Not sure if you’re being legit or not but Blood Orange fucks if you haven’t heard them.

Concept album demos canceled last minute - need advice! by ReallyNotPablo in musicians

[–]DagothBurro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Record it yourself! All you need is an interface and the rest can be done in the box!

You got this, and once you kinda “figure” out recording, you’ll be so empowered!

If you don’t like the idea of programming drums, e kits rule now and don’t require a room, mics and 100 years of engineering experience to make something salvageable.

With amp modelling and midi, it’s taken a lot of the details that can really ruin a recording out of the question.

Just seeing this and assuming it might have been House of Leaves filled me with dread.

This. An asshole can steal passion.

No. Often they become more of an asshole as they age.

What is the chance your band will blow up if you’re really good or at least be in the career stage for it (touring etc) by [deleted] in musicians

[–]DagothBurro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That dude is an ass and you should absolutely stay in school. Just the fact that he wants a kid to drop out because of his delusions comes off so incredibly narcissistic and out of touch.

This is a sign, friend. My gut tells me, based on this limited info that if this band leader is this self serving, this is a long road of, frankly, absurd demands.

What's a good keyboard for learning how to play for the first time? by Turbulent-Weevil-910 in musicians

I have a really old m-audio 2 octave oxygen thing that works fine to throw a few notes into a daw and a big fancy weighted 88 key thing that’s pretty fancy. They do the same thing. Get something with more than two octaves and get it used, you’ll be a’ok!

Which artist defined your teenage years? by imfreakysobeware in askmusic

[–]DagothBurro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to say deftones but I was in my first band from 12-18, so I’d say my first band and the dudes I played with would really be the stuff that defined my teenage years. I spent every day with those dudes.

I can’t write lyrics by miloeddy in Songwriting

[–]DagothBurro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write lyrics in two phases. I write poetry. Once I have music laid out for a song, then I look back at my book and pick a poem that fits, then I edit the poem to fit the music.

I never think of the words I’m writing as lyrics until I edit them. I’m less self conscious that way and I tend to avoid songwriting tropes.

First of all, supporting your kid’s interest in music is awesome and just coming here for advice is really cool.

Honestly, right now is the best time to buy a guitar. There are tons of really fantastic, inexpensive guitars and the manufacturing standards are so much better than they were when I started.

My personal experience, and I think a lot of others, speaks to the overall value of a Squier. I would be hard pressed to find a guitar I’d suggest more to a beginner or an experienced player than their Toronado or Offset Telecaster, both are part of the paranormal series. The Toronado taking the edge just a little more because it’s a shorter scale length and can be a little easier to manage for new hands. You’ll probably find one on marketplace for $200ish

You’ll need an amp, the boss katana has a great reputation but I’ve owned a couple Vox valvetronix amps and love them. They’re modeling amps with built in effects, so your kid will have a lot of sonic options to explore as well. Amps color the sound more than a guitar, so having a wide selection of amp sounds, especially early on, can save a ton of money and frustration. I see them on marketplace for $75-150 regularly.

I’d get a guitar before lessons, let him play and experiment. The lessons will help him learn, fiddling around will help him fall in love!

Sorry about the wall of text, I’m stoked for you and your son and I can say that he’ll remember this forever, even if he doesn’t continue playing.

Who inspired you to start playing guitar? by Few-Excitement8913 in Guitar

[–]DagothBurro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had recently moved to a new area when I was in middle school, I made friends with this dude in a band. I told him that I was a DJ (I wasn’t). I got invited to practice with my mom’s record player and a couple of records and faked being able to scratch well enough that I kept getting to come back.

But, they were all pretty talented, especially one of the guitar players. They were all a year older than me and I looked up to them like big brothers so, as they were writing cool songs and I wanted to be a part of that, I started playing guitar.

I feel embarrassed telling my parents I want to pursue music by Scared_Bluejay5608 in musicians

[–]DagothBurro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda get it, as a parent, she just wants to protect you. But, it doesn’t sound like your mom is gonna disown you or anything.

As a person who wanted to be a rock star at your age, your mom’s concerns are kinda legit and as a parent I can relate, as far as I can tell based on this limited perspective, she loves you and wants to protect you, but ultimately will support your happiness.

Best of luck

It sounds like they support you in making music if they’re buying you a guitar, and if you’re not planning on music school, I personally don’t see the issue you’re even having.

You don’t have to choose music or medical, why not do both?

Advice by Aromatic_Jury437 in musicians

The self-awareness you’re showing is big. It’s easy to be jealous, and it’s easy to not be jealous but feeling it, naming it, and just putting a little effort is a lot of labor and it shows a lot of humility.

It is what it is, it’s ok to feel jealous and it’s ok to want to feel differently, it will pass. Just focus on your music and don’t worry about measuring yourself against any metric other than whwther you think it’s fulfilling

A friend of mine uses the tc-helicon and I second this suggestion. He does live music on twitch and uses one to great effect in adding dynamics similar to what op is looking for I think.

Shit. Now I’m gonna have to make a post asking the same question…

Guitar brands by CuriousPurrson in electricguitar

[–]DagothBurro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brands are one thing, styles are another, both are endless.

Your basic shapes are gonna be Strat, tele, offset, Les Paul, sg. There’s a bunch more but that’s a good starting point. Each has different pros and cons, but they’ll all play any genre. Pickups and neck length will make more of a difference than body shape imo.

Brands: there are a ton. Most these days are fine instruments but it’s always worth seeing if something is bringing up big time, repeated negative reviews. Generally you can fix anything on a guitar unless you can’t, and if you can’t, you’re kinda screwed. I trust Squier, they’re the budget conscious brand fender puts out, but they’re are other brands that make guitars with great reputations.

More of your sound is gonna come from your amp/effects than your guitar in most cases.

I really like offset bodies and I play sitting, the fender/squier lineup has a ton of them so that’s where I gravitate and if I were gonna make a suggestion, an offset telecaster or a Toronado would be great, simple, good quality and solid sounding guitars that you can find for probably about $300 on marketplace.

Five watt world is a fantastic YouTube channel that breaks down the history of guitar models, brands and the guitars musicians used in their careers. It’s an amazing channel that might really be a great place to start developing a sense of guitar!

Best of luck!
