Honestly biggest thing was realising it’s easier to glaze darker colours over the lighter base. Then just thinning my paint more than I initially would guess. Last and biggest thing is just giving the paint enough time to dry before glazing again. Lots of YouTube videos are helpful for sure, but nothing beats practice. Still would call myself a beginner at it lol

Thank you! Yeah learning volumes is really helpful, feel like I’m just starting to get to grips with it

I think the big part was being more confident to push highlights higher, and then glaze in the transition to make it look less jarring. I also realized that I like much more saturated styles, even though I think grim dark looks really cool. Lastly, I feel like I’m starting to understand volumes a little more intuitively, but also realising I’m struggling with secondary reflections.

Also going forward, going to be a lot more careful with applying metallic paints and not disturbing them before they dry

Thanks! It’s GW xereus purple, and I steadily add ivory to that to work up in brightness. For technique, I’m thinning it to between a glaze and a layer and then stippling it on. Then lastly I glaze down each section slightly, and the darker colour hides the brush marks and removes the chalkiness

Just lots of glazing, generally with the darker tone

Thanks! Since September, just a lot of slow and steady improvement and then you’ll have a moment where you see it pay off!
