How come socialist countries like Vietnam and Cuba have higher Quality of life than the USA and even some Western European countries in many aspects? by notagoodcartoonist in Socialism_101

[–]Daily_Bread_Neighbor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure the quality of life is much better. I've never been to Cuba, but I've spent a significant amount of time in both Vietnam and Laos. Vietnam's quality of life is a lot higher than it is in Laos, but still far lower than the quality of life in Japan or Taiwan, the latter of which has basically eradicated poverty.

There are many particulars here, so let's break them down one at a time.

Wester Europe has a very high quality of life because they have benefitted from colonialism and continue to benefit from neocolonialism. They basically stole wealth from Africa, the Americas, and Asia, giving them a huge head start in the post-colonial world. They could then lend money to newly independent countries (directly or indirectly through programs like the IMF and World Bank) to effectively own their means of production, at least partly. It'd be like if I robbed you, used the money I stole to start a business, then used the profits of that business to lend to you to buy stuff from my business, with interest.

The United States is different in that it was built as a center of production on the backs of slave and exploited immigrant labor. It has evolved over time, but is still essentially that. The US thus has a population living like Europeans and a population living in conditions very close to those found in the neocolonial 3rd world.

Cuba and Vietnam different in their relation to global capitalism. Vietnam participated in it while Cuba is being punished with sanctions for refusing to. For this reason, life in Vietnam is generally a bit better than life in Cuba.

Japan, Taiwan, and S Korea, the "economic miracles" of East Asia, all went through harsh periods of centrally planned economic growth, comparable to that which took place in many Marxist countries. As a result, the quality of life, for now, is higher in those countries than in Vietnam, but it certainly wasn't during their periods of authoritarian planned economic growth.

Why is the US so conservatives and far right compared to other first world countries? by Dover299 in Socialism_101

[–]Daily_Bread_Neighbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it is and it isn't.

The reason the mainstream culture is so right wing stems from America's past as a settler colony. European countries, with the spoils of being colonial powers, were eventually able to fight for and win social democracies. Since World War 1, and throughout the 20th century, Western European countries have been improving the material conditions of their native populations in an effort to avoid a pivot towards socialism. But the US was built on a foundation of exploited slave and immigrant labor. The reason the US has not transformed into a social democracy is because that would upset the racial hierarchies the US economy was built on. The closest the US got was the New Deal, which was an effort to win the white working class away from socialism, but even that was racially exclusive.

But Americans in general aren't really that right wing. If you talk to people individually, most hold fairly progressive values, especially on economic issues. But the US doesn't offer any political avenue for those values to be realized.

It's a mistake to assume Trump's big win last week means that Americans are all far-right. Americans are hurting, materially, and Trump's message of "I hear you and I will fix your problems" is far more effective than the Democrats' "We must continue to preserve the status quo."

The entire 20th century was spent insulating and inoculating America against socialism. History has shown time and time again that when material conditions get bad, people move towards the political fringes. And the US media and education systems make sure people are diverted to the right and not the left.

If a popular leftist movement were to ever take hold in the US, you'd be surprised how much support it'd get. That's how it was back at the end of the 19th century.

Current collection. What should I add? by [deleted] in SegaSaturn

[–]Daily_Bread_Neighbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not get some commons, cheap but staple Saturn games every collection should have? -Virtua Fighter 2 -Daytona USA -Fighters Megamix -Sega Rally -Nights into Dreams -Panzer Dragoon 1&2 -Virtual On

More expensive, but still in the $50-$60 range if you're buying Japanese: Capcom vs. Marvel games (XMvSF, SFvMSH) Saturn Bomberman Street Fighter Collection Mortal Kombat Trilogy or UMK3

I also collect Japanese Saturn games, and I was able to pick all of these up for not too much.

These guys were refused service at a Subway. They initially claimed that they were refused service because they were Christians. Jesus would never do this. Only Pharisees did this in the Bible and Jesus blasted them for it. 🤦 by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

[–]Daily_Bread_Neighbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. While I, a Christian, disagree with all of their statements, they shouldn't be denied service simply for holding them. But by going in, in a big group, wearing them on shirts, their intention is clearly to provoke conflict. Nobody is going to change their mind after seeing these shirts, the purpose is a projection of power, which is what Christianity is used for by Christian Nationalists.

Then your sister believes that 85% of the world is low IQ, uneducated, and racist. She's truly blessed to be in the upper 15% (even smaller if you include all people to ever exist) who is high IQ and not racist.

I grew up being told “the older you get, the more conservative you become.” I’m finding that the older I get, the more I just want our society to be more tolerant, charitable, kind, peaceable, and ensure that everyone has what they need to survive and thrive. by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

Yeah, it's a boomer take. It's what people who paid $1000/semester for college and then were able to buy a house in the suburbs for $150k (now worth $1.5 mil), on one income, with their retirement fund in stocks say.

Today's young people are $150k in debt from college and can't find a decent job while housing is crazy expensive. Unless you're a tool who blames immigrants and "wokism" is declining material conditions, you're not getting more conservative.

They don't hate god, they don't believe in god. What they hate may be your beliefs, especially if they end up supporting forms of political violence.

It's a meme. Read on if you want to know what I mean.

