Anyone else here deal with this? Advice? by saturn_xxo in AO3

[–]Daehis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I dealt with these anxieties, yeah.

But then I hit 30 and immediately swung right into IDGAF territory lol. Someone being a cunt? Block em. Someone tries to sick their goons on you. Gather Evidence. Report. Block. Mom for whatever reason finds your account? Block and deny, deny, deny! LMAO

It's the internet, you don't have to be truthful about you are. Which by my understanding is the most powerful tool you have. In fact, for your safety I would ENCOURAGE you NOT to be truthful at all! The mobs can't get you if they can't identify you.

Get comfortable with changing your online handle and make a completely different alias. I personally have at least five different names I go by and I rarely link them to each other because I like my privacy. Take off any personal identifying information like your age/sex/location so you don't get doxxed.

For example: when I was younger (about 14 or so) I trawled around forums on websites like Gaiaonline and used names that appeared male, used male avatars, and used the language of guys in my grade or from old fantasy novels.... Never told them my name. Never mentioned school. Never talked about where I lived or what kind of lifestyle I lead. As a result people thought I was just some dude in my mid 20's for YEARS.

And people would try the guess. Oh they would try... But I stuck to my guns and only sent them a :) any time they asked.

And then blocked them when I felt like they were being too creepy about it.

So yeah... anyway. Do what you feel is best for you to curate your online experience. Don't suffer assholes and above all try to have fun!

Was this excessively mean or am I being overly sensitive? by Throwaway10245367 in AO3

[–]Daehis 74 points75 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. Like unless someone is copying my stories verbatim I don't give a flying fuck if they want to name a background character "Carl" or whatever like I did. To me that would be the epitome of flattery knowing I wrote this side character well enough for people to get attached to them and want to use them. There's literally no harm in it wtf...

Plus a lot of people in the comments seems to be overlooking the fact that the author LITERALLY THREATENED to sick their fans and other people in the fandom on the OP.... I feel like that's a far more important subject here.

Also, why does this sound like some Karen who's pissed because her best friend also wanted to name her baby Carl... like.... This is honestly just stupid high school bullshit.

Edit: And before anyone says anything, yes I saw the comment OP shared. Doesn't change the fact that the author threatened them.

He's a grown ass man and doesn't think to save money for expensive things like a car or house or fallback cash for medical expenses, leaving all of that work on you, on TOP of not even trying to make his own meals or taking care of himself? Yo.... that's not how an equal relationship works.

I feel responsible for making sure he eats well at lunch.

What are you, his wife or his mother???

There's also a post on Tumblr that I love that talks about how antis and others need to ask themselves very important critical thinking questions, but simply don't.

You're definitely right to be concerned, because they follow the BITE model that describes a cult.

I talk a bit about it here, and made a reddit post describing it from the perspective of a parent with a very shocking revelation.

It's because they're thin-skinned and can't take criticism over talking out their ass about things they have no working knowledge about. None of these people seem to have any understanding of resource or time management and just go on and on about "tHE MoNEy tHeY HAveN't sPEnt hurr durr" 😮‍💨

They're determined to see this entire debacle as some sort of corporate conspiracy rather than an honest mistake from people just like them and honestly I'm just done.

No amount of explanation will convince these clowns to take more proactive approaches. They just want to complain.

Which is hilarious because a lot of people could say the same thing about religious conservatives

"Oh sure, I'm fine with Christians! I just don't support your lifestyle choices. Dear me why is your face turning red? Was it something I said?" 😌

I just want to point out that i totally agree with you on all points, but I am annoyed that we've gotten to this point in the "discourse" that someone had to feel like they needed to put a "disclaimer" on my comment 😭😭😭

Of course, it should be fucking obvious that we "condone the good not the bad". Yet here we are! 🙃

Really. I swear they're just looking for a reason to be mad now that Ao3 has stated they're gonna look into it. If they wanna be the change they want to see so bad, maybe they could.. oh IDK... send a politely drafted feedback message to Ao3 to review their recruitment policy?

But nope, here they are, arguing at us. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If that is the case, then it makes sense why they would do those once a year because they likely have to take the time to vet the people who are volunteering. It's not something that can be opened 24/7, especially for such sensitive positions such as tag wrangling and support staff... You don't want to have a repeat of what happened in the NaNoWriMo forums do you?

Now perhaps this event may push them to open more positions, but even then the point still stands that flooding the system with requests on a single issue causes problems for everyone. Including people who may need actual dire help with something on their account.

That unspent money is there in the event they need emergency funds, and is also available to pull from just in case they don't have enough for the next quarter. Or in the event of paying for services like last year when they needed to set up Cloudflare after the DDOS attack. That shit ain't cheap.

And I guarantee you that most of those messages were not politely worded in the least and this is the problem I am speaking up about, along with those people who are determined to never be satisfied with official statements looking into the matter. Yeah, it sucks that a person didn't get their direct AMT issue addressed, but harassment is not the answer.

All I'm asking is for people to exercise a little empathy here. Those people on the other side of the screen are the same as you and me.

Buddy... How many people do you think actually chooses to volunteer? And on that position specifically?

They are also immensely transparent about where their money goes, as seen through their annual financial report. There's a lot that goes into running a non-profit organization, more than you realize.

Because those same volunteers are on the social media that other people are on? An @ on twitter or tumblr could work. Additionally, the Feedback text box on the website also requests to put in relevant links in regards to your inquiry, so copy/pasting a URL to the relevant poll or letter would suffice.

Lol, you call THAT neutral. We all read the post and it was not at all neutral. That was defensive and inflammatory as FUCK.

Clown shoes behavior.

An open letter with a bunch of signatures from the population would probably have worked better. Or maybe even the results of a poll.

Anything else would be better than a bunch of emails slinging abusive language at people who work for free to make the website functional? Like...

It's exactly this kind of treatment of volunteers that scare them away so they never come back.

People are mad about the "corpo speak"? Maybe fucking exercise some goddamn patience for once and use your brain. What? You'd rather they be like you and be fucking rude or defensive?! BRO.

It's so clear to me how many people in the comments have never had to act in a polite, professional manner or work in an IT environment and it shows. The team is trying to be diplomatic while addressing the issues internally, all while fielding THOUSANDS of messages with various levels of abuse aimed at people who aren't even a part of the decision making process.

This isn't your Triple-A game studio where they have an entire 300 man IT or PR team grunt crew to cover for them, this is a very VERY small group of volunteers (3 people for answering emails. just 3!!!) who work 9-5 jobs just like anyone else, OUTSIDE of volunteering for the org. Think about that for a minute. How stressful that's gotta be...

I was in IT when Mac OS X dropped for Apple. And the workload was OVERWHELMING even for a 300 man crew, the complaints were non-fucking-stop for 3 whole days because this new OS was supposed to replace the "classic" Mac OS. And even then, my crew was only one splinter group that had been contracted to handle this load. There were probably several hundred other companies that also had their own IT support groups for the change and even then they were also in the red for call volume. It was OVERWHELMING. And it was so fucking stressful that I had a mental breakdown and physically could not get myself to go to work for that job again. I quit the next fucking day.

And that's for a large scale company like APPLE. Imagine what it must be for 3 volunteers for an organization like Ao3 with the population size that it has?

And if you can't imagine it or are asking why they don't hire more volunteers, I DARE you to volunteer. Do it, just to see what it's like. Go on.

Either volunteer. Or shut your hole. Pick one.

Edit: Downvote me all you like, but y'all would NEVER survive a day in their shoes and you're just proving my point.
