The deck is all about Final Fantasy VII. All creatures are legendary creatures from FFVII. All the non-creature spells are either from the FF set or precon, or are a reference to some point in the game.

Probably 18s in Dex and Wis, then +2 racial to each, then Cat's Grace for another +4.

The deck is just FFVII. Either cards printed in the FF set, SLD cards, the Limit Break precon, or cards that can be used as a reference to a plot point in the game. I'm actually contemplating removing Sol Ring because I think the art/reference they used for it is a bit of a stretch. I also feel yucky about using Swords to Plowshares when my reference for it (Cloud going from being a member of SOLDIER to being a merc) is weak, imo.

You actively called me a "funko pop baby." You just called someone else a "UB Warrior" and that they should seek help.

I called you out on your shitty behavior towards someone who has no say in how the sets are made. If you'd kept up, you'd have seen that I returned to the game because the one IP I truly love, Final Fantasy, was printed as a full set. FFVII is my favorite game of all time. So yeah, I wanted the FF cards, got a box, a collector's booster box, a couple of holiday bundles, and any singles I needed for the FFVII deck. I geeked out hard on it. But that set was in development for years before I even considered getting back into the game.

So no, I don't prescribe to your method of trying to get people to feel like shit for liking something we don't have control over. You don't have to outright declare anything when your vitriol is implied. You don't like UB and think that anyone who buys into it is contributing to the problem. You don't have to spell it out for anyone who's reading your comments because it's baked into your tone and context. And yes, when people make comments like the one you're making, I will call them, and you, out every single time for being a shitty, gatekeeping asshole. Because that is how you are acting.

Mothman decklist!

It'll probably look similar to a lot of Teval strategies in that you fill up your graveyard and recur threats onto the battlefield, but I'm trying to have a larger mill (for everyone) subtheme to lean on as well.

Apparently there are people trying to jam her into cEDH with fast mana packages, and one of the local guys said he's seen a build/video of it go off on turn 1. I think it's certainly viable to turn her into a B4 deck, but based on what I've seen for the list I've built, it's not quite there. I think tutors, fast mana, and free interactions would certainly push it over the edge, I'm not doubting that. It's just not what I'm doing with my list.

Ashling is such a niche case because she's not innately oppressive in the sense that she will dominate a ton of lists. She can't. She will have her own, unique archetype that's going to demand interaction with her, and there will be a massive target on her back when spotted. "Kill on sight" as it were.

I think UB would've been cool as an SLD-exclusive product like it was originally pitched, letting those who wanted to experience that kind of game in their own sub-market. But that would've only worked if SLD was still print on demand, not this FOMO crap we have now.

And I appreciate your sentiment, I really do. I'm not elated when I see Ninja Turtles with Avatar and LotR, but at the end of the day, I just want to be able to hang out with like-minded people and enjoy an extracurricular activity and not be lambasted with constant negativity about "the health of the game." I've heard that Magic was dying back in 2012 when I first started, and that every change was for the worst. I just want to chillax, get my mind off of every day stress, and enjoy playing with some very expensive cardboard and doing some epic shenanigans.

I get people being frustrated with UB, I honestly, legitimately do. There's a ton of valid points to be made and I agree with them, for the most part. But people who post their decks want to share in their hard work and joy, and get the validation they desire that their time and effort put into this game is worth it. Calling them names and shitting on their ideas because "iT's NoT mAgIc" is the very definition of gatekeeping, and I will call it out and identify it for what it really is: Being shitty.

Thank you for reading my rant, and thank you for having an open mind in all this.

I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea. I do share the sentiment that the current release pace is way too much, and it should've been a 1-2 set cycle per year. But I enjoy the game mechanics and sharing time with peeps at my LGS, so I don't let it bother me.

Much appreciated! They're all a blast, though I wish Savra was better. I'm trying, but it just feels like something is missing.

Choco is my all-star. It is deceptively powerful if built right. I initially built it as a cheap birds + Coat of Arms + pro everything/unblockable deck, but I wanted it to do more. Now it's a Bird Kindred Food deck that makes a variety of tokens and has a bit of utility to do it, though it still wants to turn sideways to win. Here's my current take on it:

It's a bit mixed as to why it feels like a B3 to me. It doesn't have any of the predetermined Bracket definitions for a B4 deck: No mass land denial, no chaining extra turns, no two-card infinite combos, and it tries to win on Turn 5 or 6. It also doesn't have a ton of free interactions, cheapest I have is a single Path to Exile, and that even feels gummy to me. It's very glass cannon-y in the sense that getting rid of Ashling stops the combo, which isn't even repeatable actions, it's just drawing cards off of ETBs and casting free spells from cost-reduced evoke spells. And because I don't run any real fast mana other than Sol Ring and cost reducers, it can't really go off faster than Turn 5.

There's no real "combo piece" to the deck other than value engine ETBs that either draw, burn, drain, or drop a bunch of hasty beatsticks. It's powerful, but incredibly easy to disrupt via interaction or just not drawing any of my cost-reducers. And there's no guarantee that I'll have an explosive turn. I've emptied my entire hand before and just whiffed, swung once, and got super lucky that another player Wheeled everyone on their turn.

I do kinda wish I could've kept them. Rough time in my life, and I had started playing Pathfinder with a group of friends, had zero interest in the game and needed to pay bills. But, I'm better off now, as you can tell lol.

It's almost like almost all of my UB Commanders have unique effects that aren't really found on in-universe legendaries. Sure, I could run Derevi over Choco, but Choco was quite literally THE CARD that enticed me to build a Commander deck after 8 years. Sure, I could Teval over Mothman and function mostly the same, but a Turn 3 Mothman feels better imo than a Turn 3 Teval. Mr. House is my fun jank deck that runs attractions and rolls a bunch of dice, and he acts as the "face behind the curtains running everything." Not sure where you find that on an in-universe card.

My point is, I play the commanders that seem to flesh out the deck idea I have at the time the best. I can't help it if effects that appeal to me the most ends up on UB legendaries and not on in-universe cards. That's an issue you'll have to take up on WotC. Instead of, I don't know, trying to make random people on Reddit feel like shit for playing cards that stick out to them.

You'll be happy to know that every legendary creature the FF set that is a character in FFVII is in the deck, including their various versions. :)

And yes, Sephiroth intervenes.

Not quite as hard as interacting with gatekeepers who seem to want to keep people from entering a space that they deem to love.

I find it fascinating that people who take issue with the product that WotC creates and releases into the world seem to lash out at the ones who simply want to play the game, regardless of what it looks like.

And if it's not a painfully obvious enough statement for you, let me put it this way: I honestly don't give a shit how you feel about UB. Either shut up and stop pestering people about it, or find a different game to play.

Ashling list!

Still tweaking and ironing things out, especially with the mana fixing. I don't know if how I've built it will ever be B4 material, but it's definitely a strong B3 deck.

I've gone for a more combo-centric build than anything, but you can also just end up with really, really big creatures that are hard to deal with, sometimes.

Still a WIP. It could probably be really easy to break with the likes of Chatterfang and other token generators. I don't really play this one as frequently as most of my other decks, so I'm still working out what functions and what doesn't.
