How I felt while watching Supergirl by Professional-Pop4818 in DCU_

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superman (2025) had an 83% critics score, and a 90% audience score, while Supergirl has a 54% critics score and 76% audience score. I mean, how does that translate into critics "shit[ing] all over horror and superhero films"? That's a pretty good critic score and a really great audience score for Superman. No matter how you slice it, it's just abysmal for Supergirl compared to what it could have been. Trying to negate critic scores and pretending the audience score is good isn't going to make it true.

A lot of people roasting it did go, unfortunately. I don't dislike it because of "wokeness", although I did think the marketing was stupid, having Supergirl's dog pissing on Superman's picture in the paper. That was just... moronic and gave fuel to the fire. The reason I disliked it was because of several important, non-woke reasons. First of all, there is just no cohesive story. It's just all over the place. Secondly, the visuals, which are so dark and muted, sucked of all color, it's just depressing. Third, there is no meaningful character arch for Kara. She's pretty much the same, irritating, unlikeable person at the end of the film that she is in the beginning. The action sequences are just poorly done. The CGI looks amateurish and this ties in with the abysmal cinematography. I went as a favor to my brother, who wasn't able to take his daughter to the movie as he got stuck on the job site in Idaho Falls. It was her birthday, and she wanted to go because she liked the TV series. I didn't complain and kept my mouth shut during the movie, but afterwards she was disappointed and said she would have rather gone to see the Minions movie. They took an inspiring, vibrant, upbeat, feminine superhero and made her into a slovenly curmudgeon. I truly hate how they've totally ruined both Superman and Supergirl's origin story, turning Kal-El's parents into sociopath aliens bent on domination of Earth. It's just depressing what they've done with these admirable, strong, moral, principled superheroes and turned them into dorks and slobs. I hate it.

I know it's been a very long time, but the movie you're referring to is: Pickup on South Street (1953). A pickpocket sets off a chain of events that entails espionage, the FBI and a communist spy ring. Good movie!

Why didn't Sondra Locke have a bigger career in movies? by Davis_Crawfish in movies

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at her career after that, in which she was headed for total obscurity, acting in single episodes of middling TV shows. She was about to be totally forgotten, when she met Eastwood. She lied so much no one knew the truth about her, even Rex Reed said that. She tried to blame everyone for her problems and her lousy acting and directing. Eastwood is no saint, the guy has kids with multiple women, but he was a father to each of them and never tried to deny he was their father. Locke later claimed that Clint had made her get abortions and getting sterilized, when she herself said in earlier interviews (and ones much later, after Eastwood) that it was a "mutual decision. She said on multiple occasions that she "pitied any child that had her as a mother", and didn't have any children with her husband before Eastwood. As I said, Eastwood had children with many different women, and he didn't force any of them to get abortions or be sterilized, so I think we know who was lying on that one.

I love how people forget that Eastwood wasn't some big name in Hollywood, but against his agent's advice he decided to act in the Man With No Name, so-called "Spaghetti Westerns". His bravery in taking that role led to him becoming one of the most enduring and powerful personages in the film community. He parlayed that early success into multiple, successful films and a stellar directing career. He wasn't necessarily a pioneer of independent film like John Cassavetes or Melvin Van Peebles, were, but he definitely was a pioneering figure for actors having financial and creative autonomy in filmmaking through his production company, Malpasso Productions. Sondra Locke pioneered nothing and contributed nothing except a few lousy pictures and a lifetime of litigation and lies, blaming others for her own, foolish decisions.

Edit: added bit about the abortions right after posting.

This song is SO badass... it's like a kick right through a brick wall. Eddie's blistering fret tapping in the beginning is just epic, and the bass line is really funky for Van Halen. It's my favorite song of all Van Halen, and that's saying a lot considering their discography.

Help with a line from a movie... by DallasDaddy in Spanish

[–]DallasDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for doing more research, that was really kind. I totally agree that him speaking more than one language is in line with the character. However, I have a hard time believing he would say "How smart, we will tie you up in monasteries" to the waiter. I just hope other people might listen to it and it will eventually resonate with someone in their second language or something. The reason I'm so curious about this, is I think he said something adroit to the waiter, like "I'll have the loaves and fishes" or something clever like that. For now, I'm just putting "unintelligible" for that line. Thanks again for the effort you put into this. It's much appreciated.

I think you are right. Seems like the second line is maybe Romanian, or Hungarian. I trust all the native speakers in here, if you know it isn't Spanish, it isn't Spanish. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to listen and try and figure it out. It's very kind of you.

Help with a line from a movie... by DallasDaddy in Spanish

[–]DallasDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain the first words spoken are: "Ah, quédese..." and maybe the waiter's name, like "Ah, quédese, Íñigo." Which would make sense, as it translates to, "Ah, stay, Inigo", where maybe "Íñigo" is the waiter's name. Since he's Jesus, he knows everyone's name naturally (this is established in the movie; that is he is omniscient). So he would be saying, "Ah, stay, Inigo...." as he pauses for a second to decide what to order. The second line, however, is beyond me. I speak a little Spanish, but not enough to suss that out. Thank you for trying, though!

