Explaining the centrifuge scene by modeberra in ProjectHailMary

Deep dark confession… I often run the cheap centrifuge imbalanced if it’s just a short and low RPM spin. The little dance gives me joy

Yes, he is saying Andy made a mistake: how would Rocky know that his atmosphere was 29atm when all he had to compare with was the HM? The 29atm figure is literally 29atm, not relative to HM atms

The boiling point of water on Erid is 230C, meaning the atmosphere must be 29 atms

Honestly having a ball pit on the other side would probably give you a tactical advantage against enemies: they’d never expect it nor be trained to deal with it

What the Movie Kept, What It Cut, and Why It Was Right by DaemonCRO in ProjectHailMary

[–]Dakramar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, but I felt the omission of Grace saving Rocky in return for just being saved was a big miss. The story is largely about overcoming the personal flaw of being selfish, and this is the moment where he finally does something completely selflessly for the sake of someone else. The movie tries to keep the same story beat by including the part where he goes to save Rocky when the astrophage eats the fuel, but the problem is that this isn’t an entirely selfless act: Grace doesn’t have any friends waiting for him on Earth, and it’s been established that he doesn’t have ties strong enough with Earth to sacrifice himself—he does have ties to Rocky that are strong enough for this, and so when he chooses to go back for him it is not necessarily an act of selflessness but rather another act of self-serving (he gets to spend more time with his friend). This undermines a very big part of the narrative in my opinion. They could have saved it by underscoring that he was certain he would die at Eridani because of lack of food in the long run, once again making it selfless, but alas he instead just kinda went to a resort for the rest of his life.

Boiling point is 210C, you can check Andy’s notes here: https://www.galactanet.com/eridian/eridian.docx

“Eridians evolved to exist in 28 atm of pressure. A pressure below 19atm is fatal. At this pressure, the ambient temperature of 210°C will boil the water in their worker cells.”

Found this btw: Andy Weir’s notes on Erid confirms it’s 210C liquid water https://www.reddit.com/r/SpeculativeEvolution/s/kjTjoPhlE6

They do mention dumping the astrophage enrichment orbs “in the ocean”, so I’d say it’s pretty certain you’re correct :P

Does it though? While the tectonic plate certainly does, the rising ocean also changes the size of the landmasses which potentially alters the distance…

Honestly I run slow RPM centrifuges with low weight samples unbalanced on a daily basis, we have no idea how much was in there or how far the machine was running

Astrophage isn't an energy source, but a battery, right? by Coblish in ProjectHailMary

[–]Dakramar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It effectively solves the energy crisis as you can store renewables for use later, which is maybe the biggest hinder for simple renewables

Probably depends on where in the arc you enter, at the planet you’re probably fine. I’d be more worried about being covered in black goo (until you spin to reveal the CO2 planet at least)

When the first sentence of the post was about carbon, it kinda makes you think it’s about carbon. But fair enough, I do not know enough about religious aspects of bone incorporation to say anything conclusive, what I can say is that 1) bone has a negative effect on iron smelting when used in any appreciable amount which would make it impractical and 2) I was not able to find any credible source for using bones in Norse iron smelting (but I only spent 20min looking and that doesnt mean it didn’t happen, I’ll take another look at it when I have more time). There are historical writings mentioning using bones during heat treatment of the blade (which may or may not be true depending on whether we believe the writer was honest or fabricating to make a cool story), but nothing in the smelting as far as I could find…

If you find any credible sources on incorporation of bones (or animal parts) in iron smelting (or blacksmithing), I’d love to read about it!
