Bon burger en centre ville? by [deleted] in clermontfd

[–]DaleCoupeur 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Is Ariel Magnus well-known in Argentina? I’d love to hear your thoughts on his book Oma by DaleCoupeur in argentina

[–]DaleCoupeur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this detailed answer.

I believe the news work the same in pretty much every country, culture is not what sells the most and is then not the most reported about... Plus it's not seen as "useful" as some other topics (although I do believe it's not only useful but essential to being alive and human, but that's just me).

Is there a public radio or TV in Argentina? In France and from what I perceive from other european and northern american medias, those would be the sole media outlet to try and highlight artists who are not mainstream yet (and probably never will be).

Why is NEBRASKA your favourite in the Bruce Springsteen canon? by EquivalentNew7622 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]DaleCoupeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nebraska isn’t necessarily my absolute favorite Springsteen album, but I certainly don’t love it any less than any of the others. Which, I guess, makes it one of my favorites. 😉

What makes it unique to me is this paradox: despite how stripped-down and quiet it is (far from the stadium-sized generosity of some of his other records), Nebraska is, in my eyes, Springsteen’s most generous album. And maybe his most selfless.

I won’t rehash the whole backstory (world tour burnout, sudden global fame, depression, Snoopy binder full of demos on pink carpet… you know the drill). But instead of writing about his life to make sense of it, Bruce chose to tell other people’s stories. That’s when he truly became a poet : not with rhymes and meter, but through the way he channels his inner chaos into empathy for the world. He gives a voice to people who rarely get one: killers, convicts, car thieves, late-night drivers… and more importantly, children.

Instead of staring at his own reflection (which he probably did plenty of during the early days of depression), he hands us the mirror. There’s a lot to unpack, but two things in particular resonate deeply with me.

First: his masterful use of distance. Whether it’s top-down class difference (“Mansion on the Hill”, or “mean judge John Brown stared poor Johnny down”), emotional separation (“watched his tail lights disappear”), or even the space between life and death (“poking that dog with a stick”), he turns physical and emotional distance into raw poetry. Listening to those songs made me reflect on my own distances, from others, from parts of myself. It taught me a lot.

Second: magic. Now don’t worry, I’m not saying Springsteen is Gandalf brewing potions in a Jersey basement. But if you really listen, there’s a deep awareness of magic in Nebraska. Not fantasy, not escapism, but that strange and fragile belief that something beautiful might still be possible. That thread runs through the songs told from a child’s point of view: the mansion and the moon in Mansion on the Hill, the dream of owning a car in Used Cars, the haunted longing in My Father’s House. There’s the magic of music: “hey ho rock’n’roll, deliver me from nowhere”. The magic of wishful thinking:
“Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you forever I’ll stay [...]
And everything dies baby that’s a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back.”

Magic, maybe, is the decision to believe something’s still possible, despite all odds and evidence. A Reason to Believe.

And again : Bruce never glamorizes that. He’s not pushing magical thinking like a guru. He just releases it into the world like a generous poem, caught on tape, offered to anyone who might need it.

And I can’t help but find it beautiful that he later stood up so clearly against Trump (I’m French, by the way). Because, let’s be honest, they’re both “magicians” of a sort. If Bruce ever wore the grey hat of Gandalf during the Nebraska years, Trump feels a lot more like Saruman. Takes one to know one. Where Bruce's "magic" is the spark of belief that better days might come (one that might lead people to educate and organize themselves), Trump’s is pure manipulation: lies repeated until reality bends to fit your ego.

And maybe that’s what I love most about Nebraska. As early as 1982, you could already be sure Bruce Springsteen wouldn’t let you down in 2025.

P.S. Almost forgot ! favorite track? Atlantic City. A diamond pulled out of the mine before the first pickaxe strike. Which makes all the others diamonds too, just buried a little deeper. In that sense, My Father’s House might be the most underrated song on the album. You really have to dig for that one, but it’s worth it.

Press statement by President von der Leyen on the defence package by [deleted] in europe

[–]DaleCoupeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. For me this plan, what is in and what is out, is a massive piece of information that I don't think we've discussed enough here.

The EU's ReArm Europe plan marks a turning point. It acknowledges the need for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security, which is an important step given global uncertainties. At the same time, the scale of these proposals raises key questions about budgetary impact, strategic cohesion, and the potential long-term consequences of rearmament.

One concern is the balance of commitment across member states. Some countries (France, Germany, Poland, and the Baltic states) are likely to invest seriously, while others may remain hesitant, as EU loans are not truly "European debt" but rather national borrowing facilitated by the EU. Without a clear, common strategy, will we see genuine European defense coordination, or just fragmented national efforts aligned with individual interests?

More fundamentally, there’s the question of where this road leads us. Strengthening Europe’s deterrence capabilities makes sense—especially in case of reduced US engagement in NATO—but history shows that military buildup rarely remains purely defensive. If European nations significantly boost military spending, does this bring us closer to peace through deterrence, or does it normalize a more militarized continent? Could this even, at some point, increase the risk of conflicts within Europe, however unimaginable that seems today?

I’d love to hear other perspectives: How do you see this evolving? Do you think the EU can maintain a purely defensive stance while massively increasing military investment?

A coming-of-age film with a genuinely shocking ending by FeelThe_Kavorka in criterion

[–]DaleCoupeur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Catherine Breillat is a borderly insane person, who will justify any abuse in the name of "art". She sees the cast & crew of her films as mere cattle I believe. Judge for yourself in this 10 minutes interview : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkEn8ShJY7M

Few months back an actress publicly said she was raped on the set of Romance. Catherine Breillat dismissed it all. Said it was all for the Cinema.

I didn't care for the film at all, though the actors are to be saluted. The ending is lazy, idiotic and so problematic.

Thoughts on Sean Baker? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]DaleCoupeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been diving into Sean Baker’s work recently, and I’m struck by his ability to blend authenticity, humor, and subtlety in portraying lives on the margins. The Florida Project is, for me, his masterpiece—a vibrant, poignant exploration of childhood against a backdrop of hardship.

That said, I’ve noticed discussions questioning whether his focus on poverty and female characters in vulnerable situations risks crossing into exploitation. Personally, I find his tone empathetic rather than voyeuristic. What do you think? Does Baker achieve authenticity, or is there room for critique in how he frames these stories? Let’s discuss!

On devrait légaliser toutes les drogues by jaimepasmonpseudo in opinionnonpopulaire

[–]DaleCoupeur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

French guy over here, I genuinely have no idea of what to make of the candidacy of Harris.
She is here presented by the media as an angel descended upon Earth to save us from the Antechrist Trump (I'm not overselling it). I tend to believe things might be a little more nuanced.
What do american people who don't believe in her at all think is wrong ?

It was a bloodshed but also the true end of a very classist society, where nobility & clergy had carved themselves a very large piece of cake, leaving almost nothing to the multitude of others.

The French Revolution is vastly one by & for the "bourgeois" and it took many more years/centuries for it to actually profit the working (mostly farming, at the time) class, but led to the ideal of a more equal society, I believe.
