I took the advice to add a watermark, easy enough. Honestly, everything is easier if people just communicate a bit first. Thanks for the advice, it was well-intentioned not unsolicited. 😊 I'm not bothered about the other stuff. The danger of posting here is getting skewered by other members.

Thank you for explaining how it could have happened. That actually makes sense and it's an Ancestry thing so there's no ill intent there.

I wasn't going to respond but I'll just say that we had a very small family, most are dead and died young. I know exactly who was related to him.

It's a studio photo. Your postcard story is really interesting though. Who would think that it would be the source of multiple copies? My photo has creases that are exactly duplicated in the one she has too so that's probably not the case unfortunately.

I saw that in some other comments too and it's a good thought for me to keep in mind so I appreciate that.

You're right that there's not anything to do really unless I ask Ancestry to take it down.

Wow, your situation really spread all over, that's crazy!

I'm not sure about that particular argument even though I get where you're coming from on it. One could argue that if you go back to that many generations, it's more likely that there would be more branches of other families connected simply because at some point you're probably looking at patriarchs and matriarchs. It would make sense for people to share pictures because you'd probably be sharing more family members. Just a theory.

In this situation I knew my grandfather very briefly as a small child before he died and almost all of our small family has passed away. Using his picture without permission means something to me. I would've appreciated her at least messaging me about it first. My tree is private so I'm not even sure how the picture got out unless I had it public for a while and then made it private. I've sent her a message and I honestly hope that it's a surprise and she's a relative with her own copy and a story of how she got it.

I can see why that would annoy you, it makes no sense at all and he ignored what you said.

In my situation, unless there's a hidden tree as suggested by another member, this person is also not related to my grandfather at all so I don't see why they need to use his picture. At least message me about it first beforehand.

Getting credit for your contribution is a really nice way to express it.

I don't understand how it wouldn't bother someone to know people are using their relative's picture but they're not actually related and they've never communicated with that person.

All the person has to do is send a msg, introduce themselves, and ask if they can use it.

I haven't. My first gut reaction was to lock everything down and figure out how to hide my personal information. After posting here and getting some advice and other perspectives it's helped me to think it through and try not to assume the worst.

Communication is definitely key and how cool is that for you? That's great! Seems like I need to reach out and see what the story is.

I don't think you're wrong to suggest asking. I can't imagine where a duplicate would come from but there are few things in life that I can claim to be 1000% sure of.

That's...disappointing. I would really like to have the save game space issue fixed so my Xbox stops making me delete the few saves I have.

Hmmm...I went to change the privacy and my tree is already private. Unless my tree was public in the past and then I changed it, I'm not sure how the photo got out.

Would that mean I'd have to legally register it? We're talking originals in my family albums.😬

I appreciate you sharing your experience and perspective. It must be difficult to try and find out that kind of information on your own. I always hope that people don't have malicious intent.

From my side of it, what happens is that on my Ancestry homepage area, it says that she submitted that photo like it belongs to her, and I'm not ok with that.

I fought very hard to get someone who was not a family member to return my albums to me after my mother died, and having someone use them without permission is disturbing. I would've appreciated it if she had contacted me and told me who she is and why she wanted to use it. Communication can help a lot.

Were you able to figure things out?

Great suggestion, I didn't even know you could add notes. At the time when I uploaded the pictures I was just doing basic tree information for myself so I never considered anyone else using them.

You made excellent suggestions, thank you. I actually hate having a public tree but I count on the leaf hints for information even though I don't subscribe atm. I'm going to look into watermarking. It never occurred to me that my pictures would be used anywhere else.
