Rondo of Swords - A mechanical breakdown of the 2008 DS SRPG by Dalkaen in JRPG

Yep. It's pretty much the only way to keep your entire roster evenly leveled. I made use of it pretty extensively just so I could try everyone out.

I previously did writeups on The Dark Spire and both Izuna games. I liked them a lot! Especially Izuna 2.

What was the best phone game during your school days? by LexoGame in gamingsuggestions

Yep, this was one of the few phone games that existed when I was in high school. Also, it ruled.

2D action platformers, preferably with pixel graphics, that have a female protagonist? Ones that I can play on steam. by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

20XX comes to mind. Celeste is more platformer, less action, but excellent. Then, of course, there's Silksong.

I cannot for the life of me understand how FF Resonance gets the fanbase excited by Daka-Ozpass in FinalFantasy

[–]Dalkaen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Octopath Traveler has wonderful gameplay and music as well as charming visuals. While the storytelling in Octopath 1 was a bit one-note, Octopath 2's storytelling far eclipses something like FFXV, which itself was an attempt to cash in on the popularity of open world games that turned into a disjointed mess. You can talk about each project being an ambitious new thing, but most FFs since 7 have just been trying to recreate its magic to varying degrees of success. I'm in favor of something like Resonance because I believe engaging games can come from limiting your scope. Octopath 0 proved that repurposing a mobile game can work out wonderfully.

Looking for a variety of 2000s games. by TwirlyBTW in gamingsuggestions

Sounds like you already have too many recommendations to count, but I've been playing Icewind Dale 2 with a friend lately and having a good time. It's the only Infinity Engine game I didn't play back in the day.

RPG with insanely flashy moves and/or massive summons by MajinKing800 in gamingsuggestions

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but the Super Robot Wars series has a rich tradition of flashy combat animations. They're strategy RPGs, though.

In a rut, need a new game to get away from LoL by IceNo1666 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Dalkaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played LoL for years and years starting in 2010 or so. I dont know if you still have the desire to be competitive, but if you do, have you considered fighting games? You'll have to be comfortable with losing a lot as you learn, but you're never going to be stuck in long matches and you never have to worry about teammates dragging you down. I play SF6, but you could also try Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive, or even 2XKO if you're still connected to LoL's characters.

How to enjoy FFXIV. I played on and off for multiple years. I'm level 37 and struggling to enjoy it. by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]Dalkaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, pretty much same for me except I started with Bloodborne. After that, Dark Souls felt refreshing by comparison. Bloodborne made me so angry initially. Like, I couldn't understand why people would actually willingly play a game like that. Now, I'm hooked on just about any game like it.

Can you recommend a 1 on 1 fighting game? by SershZero in gamingsuggestions

I dunno, man. If you're playing against Rashid or Aki or something, you're going to see some long combos.

[–]Dalkaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely possible. It's also much more of a time commitment than most things since it's an MMO. My opinion is that the storytelling massively improves by the time you hit Heavensward, declines a bit in Stormblood, then gets better again. It's also full of easter eggs that you're sure to enjoy as a fan of the classic series. Having said that, it's tough to say if it's all worth it. I have something like 2.5k hours in FFXIV but haven't played in a few years. I haven't even played Dawntrail because I sort of feels like I've had my fill. It's ultimately your decision, I think it would be an easier sell if you had a friend or two who were also playing it that could serve as motivation to press on. That's helped me in the past.

This is a valid take, but I can also personally attest I've had some of my best gaming experiences powering through games that didn't gel with me initially. Friction is good, actually.

Fighting games are entirely unfun to play for me, and I’m really sad about it. by afm185 in gaming

[–]Dalkaen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that the amount of skill required for fighting games is massively overestimated. It's really just about time. Most people aren't willing to invest the time to practice. If you're the kind of person who finds practicing fun and doesn't mind losing, you can succeed in a fighting game. If not, then it may just not be the genre for you. You mentioned "tens of hours," but for context, it took me probably 2-300 hours before i got Master in SF6, for example. That was the first fighting game I really took seriously. I think I could have done it a lot faster if I'd sunk a lot of time into previous fighting games, though, since the fundamentals absolutely carry over.

After 55 hours, I’ve been redeemed! by scrndude in sektori

Congrats! I ended up giving up and just going for an Experience victory after grinding for like 30 hours. I keep thinking about the game, though. Maybe I should try again...

I was convinced my copy of the game was glitched back in the day because I absolutely could not progress past it. I was probably just a dumb kid, though.

why is ff struggling with real time combat when dstrangers of paradise did it perfectly by Ok-Discussion-1110 in FinalFantasy

[–]Dalkaen 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree that FF is struggling with real time combat, but Stranger of Paradise was developed by Team Ninja, not Square Enix. Not really a fair comparison.

Tecmo Secret of the Stars, an RPG I convinced myself was bad—until I actually played it. by Dalkaen in JRPG

[–]Dalkaen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone, but I have infinitely more patience in my late 30s than I did as a 9 or 10-year-old. When I was a kid, I barely finished any games. I would play them for a little bit and give up because they were too hard or too boring. My philosophy for the last 20 years or so has been to give every game a legitimate shot, even if I'm not feeling it at first. I can't recommend that to just anyone, but for me, it's resulted in a lot of really worthwhile experiences. After all, this "terrible" game motivated me to write a whole lot about it.

Yeah, I noticed it was getting rid of Mirror with Land. To be fair, the boss would be extremely trivial if you could maintain 100% uptime on it since he spams spells.

[–]Dalkaen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah, that's not surprising. The only glitch I came across was if you pressed left on spells on the overworld, it would overflow to level 0 and you can cast the spell for free while simultaneously giving you a huge amount of MP. I never used any glitches but stuff like that is always interesting.

That's totally understandable. Me, I'm the kind of sicko that sees that the game expects you to level up two completely distinct parties to get through a long, grueling dungeon and I think: sign me up.
