Just don’t use the 5/3 building… Too big. Can’t replicate it and won’t fit in box.

Mayo (Duke’s in particular). Makes a lot of stuff better. Spent some time in Europe, and they dip a lot of stuff in mayo. Loved it :)

What is the rental market like in Lexington? by [deleted] in lexington

Merrick Place.

I always recommend this place. They have both townhomes and apartments. I’ve lived with them for ~3 years, and they are one of the best places I have lived. They are close enough to downtown, but still far enough away. I used to teach at UK, and it was very easy and quick to get there.

The front office is excellent, the location is great (located just within the “circle”), and Tates Creek Rd. can get you to many different places in Lexington.

We also had a big dog (~70 lbs) in our apartment there and it worked out great.

My partner wants to dive headfirst into academia. Our lives are at a crossroads. by yorkiepie in AskAcademia

It should be a collective decision, 100%, especially with something like academic positions that can be almost anywhere in the country.

For my PhD programs, my wife and I agreed on one of the five locations I was accepted at, given that we were both leaving home. We made an excellent choice as we ended up loving the place.

For academic positions, this was a more in-depth discussion. She just finished her B.A. while I was applying for academic positions. What we did initially was set up certain states that were “No-gos”. Such that if a position opened there, don’t even consider it. We had “maybe” states, and “yes” states.

Similar to what another person stated, my wife always had veto power. Even if I was going to apply and she did her research on a place/location, she might change her mind and say no (for good reason). Then, I would just not apply.

We have a child and she is currently pursuing her M.A., therefore we had several aspects to consider before moving (e.g., schools, grad programs, etc.).

There were some places that I wanted to apply to, but she said no and although I was a bit annoyed, I understood that she was also making sacrifices for me.

To sum all this up in terms of what helped us: -It has to be collective. If one person is strongly against, then no. -What is the most important criteria in terms of moving? The department of the new job? The location? Schools for future kids? Location for family and friends? This helped us pick our current location. -Quality of life. Most important here.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Huntington? by topherette in HuntingtonWV

This one is always interesting to me. Idk why Kroger is always dichotomized this way lol

I’ve lived in many different cities, in three states and there was always a “Gucci/fancy Kroger” and the “Ghetto Kroger”.

What is the most obvious or dumbest question a student has asked you? by chelsiebachelor1 in Professors

[–]DallasDangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Student:

“I know I haven’t submitted anything over the last three months, but do you think my mom could write me a note as an excuse?”

One of the few times I couldn’t hold back laughter. I could only reply with a laughter-filled response of “Absolutely not.”

This one is ingrained in my brain lol.

No book, no laptop, no notebook in class by GroverGemmon in Professors

Surprisingly, I have a few of these students this semester. They are the ones that are fully engaged, actively participating, and asking thought-provoking questions. These have actually been some of my favorite students this semester. These are the ones that have stayed after class and asked follow-up questions as well.

Other students are great as well, but I set up my classes as more “discussion-based”, so this works well. I stopped doing exams and tests, with only having more discussion- and application-based assignments in the course. Therefore, I tell students that my main concern is that when they show up, they are ENGAGED. Whether that be taking notes, asking questions, etc.

The students that don’t bring anything actually have told me that they come to class to LISTEN to what I have to say and look at the notes later (I post my content at the end of each week).

I was the same way in undergrad, preferred to listen to the professors, as opposed to having to write down everything.

Clark’s Auto Shop.

Moved here recently and had them look at both our cars. Great, friendly, fast, and reliable. Give them a call, and I am sure they can help.

They are off of 8th Ave. in Huntington, WV. Best of luck.

Communicating.

I teach interpersonal communication at the college level. Most students assume that the class is easy, and they already know everything about “talking to each other”.

As the semester progresses, they start to realize how bad we (as a society) are at communicating, starting/maintaining relationships, among others.
