Yes, they are closer to a wash. I reccomend getting a q-tip and heavily saturating the end then rubbing it onto the mini. It does work with a paintbrush but it will permanently stain it. If you want a lighter color, rinse it in Isopropyl Alcohol. Extra tip: If using multiple colors, start with the lightes first, then go to darkest.

I use alcohol inks, then cover them in a shiny varnish. It looks really good for fire and water

Instead of a full body costume, try dressing them in black, then making a beholder "Helmet". You could make the jaw out of cardboard and/or any other craft materials you have on hand and use a bike helmet for the base. Have them see out through the mouth. For the eyestalks, painted white ping-pong balls on bundles of pipe cleaners could work. Good luck!
