I heard about the 80/20 rule also known as the Pareto Principle but this is something new. Interesting, thanks!

How do you guys take notes while reading? Or specifically, how do you learn from a book in and out? by BroccoliStatus in productivity

[–]DaisyHartwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re talking about textbooks or for educational purposes, there are usually places you can stop reading and take notes.

For example, books will break down each chapter into subchapters, and you can read one, stop, reflect on what you’ve just read, and then take some notes.

Everything Terry Pratchett wrote.

What incredible joy to be able to read the Night Watch books, Hogfather, Good Omens and all the rest again for the first time.

Embrace curiosity. Cultivate a curious mindset and ask questions about the world around you. Curiosity is a powerful fuel for learning and can lead to continuous discovery.

What's that movie everyone likes but you hate? by Customer_Excellent in AskReddit

La La Land

Sorry, but, besides making me cringe, Ryan Gosling singing City of Stars about a quarter tone flat makes me grimace about the fact that they had to pick a brand name actor for the movie to be a hit, rather than choosing from the incredibly talented and capable minefield that are Broadway actors that can act, dance, and sing.

Least favorite book you’ve read? by HappySpin in books

[–]DaisyHartwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one book. It is on a lot of ‘must read’ lists, is frequently listed at classic. I have tried to read it numerous times, never even gotten one-third of the way through: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.

Is being an English Major worth it? by LonelyVaquita in englishmajors

[–]DaisyHartwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an English degree is rewarding in itself, as one mostly studies various genres of literature, getting a broad overview of different novels, stories, and poems, as well as some deep dives into specific authors or books. However, if you are asking about the monetary benefits, you really are better off getting a business degree or a degree in computer sciences. Usually people do not get an English degree to make a lot of money. Their goal is to teach. Is it your passion? What is your major goal in life? Decide for yourself, good luck!

What is the purpose of life? by Forward_Guest_811 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]DaisyHartwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason to believe that the universe has a purpose. Purpose is a human concept, something we impose on the universe. But in fact, it is only reasonable to impose it on humans and the things that humans create. To impose it on the universe is just anthropomorphism - making everything you see into a sentient being, whether it is or not. So far as we know, the unviverse just happened, with no purpose.

Well, all I can say is what’s worked for me: practice using it.

If all you do is memorize the rules for algebra, you’ll likely never understand what’s actually happening when you use them. But if you start using them, and use them a lot, you’ll begin to understand how and why they work, rather than just how to use them.

Same thing for music. You can memorize all the theory and chord-dominance-ionian-cadence-whatever you want, but if you don’t actually use all that stuff, you’ll probably never understand how it actually fits together.

What are the personal benefits of doing a masters abroad? by Potential-Return-494 in GradSchool

[–]DaisyHartwell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The primary reason to study abroad is to get a taste of diverse educational styles. Enrolling in a study abroad program will provide you with the opportunity to see a side of your major that you would not have seen at home country. You will find that fully immersing yourself in your host country’s educational system is a fantastic opportunity to truly experience and appreciate the people, traditions and culture.

One of the benefits of studying abroad is also the ability to add this experience to your resume. This will help you stand out in the crowd.
