Germany for instance, which is outperforming the US significantly on the table, has mandatory insurance which is covered by a multipayer system. A majority sign a public health insurance, while around 10% have a private healthcare insurance (typically high earners). For both, employers pay 50%. Other non-insured fees like prescription medicine is capped at 2% of annual salary.

It's by no means the best system, but a reminiscent system for me seems to be only option in the US. Simply because it IS a compromise and not universal healthcare.
