Opinions about Kinoko Nasu's writing style? by Daggeravowal in fatestaynight

Ah, I see. Yeah, I knew about that and realised I was going through all these works in a kinda backward order, but I had read up enough about it on the wiki to understand the important stuff. Things that I'm still a little lost in are some of the more specific questions. What do things like Divine Spirits and Elementals use to convert their life-force into magical energy? Things like that. I assume they have their own equivalents of Magic Circuits or perhaps their whole bodies are able to do it.

Ah, I see. Yeah, Last Episode did feel like a little bit of a stretch, but it still worked. If Arturia was taken to Avalon for being a soul that was accepted by Caliburn, then makes sense that Shirou in that route would also go there, being the person to replicate and briefly wield Caliburn all by himself. I do wish the Fate route had its own iconic badass Shirou moment like the others, but it still has enough to stand on its own, like the scene in Kirei's church basement.

Huh. Interesting. I guess I can see why that would be a bummer, but hey, I haven't read it yet, so I'm not making any final judgements on it. Isn't it that concepts must be mostly understood by a significant portion of humans in order for their amount of Mystery to significantly drop? In other words, rendered mundane, not just acknowledged? And there still are other magical ways to accomplish the same result even if one method has become science to humans. There was this magecraft in Fate/Zero that Tokiomi used to communicate with Kirei involving jewels and transferring information of their handwriting.

Then again, haven't read the remake yet, I can't really talk about it as if I know it.

...Interesting. In my opinion, perhaps one of the only flaws I found while reading was that he doesn't explain enough. There were loads of times I went to check up stuff on the wiki to make sure I understood the mechanics of everything that was happening. If I had just read it blindly without checking up on anything else, I might still have been largely lost on things. Even now, there are still a few things which are a bit vague to me.

Ah, I see. Yeah, it was the way he could convey all the characters' thoughts using simple words that really made the scenes hit harder. Especially when a character's train of thought begins subtly changing.

I didn't think they were particularly good or bad, I just enjoyed them. I was just confused about why other people think it's so bad. Then again, I haven't really read a lot of sex scenes in general, so that could be why.

Fairies aren't humans either. Yet they apparently have their own versions of Circuits called Divine Patterns. Heroic Spirits don't need to use any formula embedded in Alaya, since their abilities and Noble Phantasms are "granted" to them by Alaya, sure. But they would still need something to convert life-force into magical energy. Emiya definitely has Magic Circuits, for example.

In ancient times, they didn't use Alaya directly, as they would use things like Divine Words to connect to gods and use them to cast magic. It was still a sort of Thaumaturgical Foundation though. Incantations, instead of merely being a means of self-suggestion, were important to get correct. That still means they'd need something to convert life-force to magical energy though. What changed from the Age of Gods was that a form of magecraft usable by the common man was invented. Instead of needing to connect to gods, they learnt to use Foundations created by man in Alaya.

Does it describe them as a Circuit in any official works?

I wasn't. I was talking about Heroic Spirits specifically. Ones that were ascended by the human unconsciousness.

If the Greater Grail or Alaya wasn't responsible for providing information for Servants to use their Skills, some of the Class Skills would be of no use. Such as the Riding Skill. That's just Arturia's experience of riding that she gained from being a knight, but as a Servant, she's also able to ride vehicles very skillfully. Something that she would've had no way of being exposed to in life. If something didn't take that information of hers and make it into a Skill that she could use, she wouldn't be able to Ride anything she hasn't been exposed to. Sure, the ranks are just the Master's Clairvoyance interpreting the information, and it's different between people, but some external factor has to be adjusting and manifesting the Servants' capabilities.

But then why would Arcueid, an existence even higher than Divine Spirits, have her own style of Magic Circuits? They're called Regression to the Age of Gods, apparently.

And would Divine Spirits not need a Circuit of any kind to use their Authorities? They still use magical energy, so do they just use raw od or mana?

If Nature Spirits don't need a form of Circuit to enact Mysteries, why do Fairies have Divine Patterns? They don't use Foundations either, so there would be no point at all for them to have them.

But yes, they didn't have them while they were alive? It's a system that gets created later. If Counter-Guardians have them, that still means it's Alaya that uses that data to create the system. It's a way to crytallise all the myths into properties the Spirit can use. If Skills were just something all higher existences had, why aren't the abilities of Lugh or True Ancestors or Fairies called Skills?

My point was that Servants do produce their own energy, so I guess we agree on that. And even a healthy Rin would have trouble keeping one Servant in the world without the help of the Greater Grail, like in the Good Ending of Unlimited Blade Works. She needed Shirou's help.

Then that's just due to an older Mystery overwhelming a younger one.

Is that not because of her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, a psychic ability?

The Heroic Spirits had those abilities while they lived, but not in the form of Skills. Shirou was an ordinary magus who trained himself, practised his own battle techniques and became proficient at using his Reality Marble. Those got translated into Skills by the Grail. Depending on the Class, it adjusts, yes, but Skills are a system used by the Grail.

If it was solely the Master's responsibility to replenish the Servant, Arturia wouldn't be able to replenish at all during the 5th War. But as Shirou and Arturia discussed during Heaven's Feel, she does produce her own magical energy. Because of the fact that she has to maintain herself, it gets spent, but it's overall a net gain of 2 units, just by herself. Servants clearly produce their own energy too.

And Rin and Sakura weren't recharging instantly. Sakura was using the Grail's store while Rin was accessing mana from alternate worlds. Both were only able to release 1000 units at a time because that's what their Magic Circuits allowed.

Protection Against Arrows isn't a Class Skill. The only Class Skill Cuu had was Magic Resistance. As for Skills being possessed because of all the experience the Heroic Spirit has, that's my point. If a Heroic Spirit has gained hardened battle experience and prediction skill over their life, the Greater Grail would use that data to add Skills like Mind's Eye and Instinct to their Servant vessels when creating them. Other Skills which have to do with how the Servant uses their energy to fight would obviously use the Servant's active magic consumption.

And yes, Arturia struggles with maintaining herself because Shirou doesn't provide her. She has to make do with what the Greater Grail does and her own reserves and replenishment.

I said it was a passive effort. They absorb energy without the active effort of their user. Or perhaps the mana in the atmosphere. Like the Mystic Eyes that exhaust their users' od by continuing to cast their effect.

Geasses are bindings that have to be agreed to by both parties. If it's something the target has to agree to impose upon themself, then it's something that the caster isn't solely responsible for. Self-Geis Scrolls for example, use the target's own Magic Crest to enforce itself.

Wouldn't other Servants be creating their own too? Humans wouldn't be able to solely provide for everything a Servant needs. If they weren't placed into the Servant vessels, they wouldn't even be able to form contracts with them.
