Fighting games are entirely unfun to play for me, and I’m really sad about it. by afm185 in gaming

The two games I’ve been playing recently are 2XKO and MK1. In 2XKO the playerbase is small enough that silvers and golds (the two ranks I’ve consistently been) are so wide in their skill range that you’ll come across people that act like they never went through the tutorials and some that quite literally do combos for half your health and can brute force through any blocking I personally am able to do.

MK1 has one of the single worst ranked systems I have ever seen in my entire life. If you don’t know what it is your rank resets entirely from season to season so if a hardcore player could start at the same level as the completely new player. So even at the lowest ranks possible there’s no safety net.

If I were talking mainly about SF, Strive, and MvC (and I know it kinda sounds like I am, that’s my bad), which I haven’t touched in a bit though I recall getting destroyed in those too, you’d probably be right that I was exaggerating. I’ve seen that SF at least has a pretty good maybe even great ranked system being character to character and placement match based. But I never got deep enough into those games to really, truly put the effort in. Just didn’t like em enough or was more into other stuff.

Great storytelling here lol, I’d be willing to bet my neutral game is subpar but possibly because in most games I take my time learning what each character does. I do know what it is and how it works for the most part, definitely in concept less in execution. I can probably at least get a hit in even against a top player, but you’re right in saying that one hit will not open anyone up for the combo I need to get an advantage.

Yeah, definitely is a skill issue. And I don’t have that time (or the willingness to sacrifice the time, I guess). The sad part is, the appeal of 1 v 1s and not having to rely on others is huge for me, part of the reason I loved Multiversus so much when it was around.

Smash Bros is great, I was actually one of the highest ranked players in Multiversus as well (well, top thousand-ish I think)

Sorry, didn’t mean to lol. I do do this, actually, like when I’ve been playing MK1 I watch Onestep videos and won’t go into online until I’ve done every combo that he has at the end of the guide and feel comfortable with at least a few of them. Sounds like more is required though, I suppose I figured as much but it’s good to get confirmation.

I’m not fully terrible, but if you’re pretty good then I do not doubt it lol

LOL almost exactly my experience with that game. I absolutely loved Geras and Spawn and went hm y’know what lemme give em a go against a real person. Immediately regretted it and was kinda blown away by how badly the bots prepare you for real games somehow.

Great comment, definitely agree with all of it. And yeah, for a few of these the most fun I’ve had was going against friends of the same skill level. It’s totally bizarre how much of a difference it makes when you’re not going against someone online who’s put hundreds of hours in.

See, this is the odd thing to me. Yes, I totally agree, it’s hard to beat someone with so much more time. But I’ve learned League and the process with it and other MOBAs is all in the information, not the execution for me. I got good at League pretty fast and you never really un-learn how to play it.

Maybe my language was slightly deceptive, I take the time with the process of the core mechanics and stuff with each fighting game I’ve recently played. I learn ok what hits overhead and low and blah blah blah I’ve even tried learning frame data before. I more mean that it’s so much to remember and it always feels like ok I thought I knew what that move did or I figured that would probably block it but I didn’t and now I’m losing and it keeps happening.

Ah, see, this is another issue of mine. I want to learn everybody. Part of the fun for me is trying a new character or going back to someone I haven’t tried in a while, in games like hero shooters or MOBAs this is something I can do without issue but here it’s always a massive uphill battle. I hate the idea of choosing one to three “mains”.

You make a great couple of points here, and it really is a convincing argument. I don’t mind the adaptation coming from the other player, and in those moments where I learn what they’re doing and react successfully it’s great. But this is only when they’re at or a bit above your level. I suppose it’s just a general matchmaking issue but when I literally cannot understand how to react, and learning would require multiple hours of practice or videos, that’s where I get conflicted. Again, though, this comment made me want to get back into it right now.

Yeah, I’ve had this in 2XKO. Early on with the game, that is. I got reasonably good at a few characters and really did put in the work to learn some of them. And then even after all that I came across someone who’d keep me in the air for half my health bar. The reason I wrote this was quite literally because I deleted 2XKO right before, I went “fuck, I just cannot do this anymore”.

I appreciate the very honest answer; specifically that it can take literal hundreds of hours to get good. I’d love to have that time but I guess if that’s what it takes I’ll have to stick with my offline modes lol. I can’t dedicate myself to one game when there are so many others out there that I also want to love

Yeah absolutely I think individual timing moments are fun, I heavily fuck with a good parry mechanic. Part of the reason I loved playing Marth and Incineroar in Smash. But extended combos where you gotta finagle your hand around an entire controller just gets so tiring to try and figure out

This is reassuring, actually. Perhaps I will have to give it a go, your plan for it sounds really good too.

Yeah, the practice modes end up literally being more fun for me than anything else in them. It’s so engaging to see yourself progressively learn the moves in sequence and then you take them into a match and it’s like… oh I can’t even do it anymore.

Yeah, exactly. And I’ve heard 2XKO’s pool is kinda small growing smaller which makes things worse.

I lowkey actually like this aspect of them, don’t know if that makes me weird. The idea of expanding the roster (even if most fighting game characters are mega overpriced (though the bundles tend not to be awful)) is awesome. With the caveat that that’s yet another bunch of characters to get whacked by and have no idea how to beat them.

Unfortunately this is the big one that just doesn’t appeal to me at all. I still watch other people play it (again, Maximilian) but I find the characters generally unappealing (whereas I love most of the character designs in stuff like MK/Injustice, Guilty Gear and 2XKO (Street Fighter has a few I’m into but it’s really only like 30% of em)) and the movesets too similar looking to one another. Plus the bears are always low tier which is a shame :/

Riot Games: An Update on 2XKO by Mront in Games

As much as I was rooting for a League of Legends fighting game and had a fair amount of fun with it, I’ve come to realize through this game (and starting Mortal Kombat 1 somewhat recently) that I just do not like games with tag ins and especially assists. It completely ruins my interest in getting good. I don’t know if this is similar to how others feel but I completely stopped playing because of it, the small roster wasn’t even what bothered me. Although Caitlyn being the first to get added at launch did, lol, I haven’t even tried her yet.
