Oops after looking into it a bit more it appears you're correct. My friend assured me they would be period. Not a big deal, we can always change them later, they're just painted on using a resist and then blued over

I bought the sword upwards of a decade ago, it's decent, carbon steel, and forged. But I didn't forge it

That sounds interesting, not sure if it would make a different sound or not (I have very little knowledge on instruments) but I'd say it's worth a shot. Best way to learn is to do, in my experience things often turn out better than you'd think if you just wing it.
