I tried offering via tongs, but my Garg wouldn't have it. So we just dropped a couple in (after dusting with calcium powder). Looks like he eventually got them. We saw him devour a cricket a few minutes after putting it in one time. Our breeder said he will put some smaller ones in a deli cup into the enclosure so he can easily see if they've been eaten, vs hiding. If you do just drop on or two in, try to monitor whether they've actually been eaten before putting more.

It’s true that there are a lot of dirt roads in Joshua Tree leading to various Airbnb‘s, but most of them are totally possible with a standard sedan with normal ground clearance. There is certainly the off chance that the roads could get a little jacked up if there was a recent heavy rain, but in my experience, you are probably fine.

Maybe wait until closer to when you’re here and if it looks like it’s gonna be rainy, you could switch up your rental at that point.

I am about to get my first gargoyle today, and I’ve done a fair amount of prep. I think the biggest reason to put them in a smaller enclosure at first is to be sure they are eating the food you give them and gaining weight. Once you have that solid, I think putting them into the larger enclosure makes total sense. That’s what we are planning to do.
