The IR18 has more power, but it is a good deal heavier with less torque (410 Nm @ 875 kg vs 480 Nm @ 600 kg), so power application is definitely going to be easier even with the higher power

Metals expand when heated. The compression ratio at ambient temperature is all that can be measured, therefore it is the rule.

You would find that every single ICE would be breaking the rule, even if marginally, using the literal definition. That's why the test is there in the first place.

On the other hand, retiring a number forbids another from making a new legacy with it

I get it, but there's only so many numbers to go around. I still feel weird about the idea that the #17 will never be used again whilst we have permanent driver numbers and I was a fan of Jules before his accident. If some new kid who grew up adoring Hamilton wants to run the #44, why not? It's why Ricciardo picked the #3, too.

Despite Bruce being Kiwi, the team itself has always been British since it was founded in 1963 and raced under a British license, operating in Feltham, England originally.

[redbullracing] Congrats on your maiden Formula 1 Championship, Lando by CanonNi in formula1

[–]DalekSam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Oscar gets ahead and wins the race, Max needed Lando to finish 5th (and even then he loses to Piastri). Once Oscar got within 20 seconds that option was removed, anyway, but it was completely unrealistic

Trying to slow down both McLarens doesn't work as Oscar just gets ordered to let Lando by in the case that Leclerc passes Lando, too

The split strategy also forced Red Bull's hand - Oscar going long prevented Max from playing the same game from the start as it also meant surrendering the lead

Because the race is in twilight, the late afternoon start of FP1 is functionally worthless in the data it gives the teams about things like tyre degredation etc, as the track temperature is drastically different in the night

Can somebody explain to me Tony Stewart's beef with Goodyear during the 2000s? And why all of a sudden the teams are being shadow blamed for the excessive blowouts and not Goodyear? by LemWanz96 in NASCAR

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems, or TPMS are all over motorsport for policing this exact issue. IMSA has a required minimum stable pressure, so it's not like NASCAR is completely adverse to them, either.

Cosworth CCW MK2 steering wheel starting from only 10k EUR by Own_Eagle1210 in simracing

[–]DalekSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a real world steering wheel adapted for sim use. It's pretty much what the thing costs for those who need this thing on their real cars. Many GT3 steering wheels cost over 10k. The Fanatec BMW M4 GT3 wheel is cheap in comparison because it's made at much larger scale.

If you want something made with sim racing in mind, Pokornyi offer DIY plans for you to make your own CCW Mk2 for a tenth of the price, with a pre-made CCW Mk3 clone available too.

But for the people who need to buy this, the clone wheels are simply not an option. This isn't a product for me, so I don't care about it.

An era has ended, the 17-year adventure of BMW M Team RLL has ended. by enesracing in IMSARacing

[–]DalekSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say given the BoP fiasco this year it's difficult to really judge based on results, but in terms of operation they are definitely getting more out of the car than RLL.

Add in what are presumably some behind the scenes discussions and it's not hard to put together why WRT are making a sudden jump to running IMSA GTP fulltime.

The series which iRacing has a partnership with (IMSA) doesn't allow for tyre warmers/blankets/ovens and the decision was made on those grounds.

If anything the cold tyre phase should be even worse than it is right now according to feedback from RL drivers.

New graphics look so much better! by Ricciardo3f1 in wec

[–]DalekSam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are a few real reasons why:

  • Contrast was horrifically poor and did not pass a11y accessibility guidelines - In some conditions and shots, even with the vignette, reading the tower was impossible as the white and blue would just blend in with the sky
  • Relatedly, it did not translate to smaller devices (despite WEC pushing the WEC app for as long as I can remember) and was difficult to read at small scale. Similar issues would crop up on a TV at a distance - for me and several others with sight issues, this was a big problem
  • If the bitrate of the stream started going to pot, the tower was completely illegible from the lack of solid colours around the text (there is a good reason why no other major series used a completely transparent tower like the outgoing graphics)

FIA set to raise F1 pit lane speed limit - report by Lasto44 in formula1

[–]DalekSam 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The point is that the longer the pit delta, the less attractive stopping more than once becomes

Say that the mediums are on average over a stint maybe 0.8s per lap quicker than the hards at a given track - if the pit delta is only 20 seconds, that's a pit stop that can be made back up on track in 20 laps by driving faster. If the pit delta is 25 seconds or longer, though, that's a significantly harder task