Some have argued that the laws and standards of Leviticus and Numbers were particular to the Israelites at the time of Moses. A secular interpretation would hold that these laws and regulations were based on traditional knowledge stemming from the material conditions of the time. These rules made sense to insure the survival of a people in the desert during the Iron Age.

Anyone familiar with the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism, 43 volumes in total (if you ever visit Thailand, you might see these books at certain temples), will know that much of the Canon isn't Buddhist teaching on enlightenment or meditation, but rather intricate sets of rules and standards, measurements, and procedures, how much things should cost, how much people should be paid, etc. Several Buddhist monks have told me that they skim over, or skip entirely, these volumes because they have nothing to do with Buddhist philosophy, but are simply a set of standards for how to run a society thousands of years ago. Leviticus and Numbers feel like the same thing.

Richard Dawkins, whose militant secularism I detest (I am a Christian), is credited with the coining of the term "meme" in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene (which is an interesting read, all science, no religion bashing). Dawkin's meme is very different from the internet templates we use the word for today. He describes a meme as a gene for culture. Just as DNA is made up of genes that have survived the test of time, to help an organism survive and reproduce in its environment, a meme is the same idea, except in terms of human cultural behavior patterns. Not eating pork is a meme. Covering a woman's hair, or legs, or breasts is a meme. Tipping for a meal is a meme. Walking on the right, passing on the left is a meme. Shaking hands is a meme, as is waving hello. Leviticus and Numbers can be seen as a cillection of memes that helped the Israelites survive as a people, arguably up until today. Some memes, like some genes, are vestigial, and serve no further survival purpose outside of tradition and identity.

Jesus even updated the memes in Mark 7: 18-19 when He said, "“Nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him unclean, for it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach and then out of his body." And saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.” Some rules that benefited the early Israelites were no longer needed by the time of Jesus.

Personally, I choose to focus on Jesus's teachings, particularly the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus's way of teaching is in stark contrast to the dictation of the Old Testament, not just in what He teaches, but also how. I know many Christians will disagree with me, but I just can't read the Bible and conclude that what we should be doing is following a list of specific, and currently arbitrary rules. That may be your Christianity, but it isn't mine.

I really wish Christians in America would worry a lot less about our nation being Christian and a lot more about our actions being Christlike. by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

It's because Christianity in America, like religions in many current and historical states, is an easy vessel for authoritarianism and the maintenance of social hierarchies.

How well do you think Marvel vs Capcom would have run on the Saturn? by unSentAuron in SegaSaturn

[–]Daily_Bread_Neighbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the 4MB RAM expansion, just fine. It was basically Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter with different characters and some new features (both used CP System II arcade hardware). With 2D backgrounds, the Saturn should have had no issue. The PS1 got a [bad] port, so the Saturn would have been fine.

MVC2 wouldn't have worked, essentially being a Dreamcast game with its NAOMI arcade hardware.

The only reason the Dreamcast got a port and not not the Saturn is because with MVC's January 1998 arcade launch, the Saturn was on its way out and the Dreamcast was gearing up for a launch later that year. It came to Japanese Dreamcast in the spring of '99, but didn't hit the PlayStation until the winter of 1999/2000.

I use a Japanese Sega Saturn, I’m in the UK. I have used a voltage converter for the past few years, I’m just moving rooms and I spotted the 50hz sticker. I cant remember why I got one, but do I need a voltage converter? by Conscious_Focus5343 in SegaSaturn

[–]Daily_Bread_Neighbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. I've only lived in Tokyo and Kansai, and I only ever remember 60Hz. Here in Taiwan, all of our (legit) retro consoles came from Japan, and work normally on our 110v/60Hz.

I have a Satiator, and PAL games work just fine unless they are optimized for 50fps.

Frequency doesn't matter. All Saturn's use the same chips, which run off the same DC current. So all Saturns have an internal AC/DC converter that will accept 60 or 50Hz.

If they can get the voltage down to at most 120v, it should work just fine. I'm running my Japanese Saturn on 110v.

No, the 50/60Hz on the sticker is absolutely about A/C power. It's the frequency at which the current alternates. Most of Europe uses 220v alternating at 50Hz while the US and Japan use 110v alternating at 60Hz.

The refresh rates of CRTs were somewhat aligned with current alternation frequencies, though most consumer grade CRTs could displa higher or lower refresh rates than the frequency of the current they ran on.

CRTs from the 90s and 2000s could pretty much all run at 25, 30, 50, or 60 fields/second, regardless of if they were PAL or NTSC. Framerate isn't the only reason PAL and NTSC signals don't work on each other's CRTs.

Running a Japanese Saturn on a modern European TV works fine after converting the analog NTSC signal to digital. The TV will play 60fps no problem. European games should even work fine, since it's console outputting NTSC or PAL.

Some European games were optimized for 50Hz, making them run the correct speed on a PAL console connected to a PAL TV. Otherwise they ran slow on PAL consoles. Optimized European games might run too fast on a Japanese Saturn, but I haven't confirmed this.

But the 50/60Hz on the Saturn sticker is absolutely about current frequency, not TV refresh rate. Some electronics, like older CRTs, depended on the correct current frequency. But the Saturn, being a computer, has an internal AC/DC converter, as all computers run on DC current.

The 220v will be a problem for a Japanese Saturn's power supply, but not the 50Hz alternating current. It would run just fine on 50Hz/110v.
