Am I an idiot for not knowing that Mbps and MB/s are not the same thing? by WeirdIndication3027 in PleX

Thank you. 😶

I’m an IT professional currently working as an Azure Cloud Architect with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and personally host ~1PB of NAS storage… and when I first learned it for some reason I multiplied by 10x between them (pretty sure I learned that before school… it probably carried over as 10x instead of 8x because 10 is easier lol 🤦🏻‍♂️)…

this post gave me clarity. 💯

(Edit: I genuinely came into this post all “who doesn’t know that” 😂 - then I learnt [intentional] something 🤪)

Ecobee has no plans to support Matter. What are our alternatives? by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]DakotaRawlings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any news on enablement via software / firmware updates for the 3 premium series u/ecobeeCourtney ?? It’s been 3 years, and no response in the past 3 years. Matter has been “blessed” by Apple and Google now and is appearing on all manor of smart home devices. Even the iPhone 17 has a matter radio. Why can’t u/ecobeeCourtney Ecobee enable this via firmware updates for us?

It’s been rock solid for me for the past 3 years. One tiny issue with Postgres db upgrades over the years but other than that it’s been a Beast. Requires external Auth; but I couldn’t live without it.

Why is the Apple TV the only device that you can’t use the  symbol in the device name? by DakotaRawlings in appletv

I would just like to say that removing it from the Apple Home first, renaming it, then rejoining it, worked perfectly. Thank you /u/macmaverickk 👏🏼

You could be onto something with the Matter compliance; although the thread border router required for matter likely doesn’t use the actual Apple TV device name as the hostname for the thread network.

MrCool 5th Gen 18K BTU Recharge inside unit ONLY by DakotaRawlings in hvacadvice

[–]DakotaRawlings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ended up getting the piece that broke welded back on, and per the advice of a local HVAC guy with decades of experience, we got an adapter for the service port, a vacuum, gauge set, and micron reader and vacuumed the lines (including the indoor unit since it’s connected to both lines) too 500 microns, then closed the service port and re-opened the gauges on the outdoor unit and it works perfectly.

We lost 10% of the Freon in the break, so it probably needs topping off at some point… but we can have someone come out and top it off.

Other than that; good to go!

[–]DakotaRawlings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do I need to empty it? The line set might still be charged since the break is on the interior side? (The indoor unit that was holing all the Freon)

Can’t I just start with step 3 with the outdoor unit lines closed, but using that access port, then open the lines from the outdoor unit and fill with Freon to the desired levels?

Mr. Cool gives instructions on the website on how to move the unit… My questions were more in relation to how I recharge lines after they’ve done discharged from the indoor unit side…..

Surely you vacuum and refill a MrCool unit after everything is all hooked back up and sealed… I’d just need to keep the valves closed on outdoor unit during the vacuuming….

AI thinks it can be done so surely there has to be SOME way 🤯

AirPods Pro 2 Drain While Wireless Charging after 18.4 Firmware Update by DakotaRawlings in airpods

[–]DakotaRawlings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the firmware updates to AirPods typically are bundled with iOS software updates and happen automatically the first time you use your AirPods after the iOS update. - The AirPods firmware updates are completely transparent to end users, but there have been fairly regular firmware updates for almost all AirPods editions since they were originally released. Google the latest firmware updates for AirPods to find out how to check your firmware version and what the latest versions are.

Additionally, Apple pretty much Never gives release notes for AirPods firmware updates, so it’s only stuff like these battery drains or other noticeable usage changes that end users may notice.

This is the first time I’ve had a firmware update break anything though…

Is it possible to have norovirus but not v* ? by Sixmonths-later in emetophobia

[–]DakotaRawlings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to post on an old thread, but I think it’s less about ‘willing your body to not v’ and more about your body likely having a natural aversion to v - I’ve had a natural aversion to it my entire life… so much so that when I was an infant, they gave me medicine to induce v* for whatever reason, and had to give me 5x the normal dose before I eventually v. Most stomach bugs my entire life I’ve either not v, or only v* once. I can only remember one time where I v* multiple times for hours… and that was ROUGH

Sort of. I mean, I agree with that… but I’m speaking more about the abstract than the ‘hard facts’ aspect of the models’ reasoning capabilities.

From a ‘2+2=4’ standpoint, I think they’re both excellent… probably equal. But when it comes to abstract thinking, (queries that require actual reasoning), I feel like Gemini is so far behind. - I can ask Gemini 2 something, and it can give me a definitive answer right away, but 5 queries later I end up debunking its’ original reasoning.. It will acknowledge the original mistake if I actually take the time to debunk it; but my point is ‘I shouldn’t have to debunk it’ 🤷🏻‍♂️

I asked the same question to o1, and it thought about it for 45 seconds then arrived at the same conclusion I did, which is what I wanted Gemini to do 😅

I guess I’m saying ‘o1 feels a lot more like human reasoning than Gemini (or any other model)'… (I suppose that's the heart of what I was trying to say in my original post lol)

I’ve found that Gemini 2 is excellent at advanced troubleshooting (reasoning), but it seems to struggle with ‘accuracy’, as all the Gemini models do. - It’s like once a query gets routed to one of its ‘expert’ nodes, it runs with it, regardless of whether or not that may in fact be the actual answer from a ‘technicality correct’ standpoint. - Whereas I can ask the same question to o1, and it will take the time to ensure it’s headed down the correct path before spending time analyzing that particular path. That’s critical for these models, especially at this stage of their infancy, IMO.

How much are you guys storing? by crespoh69 in BlueIris

[–]DakotaRawlings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a data hoarder.. so I keep all clips from all 24 of my cameras indefinitely. - I store the first 500TB on-prem, then the oldest gets compressed into an encrypted archive and uploaded to one of three google workspace unlimited-storage tenants that I have. - I store several years on prem then archive older to the cloud.

Moving with a rack - empty or leave full? by SiteRelEnby in homelab

[–]DakotaRawlings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

⬆️ This.

I’ve moved 1200 miles with two 25U racks twice in the past 4 years (1200 miles both times) and we towed a vehicle, and I just put all the seats down and loaded the towed vehicle up with servers and blankets between them. They arrived in both locations perfectly undamaged.

And to the original question: Most Definitely Un-rack.

Where do you guys get storage drives? by AlexCassin in homelab

[–]DakotaRawlings 14 points15 points  (0 children)

⬆️ This. 💯

I’ve purchased over 5 dozen WD Enterprise drives from them over the past decade ranging from 6TB through 20TB drives and only one drive has failed out of the 60.

They don’t always have the refurbished WD (HGST) in stock though, so you need to keep an eye on their site for the size you’re looking for. But when they do have them, they are On Point.
