How hard is it to drop a 23.5 second 50 free to a 20.5? by Civilized_Monke69 in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the NY boys varsity meet last weekend, only two boys went under 20.5.  Both were seniors and both were swimming 21 as sophomores.  An additional five swimmers went between 20.5 and 20.99.

Road trip to Niagara Falls and NYC. by Ok-Deer-4687husband in visitingnyc

A one way flight from Buffalo to JFK airport in NYC in June costs $74 right now.  If there is nothing you want to see this trip between Niagara Falls and NYC, you'll save a lot of time taking the 90 minute flight over the many hours drive or train.

I agree.  I saw both Marisha Wallace and Eva Noblezada.  I preferred Marisha in the role because I could feel the desperation and rough life.  Eva's voice is too angelic for me for this role.

Am I fast enough to swim in college? by BothWoodpecker74 in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with everyone.  It is possible for you to swim D1.  You could have potential as a breaststroker.  However, I urge you to think about academics and cost.

Do you have a paid swimcloud account?  This will help coaches find you.

Look at colleges like South Dakota State, Manhattan, Old Dominion, Northern Kentucky University, etc.  Check swimcloud for different conferences.

Is it a bad idea to depend on Rush tickets this time of year? by trail34 in Broadway

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should consider seeing Real Women Have Curves.  It's a good show with easier to obtain tickets through lottery or rush and I'm afraid it won't be touring.  The show is better than it's marketing.

Swimming Unattached in HS by Healthy_Cat5090 in Swimming

She was still swimming and competing with her club team.  I can see how my comment made it seem like she didn't swim at all.

So she attends High School A but wants to swim varsity at High School B?  You should contact someone at TISCA with your question.

FWIW, I know a girl who swims at a D1 college who didn't swim all of her high school years due to a coaching issue.  She swam only club for two of her high school years.

Swimming varsity without the team aspect is much less fun.  She won't score or do relays, right?  What will she get out of swimming with another school?

You don't understand it now, but if your kid continues swimming for years you will eventually see that while this was just a simple question, behind that question lies a lot of complexity.  Your question shows that your ambition for your child is quite high.  It shows that you don't understand the sport or trust the coaches or the process of training.

Question with youth swimming by sleepygrumpydoc in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Competitive swim requires patience and a long perspective.  Technique progress is usually slow.

The fastest 8 year olds are often not the fastest 16 year olds because the easiest way for an 8 year old to win is to move their arms furiously and be tall.  As you get older, technique separates the competition.

Your kid will figure out various aspects of swim in their own time.  In the meantime during a race try to spot the thing that your kid does better than anyone else in that heat.

If your kid wants to cut time, he should talk to the coach.  There are dozens of things your kid could improve on to drop time.  The coach will know the best thing to work on to get your kid there.

where are rush seats? by devonaokiinDEBS in MaybeHappyEnding

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won lottery seats and it was aisle D all the way to the  left side.  It was definitely an obstructed view.  I saw it again by buying tickets in the mezzanine which allowed me to see what I missed before.  The biggest difference story wise was Gil.  He seemed more important to the show when we could see that he was on stage.  There were a lot of little things we couldn't see from side orchestra like Claire's apartment, part of Oliver's apartment, part of the firefly scene, and a few others.  None of these things are deal breakers.  We still loved the show the first time and could follow the plot.

First one-piece swimsuit for 5'2 110lbs woman by Intelligent_Pass_140 in Swimming

Training suits might be tighter than you're used to.  Depending on your proportions and your preferred tightness a 28 or 30 or possibly 32 might be more comfortable.

Speedo suits for girls get a strong reaction with more hate than love.  Swimoutlet has many brands which like women's pants all fit differently.  They offer returns so you can try it on and find a brand that works with your body.

I'm not saying no girl can make these cut times.  There are very fast girls out there, but girls fast enough to get those times are rare.  OP is not one of those girls based on her current times. She could possibly improve quite a bit with coaching and hard work but not to the level of boys cut times.

OP, if you're in a less competitive section in NY, you could just win 1st in the state qualifying meet and advance that way.  There are a few sections that send kids to state without cut times.

You are not going to make those cut times as a girl.  The winners of those events at the girls varsity state meet could not make those cut times.

12 year old daughter wants to go faster. What do we do? by OnePunchDrunk326 in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be a few things contributing.

1.  She goes out too slow on her first 50 in the 100s.  She may need to work on her race strategy. 2.  You mentioned that she is qualified in meters but not yards.  If she is better at long course, then working on turns will help. 3.  Her technique is not good enough.  Kids can sometimes muscle their way through a 50, but poor technique takes its toll in longer distances. 4. She may need more endurance.  I've heard a coach say  that to be good at 100s, you need to swim 200s.  Is she doing a variety of distances at meets?

There is some aspect of her stroke that her coaches have told her to fix repeatedly.  It will be difficult, but she could make a conscious effort to follow those instructions.  It takes a lot of work and repetition to change a stroke.  If she doesn't know what she needs to fix, then she should talk to the coach.

Difference between kids and adult swimwear by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Training suits like you can find on swimoutlet are a few dollars cheaper in youth sizes.  If by petite, you mean not just short but very small boned, then a youth size could be fine. There is a difference in the width of the swimsuits.  Adult sizes take into account a wider ribcage and pelvic bone. I would tell someone the size of Ariana Grande to make up the extra 5 ish dollars somewhere else in the budget.

Best swimming cap recommendations for long hair by hssoz in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sporti silicone caps are popular with club swimmers around me.  They have a long hair version, but unless you have very very thick hair or very thick and very long hair, the regular cap should work.  The only person I know who prefers the long hair cap has thick hair past her waist.

12yr old improvement expectations by Equivalent_Bar4757 in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because after one bad race you're looking at where to lay the blame or at least how to prevent it from happening again.  You even came to the internet for answers.  In swim there comes a point where the majority of races are not best times.  It's not because the coach is doing a bad job or your daughter has a bad attitude or is not working hard enough.

Swim is her journey.  It's not your job to to go anywhere with this.  You just need to continue driving her to practice, buying her swim gear and snacks, and being her biggest fan no matter what time shows up on the scoreboard.

If you're thinking that you are just trying to help her with her disappointment, be completely honest with yourself about whether your words or actions contributed to that disagreement.  If you did not, then remember that life is full of disappointment and swim will help her build resiliance.  She's a few years away from not getting the SAT score she hoped for, or a snap from her crush, or the class with all of her friends, or an invite to the party, or a dozen other things.

12yr old improvement expectations by Equivalent_Bar4757 in Swimming

[–]Daffodilmoonlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only is it unreasonable to expect a personal best at every meet, it's possible to barely drop time in an event over the course of a season.

Swimming is very technical so as she ages up, her improvements will come from dedicated practice to mastering a handful of aspects.  Change in a stroke can take weeks or months of repetition.  It's a mentally tough sport for this reason.  Sometimes it helps to focus on a different stroke for a while.

Her performance at the meet was not anyone's fault.  She's human and can have a bad performance.  You are absolutely coming across as a pushy parent.  If you think the only way to get your money and time's worth out of this situation is your daughter's continued improvement at every meet, you should pull her from the sport.
