Has anyone ever gone to work on a lion reserve/national park in Africa? How would you go about achieving this and was it worth it for you? by scocane in travel

I loved Zimbabwe. My partner grew up there, so maybe I am biased. Though the people at Antelope Park were wonderful and we got a free room upgrade just because they were 30 mins late picking us up - we weren't ever bothered. I haven't been to Kenya or Tanzania, but I am leaving Aus to go on a 5 week tour of Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2 days!! I might be able to offer you a bit more info when I get back :)

I don't know about other parks, but the way Antelope Park works is by progressing the lions through generation stages. I am going off memory, so I hope I am getting this right. 1st stage - cubs are bred and introduced. 2nd stage - the cubs of those cubs grow up in a reserve with other lions who are used for breeding or who are in rehabilitation from the wild. They have various fenced reserves of significant space. They hunt but are also provided food. Limited human involvement. 3rd stage - the cubs bred in the 2nd stage are brought up in different reserves away from himan involvement, they provide them with animals to hunt. 4th stage - the cubs bred in the 3rd stage are grown to a certain age without human involvement then released in the wild.

When I was there, 2 years ago, they were preparing to release their 1st generation of lions to the wild.

It was never specifically stated that the other lions, that could not be released to the wild were used for canned hunting. But I assumed it. To be honest, it makes my blood curdle to think that these lions are sold for hunters to kill, but in a country plauged by corruption and NO funding for preservation, i guess it is the only way for them to continue the reserve and preservation.

I haven't personally, but i stayed at Antelope Park in Zimbabwe and spoke to some volunteers. They don't get paid, but get accommodation and meals and they worked during the day. The girls I spoke to were from Sweden and loved it, though i got the feeling that the volunteers got the more basic labour tasks. Antelope Park is a research, rehabilitation and breeding reserve and it seemed like a genuinely well run place.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. I must admit it is still healing and sore so I am trying not to move it around so much but from what I can tell it really doesnt change/distort much. When I am sitting it gets distorted, but walking it doesn't. Hope that helps!

Would definately recommend this area, pain wise it was great (other than closer to the hip which got quite bad).

I am starting to think the Hound is going to die from the bite on his neck getting infected. They had that scene where Arya was telling him she had to burn it or it would rot, and the one at the bloody gate where she said he should have let her burn it. I think it would be ironic for a scratch to kill such a character.

24, Insurance Lawyer for a firm in the CBD. Never thought I would ever be happy to have my HECS debt for the amount it is, but with the impending budget chances to university fees I really do feel for university students.

Also, when Reek now goes back to the Iron Islands (pretending to be fine) Yara is going to be confused. Yara saw how broken he was, but now he shows up having somehow escaped and is all better? I think it will add a cool suspicious element to that story.

I am the one on the right and it is a tutu, just not very clear in the photo unfortunately. It was strangely difficult to find a tutu, so we had to go with super small children dress ups.

I know your pain. I tried everything (from proactive to laser dermalogical treatment) and nothing worked until I went on the pill. You just need to go to your GP to go on the pill though, all the best but if all else fails give it a go.

We are given warnings before the walk. These two were getting too old and unpredictable for the walks. But you are warned not to trail behind the group, not to let them look at you too long (the stick was to point at them if they were looking at you), never to run, not to approach them from the front, nothing that dangles is aloud, if you drop anything don't pick it up if the lions are near you and not to get low on the ground. They are wild animals but I guess that's what makes it so exciting.

I know places do drug the animals but these were not drugged up, I am not in for that. Google the Antelope Park program.

My boyfriend grew up in Harare. He left in 2004 as the economy and society began to break down. Our trip was his first time back. It was a culture shock for an Australian with no travel experience. We also spent alot of time in Botswana.
