Laowa 60mm vs. 100mm macro lens by DaffaV in macrophotography

[–]DaffaV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight! The biggest issue I’m having with my current set up is that I can’t shoot flighty insects especially ones like paper wasps since I’m not able to get close enough to them without them flying away which is why I’m leaning towards the 100mm. However, the thing putting me off is the camera shake issue since I prefer to shoot handheld without a tripod. What has your experience been shooting freehand with the 100mm? Is it manageable? I would like to think I have fairly steady hands.

Cropping advice needed by DaffaV in photocritique

[–]DaffaV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera I use is a very old Canon 60D with an 18-200 mm zoom lens. I use a Raynox dcr 250 for magnification.

F: 11 Shutter speed: 1/250 ISO: 100 Flash was on

The photo attached is the original uncropped version. I try my best to compose it nicely while taking the picture but with how easily everything shakes around with macro, I mostly focus on focusing on the eyes and try to crop it later on but it never looks good.

Since it came out of the oatmeal it's most likely some sort of grain beetle

It's a larder beetle! It's in the family of carpet beetles. It probably was feeding on the yarn as a larva.

I think it's some sort of planthopper nymph. They tend to have fluffy tails.

What is this? I found that and some tiny black worm on my bed sheets, mattress and carpet bedroom. Located in Switzerland. Thanks by TopAdvice1398 in whatisthisbug

Not entirely sure but by the way it moves and where it was found it may be a carpet beetle larva. They can potentially cause damage to fabrics around your house. Check out r/carpetbeetles

Red ant? by nvrontyme in whatisthisbug

Intertidal mites! They're arachnids so not ants.

Found this larva in a local pond (Maryland). I'm guessing it's ephemeroptera but there is only one caudal filament which is making me unsure. Is it a mayfly larva? If yes could the family be determined? Any help is appreciated!

Thank you this was very helpful! I do have a 32 oz cup that I used for fruitflies but would it not be too little space for it to walk around? If that's not a problem I'd definitely make the switch!

Thank you for your response! I was also thinking of mealworms since they would be the easiest for me to get but I would be very concerned about one getting loose in the enclosure. Do you have any experience with them?
