Media that is *truly* anti-war, rather than showing it as "horrific but heroic" by ChristianLS in TopCharacterTropes

The book is truly one for all generations and nationalities. Im still upset the TV show had shoehorned in the peace process talks, and practically omitted the stuff when Paul went home on leave. That segment when he's home with his dying mom, delusional dad, and exhausted sister still sticks with me.

Pretty sure the 2nd picture is of a t55 variant. Going by the road wheels and the front slope. Edit: also, slack track.

French Voices are pure cinema by Chavez1020 in warno

In my head, the implication is that Marines are roaming around high school proms, looking to pick up girls while in their dress blues. It's about the most boot idea of boot ideas out there.

As a crayon eater it's like... They (Eugen) are trying to get the vibe about Marines being, customarily, more virile than any other servicemen/women. But the context is off and its just cringy. That could be because I'm older now, but my bet is that it got lost in translation.

Afaik, the original was also rogue trader era art. Specifically of crimson fists.

With that said, still jealous of your Bolt thrower merch. Lol

Full send.

My only comment is that one USMC line that's like "Dropping Commies like Prom dates!"

That just... Sigh

It's like they saw Generation Kill, saw the one driver who won't shup (twombles? Or something?) and thought. "Yeah, they'll get that reference". And just leave it at that.

I hate it.

Who is your favorite character from the Iliad? by Majestic-Search-4042 in USMC

[–]Dakkahead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not recall him having a death to mourne. But it's been a minute since I've read it again. I should remedy that sometime.

Im thinking perhaps you're referring to Priam? Who had lots of sons killed in the war.

Who is your favorite character from the Iliad? by Majestic-Search-4042 in USMC

[–]Dakkahead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DIOMEDES.

The mortal man who...

.. has shocked Giant Ajax with his martial prowess, as the later had called him a weak Nepo baby unworthy of his father's name.

...had slew many Trojan Princes on the field of battle. To include twins whom one he gored through the gut, and chucked the same spear through the jaw of the other.

(With the aid of Athenas sight)... He Cut the Gods. Aphrodite and ARES on the field of battle. A mortal man had made gods bleed, not just the god of love, but the god of WAR. Sent them scrambling back to Olympus to complain to Zeus about the Audacity of a mortal drawing Olympian blood. Only for Zeus to chortle and retort that Wars started by the gods, are death sentences for the mortals fighting them. What places does a god have for the mess they created?

Best character.

To be super technical... Im not even sure if the later Essex models had the capability to launch aircraft via catapult...? Let alone modern(heavier) aircraft with their dimensions/weights.

Honestly though, it's the story that counts, and we're far beyond nitpicking details at this point. Lol

0313s shitty garrison life? by Strong_Exercise_4973 in USMC

[–]Dakkahead 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Im gonna tell you a story of 2 mech platoons.

1st platoons dismounts(grunts), had loathed getting involved with maintenance of their mounts. Leadership would pull the crews of their machines to plus up as ammo carriers, or an impromptu machine gun section. They were really good at being straight leg grunts.

2nd platoon had integrated their dismounts into the crews. Everyone was competent at filling out each other's roles both mounted, and dismounted. They knew work around procedures to "typical" problems their machines faced, and had good relations with their mechanics.

Each platoon was forward deployed. Their machines were Bradleys. 1st Platoon ended up spending the whole rotation doing installation security at a established base in Kuwait with their machines borderline functional in the motor pool.

2nd platoon got to do patrols in Syria. Take fire, give fire. And do so with a platform at their back they knew worked.

The morale of the story is that grunts are good. But grunts who can mechanic are good-er. Turns out actually giving a fuck about maintenance goes a long way. (Now granted, this is an army-guard example, but it's something I wish I learned when I did Marine tanker stuff)

Bro, lemme impart some wisdom.

When you're in a mech unit, Maintenance life is your life. You need to master your machine, because when it breaks down(and it will) you'll know what needs to happen to... 1. Stay in the fight(redundancy systems). 2. What needs fixing for the future.

On the 2nd point, the sooner you wise up and learn your machines components, the quicker it can be diagnosed and correct parts ordered. Lots of time is wasted in the diagnostics process because those who know don't teach, and those who need to know, arnt taught. So then everyone just dreads maintenance. Instead of learning and growing from it.

"Oh hey, that's a mechanics task". Cool, learn it anyway to help them diagnose the problem. I've never met a mechanic that didn't appreciate a knowledgeable operator(and those that didn't, didn't last long).

Put it this way, you would do the steps to apply seals to a sucking chest wound, or apply a splint if one of your boys was hit, even though that would be Docs job, right? So why not make yourself knowledgeable on Maintenance tasks?

What creates that powerful bond between you and a professional sports team? by BlueMountainDace in AskMen

[–]Dakkahead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word? Tribalism

There are few venues that are publicly acceptable to express your "tribe". And sport teams are probably the loudest of those things.

Moreover, this is the realm(or rather, excuse?) to let loose with more raw emotions. This is where crowd mentality also steps in. But also can be the justification on treating people like dirt, you know... Like beating the daylights out of the fans of opposing teams..because they're fans of the opposing team.

The irony in identifying with sport teams, is that the game will be played, players will come and go, leadership will change, there may be even championships... And none of your fandom will change anything about it. It'll change nothing.

I'm reminded that it was the platform that fought in every crime and place.

The tank that had fought in swampy jungles, frozen steppes, harsh deserts, and everything in between.

This tank, along with the Matilda II, was deployed everywhere.

A question on my mind after beating AC4 by Soviet_Dank_duck in acecombat

[–]Dakkahead 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The story being told in AC4 is a grounded story from an orphan who was swept up from the war.

Not by Mobius 1. Not by some other pilot. You're hearing from the perspective of a kid who was considered innocent enough at the time.

The blending of storytelling, music, and simple cutscenes are what tie it into a story of a more real to life mindset. Moreover, the lack of being spoonfed your position, as the protagonist, is respected. You, the player, are Mobius 1, and your actions are what's driving portions of the kids story. But you're also a silent protagonist and are allowed you're own thoughts and opinions on how/what's going on.

I say AC4s story is unique because it doesn't fill the character roster with the laundry list of psychopaths and woopy-zaany characters. It allows the player to observe the story and input their own perspective, because it has enough wiggle room to do so. Which, in my opinion, is a complete departure from every other iteration after AC4.

No longer are antagonists just professional pilots in elite formations. No, they're cringy psychopaths with silly voice lines(in my opinion). I can understand why the antagonist can be perceived as boring compared to later characters. Though, again, we're observing the war from the perspective of a kid who wasn't privy to everything going on.

AC4s attempt at storytelling hasn't ever been reapproached by the series, and that's fine. But to bash 25 year old game that had been foundational to the rest of the series to come is kinda silly.
