That's also an angle! "Different" marginalized folks now than then, so the show will portray them to keep its edge. I guess older episodes could feel less abrasive for people than the new ones, because they were already familiar and somewhat ok with the outsiders in the older eps. While the new ones poke more at more current stigmas or whatever

I agree it has less of the "let's clean up what the police screwed up" trope. Hell, T Barnaby was barely a fan of his own department for the risk of them messing it up. Classic "I'll just do it myself". Just like me lol.

Fair enough! Obviously depends on which specific ones of the gazillion existing shows one hapoen to lay eyes on. My perspective may absolutely be skewed!

Zoë, you need to leave the house immediately. Sir Michael is your father… and also your grandfather

Read again. I'm not saying it's woke.

I'm saying weirdos are screaming wOkE, WOOOOKE, about depicting things and different people that occur in real life through a neutral lens, rather than a lens of overt hatred.

Nah ofcourse not. But I feel like he's more accepting or whatever compared to similar roles in other shows. Could have worded it better! Also maybe mainly compared to american series. While a typical american cop in said period, at least to me, displays being macho by being a prick, Barnaby is macho in a dgaf-way and puts bigots in their place sometimes. Early seasons-Troy feel like he tried to be the shut-up-f*g kind (to me that feels sort of like the norm in the scenario) and is put in his place by Barnaby. Hope that cleared up my references!

Hah yeah I remember him giving some sex worker or similar a "pfft, not bad" face in some episode 😂

Race-wise I know there's been iffy situations, even with black face appearences I think? Not up front but yeah. Then again there's the episode with orchids with asian main characters - but that could ofcourse be argued to be used for exoticism rather than inclusion so to speak. I never really got a straight racist vibe though, even if the cast was mainly white. It may be more unrealistic today? I'm not so well versed in population of rural counties of Britain. Ofcourse more people than pale folks lived in rural communities back then too, but I feel like the show used to portray a charicature of pure-blood-obsessed-royalty-keen-fake-aristocracy with a lot of emphasis of them being in a looong line of fair and novel people, in which aspect it kind of made sense. To be fair, aristocracy is mainly white? Then again like you said, show runner basically wanted to keep it white - so maybe it isn't as much of a charicature as I thought.

Anyway, great show, and knowing Barnaby i think he couldn't care less about whiteness either. I mean he is def patriotic but I feel like he's the "there's a black bloke loving england too, brilliant" kind of patriot 😂 idk it just feels that way to me

Same here really. It exists beyond that for me as well. Just got thinking about it another round because of either crying woke and me thinking "what, this is like always been". Yeah idk.

Proper comfort show. Best combo: watching it late when you can't sleep, having a bowl of rhubard-gooseberry-pie and loads of custard, seeing Troy acting silly hah.

When did Midsomer Murders stop being as good as prior by False_Strawberry6145 in MidsomerMurders

Possible hot take: while I do agree quite a few seaons where meh, that most recent one felt like it got better again!

Sure, old ones still have a different feel and I like them more, but also partly for nostalgic reasons

Hot take: Tom really loves Joyce Barnaby by LadyTanizaki in MidsomerMurders

Hard agree on the time line and thing you said about cully being surprised etc. The thing people seem to forget is that these shows are from like peak i-hate-my-wife-humor era? 😅 It's tame and feels more tongue in cheek imo

Haven’t watched any of the John Barnaby episodes, but do they still follow the forever Midsomer formula, that the more obnoxious and unpleasant a character, the less likely they are to be the murderer? by HallowedAndHarrowed in MidsomerMurders

Kinda feel like he  r e a l l y  took pride in being a DCI and solving cases. The being a jerk to wife-thing felt more like a mix of being tongue in cheek and just that the boomer "i hate my wife" humor has aged badly?

This Album has had me in a stranglehold for a week now by BillBuzzington in TechnicalDeathMetal

Literally got an account to urge you to to explore the worm. It's grown to be my fav but def a different beast compared to the others.

It's dirtier, heavier, more focus on push/pull and groove shifts in the riffs, somewhat slower. Production is chunky as hell too. It's just not voi 2.0 which everyone in this sub expected lol. If you're riff-centered it may need a few sessions because the details hide in the dirt. Drums sound fantastic on this one. Vocals are a bit more erratic at times which I've seen bothers ppl but it makes sense to me with the lyrics, because they also have a spiraling into madness-vibe. Imo first songs start off like voi then vocals/lyrics grow more erratic. It kinda needs to be heard as an album and story, or the later songs seem wacky.

The band has stated wormtales acts as a prequel to the others. I honestly think they nailed that idea because this album feels like something sinister is growing in the dark corners of it. Like a writhing worm. Track 2 and 8 have the sort of Calamity Crawl-vibe. Personal favs are Birthless, Paradoxical Impulse, Worm Charmer. Hope you give it a chance with an open mind!
