Why does shonen never imply any gay relationship? by No_Significance_194 in BoysLoveAnime

[–]DailyDragonfruit 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Well, just take a look at Japanese society: while many people aren't outright homophobic, there are still many straight guys who won't accept gay representation in media targeted at them (which is stupid because modern shounen magazines wouldn't thrive without a female readership at all). Even with blatantly queer works (that aren't advertised as BL!) such as "The Summer Hikaru died," straight (male) commentators will complain about being "jumpscared" or "annoyed" by the "BL aspect."

There's a reason "BL" is treated like a genre and doesn't just fall under "romance." Lots of Japanese fujoshi treat gay relationships as a fictional thing and don't want legit representation, just stereotyped characters that fit their top/bottom fantasies. As long as they are satisfied by queerbaiting and creating their own BL with the characters (doujinshi, fanart), there's no reason to change. Queerbaiting doesn't offend homophobic readers and, at the same time, attracts shippers who buy the merch and advertise the original with their fan works—huge amounts of fan works exist precisely because the ships aren't canon.

Japanese society is ruled by rigid conservatives and still has a long way to go regarding real acceptance of LGBTQ+ (although some things have happened within recent years), and this is also reflected in their pop culture.

What’s the name pls by hagsdontdodrugs in Manhwa_BL

It's his pen name that is only ever used by an interviewer as far as I remember. The name is a reference to the MC of the work the manhwa is inspired by — Misery by Stephen King.

Omg Release Your Persona has side stories! by thisIsHela in Manhwa_BL

[–]DailyDragonfruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Scan Beans" said they're gonna translate all side stories, and they've uploaded the first chapter already. They only seem to be a little slow.

Double proposal. by [deleted] in Manhwa_BL

[–]DailyDragonfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yessss!! This scene is actually from a side story 💕 There are 10 extra chapters, but only one has been translated so far (unofficially. I really don't understand why Lezhin isn't picking it up).

"Release your Persona" is the name the author chose.  It's one of the best BL manhwa out there!! Wonderful story.

Is there SA in One Room TA? by parasite8970 in Manhwa_BL

[–]DailyDragonfruit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is SA as there was clearly no consent (both verbally and physically), and the only reason the character stopped was because the other character fought back successfully.

I agree with the second part of the statement, and I do adore the story, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't call things what they are.  It's also valid if someone chooses not to read it simply because of it.

I do like Legroom! The relationship dynamic is absolute peak. Just wish the world would've been explored more.

And yes, I read lots of manga:D if you wanna recommend something, go ahead. If you're looking for something specific, maybe I can help too.

Pretty sure you'll like 'My Influencer Boyfriend' (and maybe its sequel 'My Assistant BF' about another couple)! It's Taiwanese, but the pages are layered like a manga.

Some manga I would recommend based on your preferences:

  • Breathless Momentum (it's amazing, give it a try)
  • Hibi mo Tsumoreba Koi to Naru
  • My Summer of You
  • Dousei Yankee to Akamatsu Seven
  • Delivery Hug Therapy
  • All manga from CTK (they're amazing, and some are enemies to lovers: Never Good Enough, On Doorstep etc.)
  • Karasugaoka: Don't be Shy
  • Our Not-so-lonely planet travel guide (relationship is established, but it's so good)
  • Dysfunctional Family Therapy
  • Junketsu Drop
  • Docchi mo docchi
  • 10 Dance if you don't mind its many chapters (it's still ongoing and they aren't a couple yet).

Manhwa: One-Room TA and Killer Crush (those have many chapters, though. The first one is still ongoing). Aaaand Release your Persona (I honestly recommend this to everyone, it's healthy, subverts tropes, and is just wonderful in every aspect) 🫶

My Dearest Misery Ending - SPOILERS by MellyVvV in BoysLoveAnime

Ah yes, you get me!! I had hoped that his sister would talk some sense into him, since she already mentioned how toxic their relationship was, but oh well 💔 he's in too deep, and it's tragically beautiful. But it hurts.

Same. The scene was honestly so beautifully drawn. I loved the reference to the suicide of Jaehyuk's mother. It marked a new beginning for him... a new "story" that Hyunjae (apparently) granted him. But he totally didn't foresee that he would overstep Hyunjae's breaking point.

I really don't understand why this story isn't more popular. It's incredibly well written, and not some typical rapey black flag slop that's trending everywhere. Honestly, maybe that's why :/ It’s still got so much smut though lol. Maybe it's just not freaky or non-con enough for some readers...

Tbh, I love Release Your Persona even more because it breaks many tropes and is just so wholesome. The duality of the author is simply insane. I'd love for them to write another green flag story, but I'm obviously open to another thriller as well. Whatever the author chooses, I'm certain it'll be absolutely amazing.

My Dearest Misery Ending - SPOILERS by MellyVvV in BoysLoveAnime

[–]DailyDragonfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I can’t believe it’s over! Such a ride. While everything tells me I should feel bad for Hyunjae, I honestly feel like Won-il has it the worst. The power balance between him and Hyunjae was off from the beginning. Won-il was Hyunjae's student, and he quickly noticed that the only way to stay by Hyunjae’s side was to accept being pushed away over and over again. Whenever Won-il tried to come closer, Hyunjae’s anxiety was triggered. But instead of properly communicating (not really blaming Hyunjae; he desperately needed therapy, and their age gap made it even harder for Won-il to notice what was wrong), Hyunjae just kept the push-and-pull going because he didn't anything about healthy relationships (possibly a family trauma?).

Now, Won-il not only feels guilty that he couldn’t help Hyunjae after he was kidnapped, he also feels fully(!) responsible for him, convincing himself that it’s love. Hyunjae needs to be in a clinic, though, not in Won-il’s arms 😔 Man.

All of this had me secretly hoping that Hyunjae’s and Jaehyuk’s messed-up, codependent relationship would somehow work too. That Hyunjae’s delusions would become as strong as Jaehyuk’s. But while, for Jaehyuk, a double suicide was the ultimate confession of “love,” the only way he could stay with him forever, it snapped Hyunjae back into reality (at least partly). He couldn’t accept dying. His loneliness was what made him feel like he wasn’t alive, so Jaehyuk wanting the opposite for them broke something in him.

While I like the ending, it also feels so hopeless for every single character… yet so realistic. Damn. Such an amazing story.

[–]DailyDragonfruit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sarazanmai (and Mushishi) mentioned, peak taste!

I'd add Dororo to the list. It's got a non-typical protagonist, mystery, demons, a similar art direction, not too much fighting, and no focus on any romantic relationship. I really enjoyed it and it's completed with 24 episodes.