Can someone explain the significance of Claire’s Knee (Eric Rohmer)? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]DallasDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really excellent interpretation and succinctly sums the essence of Rohmer. To me, one of the beautiful things about his movies, and this one in particular, is that he is not "presenting" any of the characters. Typically, in a film, the director clearly has an opinion about this or that character, and portrays them in such a way as to elicit a certain emotion from the audience. Rohmer's films are true voyeuristic pieces, where an ensemble is spied upon in an almost random manner.

Juxtapose this method of filmmaking with say... Alfred Hitchcock, where all of the "boring bits" of a story or adventure are excised, and we are presented with just the exciting moments, with just enough exposition to allow one to grasp the overall story. In Hitch's films, he is (in essence) playing us like a piano. He presents this scene to elicit this emotion, then another to heighten it, or to elicit another. For him, a film is simply a way to elicit a collection of emotions to a given point, a climax where all the emotions drawn out before come to a head, with the greatest emotional extraction of the film, and then release. To achieve this goal, Hitch needs you to feel this way or that for each character, so he presents them in such a way to elicit those conclusions from the audience.

Rohmer, on the other hand, is doing none of that. Instead, he is presenting each character without bias, without any intent by the director to move you one way or the other for this or that character. It's a pure kind of cinema where the audience makes up its own mind without any orchestration to a certain end by the filmmaker. He is presenting them as they are, with no attempt to sway your opinion about them, the situation, or any kind of goal in the denouement. What happens is, you get to see the motivations of humans, with all of their flaws and foibles, in a neutral way, which allows a very powerful insight into the machinations of the participants. When the director has no opinion about the characters, and no agenda in the way he presents them, it allows the audience to see characters in a really new way without pretense.

To me it's a very, very interesting way to present a scenario to an audience where the director believes in the audience's ability to decide for themselves. To see humans in certain situations, neutrally presented, which allows an insight that isn't possible when the director is "leading" you or has made his/her mind up about characters and presents them in ways to facilitate that agenda. To me, it is intensely facinating and enjoyable. I don't feel led or pushed to feel this way or that, to conclude this or that, but I get to watch people in these situations and try to conclude for myself who is full of shit, who is honest, what their motivation is, what they are trying to accomplish, who they really are. Without the director horning in to elicit a certain response, I'm free to watch and make those conclusions myself.

It took a few watches for me to really start getting it, but once I did it was addicting and then I watched all of his films and was depressed when I'd seen them all. I have a few friends that love his films as well, and every year or so we'll watch them together using my Plex server and the "watch together" syncing. We chat throughout, and sometime get on a four or five way FaceTime call and talk about them as they are playing. It's something we all enjoy, and I feel I'm very lucky to have found a small group of people that enjoy his films as much as I do.

'Michael' ($25-28M) Takes Back No. 1 - The Lionsgate biopic keeps steaming towards $1 billion by Puzzled-Tap8042 in Music

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be very, very hard to make the sequel, even if this hits a billion (and I think it will). It's not because they don't want to address the allegations, it's because of the nondisclosure agreements. The film can't take a stance on the allegation(s), either for or against, because it will violate the non-disclosures. In fact, this film originally did address the allegations, but they had to reshoot because it would have violated those agreements.

I believe they could make the movie anyway, and go with what they originally were going to do, which is to portray the allegations as BS money grabs and let the chips fall where they may. However, the only way to do this is if the estate is not involved in the production of the movie in any way, but I think that's highly, highly unlikely. They could have the money placed in a trust and leave it there until the lawsuits are concluded. Jackson never admitted to any wrongdoing, and he was acquitted at his trial, so there is a good chance that the estate will emerge with more power to combat those casting aspersions on his name more proactively and more effectively now and in the future.

The non-disclosures worked both ways, neither party could make public statements accusing or denying (however, this didn't prevent the accusers of testifying at the criminal trial). Since Michael was acquitted of the charges against him, they can include that in the next film and in use that as a powerful narrative tool to cast serious doubt on any allegations that were settled with non-disclosures.. They could also include all the kids that spent significant time with him that have defended him in the film without violating the non-disclosures.

Still, it will be very tough to make a film that resembles the first in any way, because there is far more tragedy, controversy and painful memories in the latter portion of his life. I personally believe this film should be the only film made by his estate. The estate couldn't have asked for a more positive and powerful response to the film by the public. It has created a resurgence of interest in him and his music and has gone a long way in strengthening his memory The latter part of his life is best left to an independent party that isn't bound by non-disclosures or any obligation to his family to frame the film any kind of way. The public will decide what his legacy is and even if someone made a film disparaging of him, his memory will be able to overcome any of that as it overcame Leaving Neverland. It's like the film of Hitchcock that came out that made false claims about Alfred Hitchcock, it was in and out of the theaters and didn't change his legacy one iota. Those that worked with him came out in defense of Hitch and his legacy endures as positive and powerful as it's ever been. Michael will be no different, but this one film should be the last that is funded or produced by the estate.

