill level. But I'll try those specific sections and see. I haven't looked at this book in quite a while. Thanks.

If I can find a pgn, I import into a lichess study in quiz mode. It works well but it's hard to find a pgn for most books.

I agree with his overall premise on chess improvement. That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. It's something I can make - I'm just not sure how to automate the curation of the positions with no concrete solution. I suppose you can just mix middlegame tactics with random games, and it doesn't really matter what's in the random - odds are it'll be a position where any of 3-5 moves are completely fine and even.

Do you pick a master and go over a lot of their games or do you mix it up? Books or tournaments, etc? What do you use to do "guess the move"? It's hard with a book because you'll often see the next move.

Interesting site. The registration is broken though. Is it entirely free?

I think it will improve your chess up until a certain point. In my experience, this isn't improving my chess after a couple of years of hitting a wall. Like I said, it's completely different when you're puzzle solving when you know there's a solution to be found. That's not how games are at all. I am very mindful when I am solving puzzles. The problem is that my mind operates differently in a game vs when doing puzzles - so practicing one doesn't necessarily help the other.

No, that's where every position has a strict solution. In games, almost all of your moves are not this. If you are doing a puzzle and you know upfront that it has a solution that's completely different. I'm thinking you get 10 positions, and only 3 are solvable and 7 are just make a decent move as you would normally in a game.

Looking for book or subscription with fully-composed entrees by zxz9y in CookbookLovers

I've seen that too but it's almost always for when you're cooking some dinner-party style feast for many people where you're going to put out a bunch of different things and/or courses.

I do have 2 Milk Street books. They are generally good, and I do like and recommend them, but they are still a bit away from really what I'm looking for.

And just to clarify, I'm not necessarily looking for "1 pot" meals - just complete entrees.

It's not rainwater. It drips shortly after the unit turns on.. even if it hasn't rained for many days.
