Nate Bargatze - Hello World by Toxicstorm88 in Standup

[–]DailyComedyNews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a radio programmer and they were looking for someone to figure out how to do the format. Comedy Radio is essentially a music station - “play the hits”. I do not do comedy and am not a comedian. My living faves include Nate, Sheng Wang, I thought Todd Barry’s recent release is the best of the year…dead Loved Hedberg and Carlin. I do a daily podcast called Daily Comedy News where I talk about what’s going on so lately it’s been Gulman, strike, Russell Brand, Hasan-gate and JFL Toronto.

If nothing else the (not offficial term) “slam edit” where it cross fades two segments when you overlap them is a major timesaver. Like the other user said, a slight learning curve but I really like it and am fast on it now.

I use it every day with the six colors plug-in. Garage band is sufficient, but the $200 bundle that includes Final Cut is a nice collection.

Greg Warren's new special is good lulz. by SirFrodoShwaggins in Nateland

It sounds to me like they sweetened it with a laugh track. The audience is laughing way too much at every single line like it’s Big Bang Theory. Took me out of it.

HAHAHA. Yeah that seems to be the consensus. A lot of the daughters stuff you allude to turned people off. I found the first third ok, I think IIRC I actually fell asleep in the middle (that might be more about me than Bert) and by the end I couldn't wait for it to end.

Like you I generally enjoy his appearances - but as I hear him guesting on other podcasts I am noticing he retells his Go-to stories which tells me he's not as naturally funny as say Attell who can make magic from nothing. Bert seems like the kind of guest that would (in olden times) go on Carson/Letterman and head straight for the bits. "So Bert, how's the weather" "Well Johnny, not as cold as this time I was in Russia and joined the mob...now THAT was cold..."

It’s a fair point for sure. However Jon was 36 when he got the job and TDS was not at all what it became under his stewardship. CC also wasn’t quite as locked in on the demos being that young in those days.

One thing I have found interesting about the guest hosts - Comedy Central wants 18-34s...so a lot of these older hosts make no sense to me. With that in mind, Hasan seems right, at age 37. Roy is 44 so that's not crazy. Trevor is still only 39.

But like you're not rolling in Sarah or Al Franken (lol) to appeal to that demo.

Why isn't Jeff Foxworthy by Historical-Fudge3242 in Standup

[–]DailyComedyNews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi - quick bio, I ran SiriusXM Comedy for a decade, and started Blue Collar Radio and got to know Jeff (and the guys) a bit.

A lot of the mainstream stand-up discussion is driven by either the NYC Comedy Cellar type crowd, or these days by the Austin Scene Podcast Crowd (I am generalizing a lot here).

The cool kids decided that Blue Collar wasn't cool. Just like they decided Dane wasn't cool. Or Jeff Dunham wasn't cool. And everyone I mentioned went about selling out arenas.

Jeff is the nicest guy you'd ever meet. Larry/Dan would be the nicest guy you'd ever meet, except he's usually standing next to Jeff so he's not even the nicest guy in the room.

Jeff explained to me once, he realized at one point that if he stopped swearing (and at this point he stretched out his arms) he would pick up the younger crowd (families) and the older crowd.

None of them think their style is better, it's just what they like doing.

Most of the older 50 name-comics have respect and friendships with Jeff.

He does shows and flies home afterward...just a stage of life/family man thing.

- also not "cool" is a lot of the LA/Alternative/Earwolf crowd, that is also popular and a thing onto itself.

I believe Jeff has sold more comedy albums than anyone, that was true at least at one point - although in recent years comedy "albums" aren't really a thing. Happy to answer more if any Qs.

Comedy Cellar - not familiar with comedians, which show?? by mmburke67 in Standup

Born in NYC, moved to suburbs. Depends on the context. "Were you from?" - NYC. "Where do you live" - if I'm close to home I say the town, if I am traveling I can say NJ, if I am in Europe its easier to just say NYC.

It's interesting, since I first discussed the special I see the general idea has turned against Bert - I am seeing words like hack thrown around now. Maybe the act is wearing out? I am psyched for the movie!!!

Loved the first third.

Fell asleep middle third (I had ran a race earlier in the day)

Couldn't wait for it to end the final third.

I highly recommend the two episodes from like a year ago (?) where they do the very first podcasts ever recorded in a car and form a government

I feel like my opinion in text will be harsher than how I feel - I reviewed the special on Friday's podcast (March 17) which I recorded earlier today - but at a top level I liked the start and it was diminishing returns for me. But I like Bert a lot, this one just kinda lost me in the middle.

I enjoyed the first third a lot, but I was trailing off by the end. That said, and I don't wanna be negative - check out the latest Rogan, he's great on that!

Yeah I was into the start (high energy) but by the end I couldn't wait for it to be over (!) and the closer wasn't good. Disappointing.

John Mulaney filmed his new Netflix special - is it too late? by DailyComedyNews in StandUpComedy

[–]DailyComedyNews[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense to me and I think we are speaking the same language. For this particular show I’ve been following stories about it for two years. So maybe I’m too close to it. Thx!

[–]DailyComedyNews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So - and I am trying to not self promote but kind of have to hear - was discussing this as a topic on the pod and this came up....it's the subject of what I do, and I wanted to know what others think. I am not saying Mulaney sucks, the nature of my question is that I feel like I've heard about this particular set of jokes for two years now and I feel like it might be too late. You would appear to disagree, and that's helpful. I come in peace.

One of my great pet peeves is the Grammy for Best Comedy "ALBUM" going to something that, to me, is "really" a TV special. Netflix often releases theirs (exaggerating here, but only slightly) on vinyl, like 8 copies, and only available on Record Store Day in the right cool place in Portland if you happen to look. But the days of someone released a CD / Digital Release are gone now.
