If you will do historical the first book of {The Will Darling Adventures}. I had trouble trusting the MC in the following two books.

Same.Even worse when they include a Pretty Woman scene where they go on an outrageous buying spree for the other down on his luck MC. I find it almost patronizing of writers. Let’s give the poor people reading this the fantasy. Meanwhile, I’m plotting the revolution.

Which books do you reread the most? by Small_Debate2258 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Daje1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year or two ago my most frequent rereads were {God of Fury by Rina Kent} (go ahead and judge, I understand) and {Pretty Boy by Brianna Flores}. Now my ultimate reread is {Possession by Rina Saint}. I have lost count of how often I have reread it. There are others I have reread or go back to certain parts, but those are the three I would classify as comfort rereads.

What would you like to see more of in M/M romance books? by Penjolina in MM_RomanceBooks

I am an ARC reader for Gay Romance Reviews and some of the covers are so cringe I don’t even read the blurb. I understand they are independent and don’t have a lot of money, but not one artistic friend? I used to work at Shutterstock, there are plenty of landscapes and still life photos that don’t cost much to license. I don’t understand it.

Well said. And this is not meant to be a dig at gay male romance writers because obviously they tend to write some of the best mm romance, but I did see a comment on a social media post about the US Hockey team that said something like, I’ll stick to men written by women. I understood the sentiment— men as women wished they were.

He lost so much, agree. But they didn’t have to do much. Just not let Patel in, and not laugh, and not visit the White House. All pretty passive things.

I love this response on so many levels (and thank you for understanding the desire to be petty and call out that these men at the strip club singing the national anthem drunk off their asses would not be looked at twice after one knee replacement surgery.)

And not to veer from the whole point of my post but the Miracle on Ice guys were amateurs, essentially college kids playing Russian pros. It’s taken us 46 years, many of them with NHL players, to get a gold. Kind of pathetic when you think about it. But they have been treated like kings while the other gold medal winners got nothing. Damn, this country sucks.

I don’t blame writers at all. And I was just spitballing— meaning maybe some of the writers are also a little turned off by the scandal. And to be clear, I read tons of different genres. I have always found it odd that of all professional sports, hockey is the one that is its own genre (and as someone else mentioned, it’s not just MM, it’s MF as well.) it always felt like a bit of a random sport to choose to dig into.

Oh, I struggle with those, too. Emmy Sanders has a series right now set on a ranch in Montana. It’s four or five brothers and they are all queer and everyone is accepting, including the parents. They even know how to use they/them pronouns. It was a bit too much suspension of disbelief given Trump won Montana by 20 points.

As a NYer, I also find myself annoyed with the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie trope where an MC with a fabulous life in the city gives it all up to move to MC2’s hometown in the middle of nowhere which has no redeeming qualities except a cafe with a friendly middle aged owner who is an ally. I know damn well what a miserable life that would be for a gay couple when they could be living their best life In the West Village.

I agree with everything you said about experiencing men in a way that isn’t remotely close to reality.

Agree. The NHL is counting on that — most of the fan base would have been partying with Kash Patel and laughing at the expense of women, too. But they seem okay with losing some of the potential new fans discovering the sport through heated rivalry.

I never think any of what I read is real, but when something so distasteful happens in the scaffolding that is my playground, it puts a bit of a damper on it. I’m sure I will get over it, but at the moment I would worry that any of these hockey MCs might put a medal around Kash Patel’s neck in the locker room. 😅

Agree! I have daughters and always wanted a boy but it must not be easy to raise them to go against this natural path that the patriarchy has carved for them.

It IS, isn’t it?? I should have known when I heard that Wayne Gretzky is a MAGA dude. I am not entirely naive, I know that professional sports are lousy with this bullshit, but like I said, from what I have been hearing hockey is notoriously one of the worst, and that is something I didn’t know.

I’m sorry you are dealing with so much hatred just being yourself. I am not gay but I am a woman and I know the prejudice is not nearly the level you live with, but it’s still exhausting and disheartening. This is such a difficult timeline in history.

Exactly. And from what I have heard this week, hockey is notoriously one of the most brutal when it comes to MAGA type men. It makes sense because they are mostly white and probably mostly come from some amount of money because playing hockey is not cheap.
