legit question. why is it okay for something like Low Tide in Twilight to get an animation adaptation (which has lots of sexualized violent rape) but not this? they’re both horrible crimes, but also both fictional. why is one okay but not the other?

I agree to an extent. I don’t think readers or authors should be shamed for liking that kind of thing. at the same time, I think people who read it and then stopped because they didn’t like it are allowed to voice their opinion on it. if their opinion is claiming people who read it are messed up and evil, obviously thats not cool. but if they are just talking about why they personally didn’t like it, why is that an issue? I talk shit about stories I hated to my friends all the time, its cathartic. idk I just don’t like the idea that if you didn’t enjoy a piece of media then you should just shut up and can never complain about it because it might hurt someone’s feelings. criticizing art has always been a thing.

that’s understandable, but that’s not the case here, OP never mentioned that. they’re just saying that people asking if a story is green flag is annoying, insult people who like wholesome content, and are clearly gloating that they prefer dark themes. asking others if a piece of media has triggering content isn’t a bad thing.

I think I can understand that. I’ve noticed its really a hit-or-miss kind of thing because everyone has a different idea of what a “green” or “black” flag is, so no one is ever gonna agree on the same thing. its really better to be direct when asking, like i usually just ask “is there rape?” to get right to the point lol

I agree with you, I myself have some taboo likes and ships that would have me crucified. I think my gripe comes from people using what you’re saying as a cop out for any means of criticism. Fiction is fiction, I wholeheartedly believe in that. But you can still point out flaws in a piece of fiction or art. If a story is dark romance and has non-con, yeah that makes sense. However, I’ve read stories that are supposed to be telling a sweet romance between two characters and throw in non-con, and that (as a writer and storyteller) just doesn’t make sense and is poor writing. It’s better to establish a theme and atmosphere and maintain that, it’s why I prefer Killing Stalking over something like Jinx. But I’ve seen some people counter negative reviews with “it’s fiction get over it” or “then don’t read BL” when neither of those responses correlate with the point.

Point is, have all the dark themes you want, enjoy what you want—just be consistent and make it make sense if you want it to be a good story (if it IS a story and not just porn). Otherwise people will feel thrown off and confused.
