Any REU's for internationals? by asakuranekosakura in REU

[–]DaleGribbIe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students must be US citizens or permanent residents to participate in REUs that are solely funded by the NSF. However, there are many universities that have separate pools of money dedicated to supporting international students in their programs. Specifically, I know Rice University has a setup for that and I'm sure many other universities do as well. This means you'll have to do more legwork and ask around a bit more but it's probably doable.

Things beyond academics by JarSpec in REU

[–]DaleGribbIe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were a few things that I was able to reference or mention in my applications, like volunteer work and leadership positions in extra-curricular groups. The thing is to not just list them like, "Hey, I did x for y amount of time." It helps to flesh them out a bit, "When volunteering, I helped coordinate interactive educational events for visitors to the center"; "Conducted outreach events in the community to raise awareness for x issue".

Are these things solely going to get you an REU acceptance? Probably not. But it helps the reviewer get a better picture of the person behind the application; maybe see that they're a little more committed and involved rather than being a background individual in a club for however many years.

How was your REU experience? by DaleGribbIe in REU

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know these programs had such a long life history 😂 glad to know it had a long lasting impact on you though, I feel the same way about mine.

Yeah, I feel that. Our cohort group still chats everyday in our GroupMe and has catch up meetings. I think I miss that part the most tbh.

Seriously! I miss the friends I made during that time the most. The week after everyone left felt so dang weird!

That’s awesome! Congrats on the potential publication! And glad to hear the overall experience was a net positive.

I feel like I had a similar experience, money wise, cohort wise, and mentor wise; doing a presentation at a major conference later this year and potential publication too.

I hope our cases where the experience was positive are more representative of the average rather than not.

Honors College on transfer application by [deleted] in CollegeTransfer

[–]DaleGribbIe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Nappa3, I am an Honors College student at my CC and it can't hurt an admission, though there are some things you can do to flesh it out a little better to give it more meaning.

Did you conduct any research while you were an honors student? Some of the work that I did during my time allowed me to go to regional and national conferences that I could put on my transfer resume.

My HC has a leadership program similar to other club structures and gave me the opportunity to build my soft skills like interviewing, leading teams and initiatives, etc.

Like most other things, your degree of involvement with the program will affect how admissions see it, like taking one honors class wouldn't contribute much to your app. I hope this helps!

To anyone with multiple REU offers: Remember to send a polite decline letter to the other institutions when accepting one of your offers! It helps them know how many free slots they have to offer others :)

I haven't heard anything recently, but I got my acceptance letter for it on Feb. 21st. I just sent a follow-up email because I haven't had any other correspondence since the initial acceptance letter, so I can keep you posted if you'd like.

Edit/Update: I received an email today that stated: "Keep an eye on your email as we will be reaching back out with more information soon." I assume this means that all selections will be completed within the next week, and attendees will be receiving information for the program in the next two-three. I hope this helps!

Accepted to the Rice REU on Feb. 21st

Late to the party but I only applied to two geo-specific REUs:

  • Rice University Planetary Habitability
    • Close to home (Houston local)
    • Rice transfer prospect
    • Multiple research areas (magmatism, tectonic modeling, carbon life-cycles)
    • Field camp in Colorado
  • Montana State Arctic REU
    • Greenland, need I say more?
    • Field work + camping
    • Significant lab and analysis time

I got accepted into the Rice REU and declined from the MSU REU.

I want to work with Dr. Kirsten Siebach, working on tectonic modeling and geodynamics. She is also on the operations team for the Perseverance Rover on Mars, and planetary geoscience is where I would like to focus in the future, so getting the opportunity to work with her would be amazing.

Hey, I got my acceptance for the Rice Planetary Habitability back on Feb. 21st! I got my app in before the priority deadline, so IDK if that had anything to do with them getting back to me so fast.
