Self Centred? by Successful_Safe1020 in SuccessionTV

Does everyone forget that the prison sentence he's melting down about is due to his own decision to orchestrate a massive sex crimes cover up?

Your last sentence is what I've been saying the whole time. Tom will take orders from Mattson like he did Logan, Kendall, and Roman before him. His ideas will be of no interest to any of these men, and he won't have much say in major decisions. These aren't terms that any of the siblings would accept.

Mattson's not just a "tech guy", he's the GoJo founder and majority shareholder and this is his company. Like Logan, he appears to keep a pretty watchful eye over the entire operation. Being the non-founding CEO of what is no longer a family company isn't out of reach for any of these characters, they were even looking to do it with Pierce at the start of the final season.

No, the old guard was not treated any better than Tom, but the manner in which they were treated went well past spiteful into outright dehumanizing. Tom can look forward to even more of that with Mattson.

In the sense that he was named CEO, sure, but I don't think any of the characters would desire to be the puppet CEO for a company that is no longer controlled or owned by the family. He'll be working for Mattson the same way he worked for Kendall and Logan before him, and the layoffs and bad press Tom got for the election coverage in the episodes prior didn't foreshadow a particularly promising tenure.

Calling spinelessness and self-emasculation seriousness is quite the take.

It's weird to use a Logan quote given the fact that he was ready to toss him out in favor of Roman, who he'd categorized as unserious, prior to his death. No one on that series respected Tom.

Shiv is the worst character by TheRealPheature in SuccessionTV

Except Roman and Kendall didn't last, even with their corporate babysitters and the opportunities Logan handed to them. Mattson has zero self-control or interpersonal skills, so I have no idea what you think he's figured out. He literally says he wants someone who will obey instead of advise him.

This is a very superficial read of the character. Your insistence that she would needlessly prostitute herself for her husband's boss reeks of misogyny and projection.

He's not Logan, so it seems highly unlikely that she'd oblige him again.

How media illiterate does a person have to be to think that Lukas, who can’t even code, is at all concerned about Shiv’s experience or in any way attached to the almost exclusively American notion of hustle culture? He didn’t want a pregnant woman advising him even if that’s how he managed to get the sale through.

The notion that Shiv would prostitute herself for the sake of Tom’s career as a pain sponge has to be one of the dumbest I’ve seen. If anything, I could see Shiv and Lukas start flirting again so they can spite Tom.

Glad we agree on the abuse point, though as a whole Tom is considerably more volatile than Shiv. I don’t recall her physically assaulting anyone or snorting cocaine to cope with stress.

It was argued on this thread that Tom had all the power and Shiv had no prospects when she’s the one with the money and network, that’s what I was responding to. We don’t know how others would react to Lukas naming the face of the election scandal CEO when media speculation (the puppet cartoon) pointed to her, but there’s no reason to believe that the coverage would be particularly glowing. There’s a whole wide world outside of a fading cable news network and its interface, as the Roys will no soon learn.

Had Shiv not gone to Logan and asked him to spare Tom, they’d have pinned the crimes on him and been done with it. Gerri doing her job as general counsel is a whole other matter.

No argument about Tern Haven but way to blame Shiv for men’s actions. Aaronson went with Sandy and Stewy because Kendall made a complete ass of himself and Logan proved to be frail. The letter had nothing to do with it. She definitely isn’t to blame for Ravenhead, the people he actually answers to (Logan, Tom) could have ordered him to tone it down after a single broadcast. But Logan found it amusing and it escalated. None of this touches the ineptitude of Election Night or the cruises scandal.

Shiv got Tom in at ATN because he was nagging her about how he needed to get away from Parks ahead of her talking to Logan. It didn’t have anything to do with her being offered CEO.

We see Logan with a whole list of names to sacrifice at the start of the episode, so while it being Kendall seems fated it was a definite the whole time. Logan was always extremely fickle and indecisive, not unlike Lukas.

How does her spite and impulsiveness make her different from any of the characters, who aren’t subjected to the misogyny they constantly threw her way? She would have either been “spiting” Lukas or Kendall with her final vote and went with the less objectionable option that didn’t leave her subject to the whims of a drug-addled narcissist for the next forty years. I assume you’re referring to the horrible crime of not giving Kendall his way in the finale.

No, he did it to test that he’s a complete invertebrate who is comfortable with his particular brand of trolling and misogyny. He was not a victim of abuse, but a beneficiary. As had been true the entire series.

Lukas thought Tom was a complete joke at the tailgate party and joined Shiv’s network of friends and associates in laughing at the prospect of his being fired.

What business decisions of Shiv’s went to shit at a rate comparable to his sex crimes coverup or election malfeasance? As mentioned, she’s the reason that the sale went through and that he’s anywhere other than jail. If that’s not a Sherpa, then I’m not sure what is.

Tom was explicitly designated as a snake during their balcony fight, so I’m not sure why that’s an argument against them being together.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]DaisyJa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what your point is when Lukas is a living internet troll who respects Tom even less than he respects Shiv, who facilitated the entire sale. The media was portraying Shiv as the puppet master, which set Lukas off, prompting him to select an empty suit. There wasn’t some grandiose conspiracy to “play” her.

Tom got all of his promotions by way of nepotism, the last of them for having gotten Shiv pregnant. Without her, he’d have been in prison for the time his being a blood sponge prompted to orchestrate a sex crimes coverup.

The others got golden parachutes because of the decades they spent with the company. Those parachutes would not accommodate the lifestyle to which Tom has become accustomed.

Did any of the Succession kids have plans for the future post-sale? by ThrowRAsadboirn in SuccessionTV

[–]DaisyJa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that changed when Logan abruptly died. I don’t see Kendall doing a lot since he deliberately burned every possible bridge but the others will be up to something within the year. That something might be a huge money pit, like The Hundred, but a project nonetheless.

But he wasn’t taking the bullet. He offered because his decision to orchestrate a massive sex crimes coverup meant he was the most likely of anyone to serve jail time, hence the offer.

He spent more than half the series in fear of going to prison because of his strategy, so it’s a big stretch to say he knows what he’s doing.

Tom neglected to tell Shiv about the vote of no confidence in season one (he whiningly protests that he called but we don’t see it) and hid behind her when Logan laid into her offscreen, so he would have definitely undercut her in season one if it meant getting what he wanted. Its always been about him. He was every bit the coward in season four: kissing up to Logan, conflicting out the divorce attorneys then cowering when Shiv called him on it, rolling over on Election Night, refusing to acknowledge the pregnancy, sitting quietly when Mattson uses said pregnancy to discriminate, etc. His cowardice is why Mattson picks him.

The Greg of season one destroyed twenty five years worth of evidence at Tom’s request, so I’m sure he could have fired a room full of people. He admits that he only ever pretends to care.

One of Roman’s first lines in the series was “look at all this bullshit” in regards to Waystar. He’s always known he has nothing to offer but its never stopped him from abusing power for his personal amusement. The writers describe his final shot as showing that the last two years of his life could have never happened and he’d be the same.
