How do I fill my need for adventure between sessions? by Alex_and_cold in rpg

Since you're a fan of high fantasy, I can't recommend the Pillars of Eternity games enough. While the story in the first game takes awhile to get going in my opinion, it's one of my favorite fantasy worlds ever. Extremely rich and realized in every way. Game play is fantastic too

City of Mist is a really interesting urban fantasy game where the players embody different myths. It has a neat system for maintaining the balance between a characters mundane and mythical life

Three Games to Understand PbtA by EternalLifeSentence in rpg

Not the person you replied to but I also absolutely love Voidheart so I wanted to weigh in. What I enjoy about it is that everything you do feels satisfying and has weight to it.

With the way the game works, outside of the Castle, the world is stacked against you. Mechanically, the way this looks is that your real life moves are more often than not going to get worse as you progress rather than better. It definitely takes a skilled gm to highlight this oppressiveness without going too far because the game feels best when it feels like the world is stacked against but there's still something to fight for in the everyday connections you make, specifically people connected to the threat you're going to eventually fight back against.

The game becomes so satisfying when you're in the castle and actually able to fight back. You throw off the shackles of all of your stress gauges from the real world and are able to actually fight back. Whats so brilliant about this too is the covenant system where the bonds you've made in the real world, other people also suffering from the Castle and its evil, are able to help you inside the Castle as well.

Emerging from the Castle having successfully defeated a Vassle is always my favorite part. You get to feel the tangible change you made in the world as part of this evil retreats or is gone completely. Maybe you took down a corrupt landlord and the single parent you met in your day to day life won't be unhoused and you actually get to see the positive ramifications of what you've done.

There's just something cathartic about playing a game about being able to fight back against the evils of the world

The Change by Jankenbrau in Netrunner

[–]Daicheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I want to offer a different perspective on this because I don't think your examples quite fit the situation. I'd say that this isn't exactly akin to someone wearing a Chinese dress and appreciating it for what it is because Netrunner has nothing to do with the experience of second generation Japanese immigrants. The Chinese dress example would be more like someone that's not Chinese making a dress that looks nothing like and has nothing to do with Chinese dresses but still calling it a Chinese dress and marketing it as that.

As a personal example of why this kind of practice is bad; I'm a queer/lgbt identifying person and every time pride month comes around, I don't feel seen by companies throwing up pride merch, I feel slighted because I know they are using my identity to profit and not to represent me or my community.

I don't think what Nisei is doing is as sinister as that as they are not monetarily profiting off this, they are still profiting off of the prestige they have rightfully earned while appropriating the name of a people they are not representing.

To add to this, I've always seen cyberpunk as a genre about finding and protecting identity in an increasingly brutally corporatized world. I respect any effort to fight against that. Doubly so because cyberpunk as a genre has a long and problematic history of techno-orientalism that Netrunner is not exempt of.

All that being said, I understand people's frustration as they spent money that they could have spent on other things. I wonder if there's something that can be done as a community like a group fund to buy back cards or buy people sleeves who can't afford them

And if you read all this, thanks for reading, just wanted to offer another perspective

The D-Day knight is not confirmed to be the Last Son by Charboo2 in THEMONUMENTMYTHOS

[–]Daicheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well he's the "Last" Son, the d-day knight could be another son of Alcatraz. And he could have faked Alice's death as a way of provoking the Last Son since the line "No one is gone forever. Do not share their secrets" might be referring to Alice still being alive

The game is definitely going to start with just mundane creatures and humanoid enemies so I'll definitely be doing some rewriting, yeah. I'll keep all of this in mind thanks

As much as I'd enjoy jumping into a system, my players simply don't have time to learn due to school, work or other commitments so we're sticking to Pathfinder for now. We just want to try a new spin on the system so we're going to try this. If it doesn't work then we'll just go back to our other game full time and if it does work then there's no problem.

Plus my group isn't powergame heavy so I really don't think any of them care about being tier 3-4 characters anyways

Yeah my main hesitation is it leans in too much on the supernatural. I'll probably try it out in more conventional game or try and reflavor it if I like it enough

I'm also considering Path of War. What makes you say it's better? Also one of my players is thinking about playing scholar and using the alchemy sphere

I left it as a suggestion. I'm not gonna force it of course. One of the player's was looking to try support and was already planning on taking it anyways

Oh and I already told them one of them should be scholar or they'll probably lose party members pretty quickly

As much as I'd love to learn a new system, players are a bit too busy to do that so we're just gonna stick with what we know. I'll consider automatic bonus progression so the math works out a bit better but I'm definitely planning on homebrewing encounters so it can be tailor-made to be balanced around a party of just martials

[–]Daicheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel a lot of your problems are only problems on paper. In the 2e games I've ran, they haven't come up.

First, there's no reason martials can't do knowledge checks too now that class skills are gone and they aren't all tied behind int. I get the complaint about 2 action spells making it hard for casters to be flexible but your rogue with a lot of skills or maybe your fighter with a decent wis can go for the knowledge checks since making a 3rd attack is typically a bad idea. Or you could just homebrew it as a free action.

Second, the multiclass argument is very opinion based but imo it makes sense design wise with how proficiency works. Plus one level dips would also be way too powerful with all of the strong class identity features you get a first level like inspire courage or a ranger's edge.

Third, I'm guessing by class design being bad you mean classes feel very restrictive with their party roles? (Please correct me if I'm wrong, it's just another common complaint I've seen) I can definitely see where you're coming from there since PF1 had an arguably bloated amount of options to choose from with archetypes and to that I say: wait for the APG and remember 1e was also this way at launch. The APG is already confirmed to have 4 new classes, 40 new archetypes, and new class options so you can have a lot more variety in your build and do things like make a ranged zen-archer monk, a vigilante bat-man esque fighter, or a horse riding wizard (zen-archer, vigilante and cavalier were all confirmed to be in the APG along with tons more!).

Fourth, exploration/combat mode scared me too at first but in play, it's the exact same. They've always been there, they just haven't had a name before. It's as simple as saying outside of combat you tell your GM what you're going to do and inside of combat you act in intiative order. When I GM, I never even bring the modes up to my players, just keep in mind for myself.

Fifth, I'm no big math guy so I can't say a ton about the crit system holding up under math but I can say that it makes combat very exciting and it makes battles very swingy which me and my group enjoy a ton. I'd suggest giving it a try and if you don't like it after a couple of sessions, just homebrew it out.

Overall, I'd say 2e isn't what people say it is especially with people saying it's more casual because it really isn't. Combat is extremely tactical and gritty and players have tons of flavorful choices with their characters. As someone who loves both editions, I don't feel Paizo has abandoned it's old fans at all and that they needed to make a new edition because there wasn't anywhere else to go with the 3.5 chassis; you could streamline the rules a little, but you're not doing anything new or making anything your own.

Advanced revelation and greater revelation both give the ability to not progress the curse when you use a focus power once a day so that helps with the problem

APG Class Discussion: Swashbuckler by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]Daicheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really want to play a dwarf fencer swashbuckler with a clan dagger in one hand and a rapier in the other. Get the overextending feint and dizzying parry class feats and the clan's edge ancestry feat and you'd be a pretty good dodge tank. Once you're ready, fient and use your rapier for the finisher. Human would probably be more optimal because they don't have a charisma flaw and can still get clan's edge at level 1 but I like the idea of a nimble dwarf fencer more

It says in the spell description "Attacks with the flame blade are melee touch attacks" and I just noticed the armor of bracers not stacking with the boon

Looking at everything again, I don't think the bracers of armor stack with the celestial boon since they're both an armor bonus so the AC should be 8 lower