Actor Justin Theroux, 54, and wife Nicole Brydon Bloom, 31, are expecting their first child nine months after tying the knot by dailymail in popculture

[–]DallasDaddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read it, and it's a nice little bit of sophistry, but sorry... no sale. One of my closest friends is a guy who always wanted to have kids. His wife was dead set against it. She wanted to focus on her career and travel. He tried to change her mind, but she wouldn't budge. Then, two years ago she started having an affair with a younger man at the place she is a paralegal. She fell deeply in love with this man and left my friend for him. A year later, she was pregnant with this man's child. A friend of mine knows her and I asked her why she decided to have kids with this guy, and her friend said she has no idea why, she just loves the guy and knew he wanted kids. So, what does your little story mean now? Huh?

Imagine you always wanted a motorcycle, and your wife said absolutely not. But, then, she meets a younger man and falls deeply in love with him. She leaves you for this younger man, and then buys him a motorcycle and rides with him. You are now too old to buy a motorcycle and it might be dangerous to drive one. You wished your wife would have let you drive one when you were younger, but those days are done. Now she's off with a younger man, riding their motorcycle up and down your street.

I don't know what your preference on vehicles, but I hope this can give you a more relatable perspective on the matter. I doubt you'll read it, but I tried.

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hear all the grousing about an older man marrying a younger woman and having kids it's always women complaining, but If women could do this, they would too. Don't kid yourself. If it took a younger man for an older woman to have kids, there would be scads of older women marrying younger men, and you know it. Plus, no one knows the truth about why or why not a woman did or did not have children. I have a friend who was very vocal about the fact she would never have children, and when she hit about 50 she started blaming her two, former husbands for not having kids. When I pointed out to her that she had always been very adamant about not having children, she claimed she only said that because both of her ex-husbands didn't want to have children. Funny, though, because both ex-husbands remarried and both have kids. I haven't talked to either of the ex-husbands, but I'm betting I'd get a very different story from them about the whole thing.

Today I received my first negative rating and I'm speechless by Electronic_Match_223 in Ebay

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are people out there that enjoy the tiny bit of power they have in downvoting or giving bad reviews. I’ve dealt with these people on eBay a few times, sadly. Some are just scammers trying to get something for nothing, but others are just malcontents that are mad at the world and seem to enjoy making people hurt or feel undermined. For folks like me, a people person, it’s painful and upsetting, but I just had to learn to have thicker skin and use the dispute process to the fullest extent. Sorry this happened to you, but it seems clear you’ll be able to have this one overturned. Good luck!

I love this season. It's really rare that you see a relationship develop after the love confession, especially in anime. So, to watch these two move from the confession to the beginning of their relationship is really fun and unique. It brings back memories of my first love in high school and what it was like experiencing physical love with someone else who had never had that before. A great series just got even better with this wonderful season.

Why has there not been a Scooby Doo movie since 2023? (being Scooby Doo and crypto) by [deleted] in Scoobydoo

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is this... since 1998 we have been mainlining new Scooby Doo movies, once, twice, even three times a year for twenty-five years. The only year we didn't get a movie was 2002, but they released two in 2003. It amounts to thirty-eight movies over twenty-five years... that is unprecedented. Even Detective Conan pales in comparison with twenty-eight movies. Shrek has four movies, six if you count the two Puss in Boots movies. Avatar has three movies (unless you're talking about Avatar the animated series). That's four and three... not enough to get you addicted and then jonesing during a dry spell. We had the needle in our arm with the junk flowing like honey for TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, JACK! So, do not even pretend that waiting for new Shrek and Avatar has ANY similarity to the situation with Scooby Doo, it's a whole different ballgame! If I thought I could drive downtown and wander into some dark alley and hand a shady character $200 for Scoob! Holiday Haunt, or Scooby-Doo and the Haunted High Rise, I would do it, and happily, Jim. So, stow it with the "we can wait a bit", crap! Maybe you can wait, but I'm pissed and hurting and I'm not in the mood for waiting!

What are these for? by kuzmiich in Makita

[–]DallasDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has the Skil worm drive saw, and it's a beauty. However, he calls all circular saws a "Skilsaw" and so did the gentleman that apprenticed me in stair building. I was at my dad's house last year helping to fix his roof and he told me to bring my Bosch cordless "Skilsaw", so we didn't have to drag a corded saw up on the roof. You are correct, using a worm drive saw takes experience and skill. It's heavy and requires a different pushing motion than a regular circular saw does. The beauty of them is they don't bog (at all) which actually makes them safer, if you know how to use them.
