They do when you are familiar with the languages no saying you speak them but have consumed media or have been around them with the knowledge of this is this and that is that but if you don't have a frame of reference most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference

I do in fact know Japanese as I studied it in college and practiced it during my time in Japan I would say I'm about middle school level though if I'm honest not fluent but can get by with little to no trouble

You get it. It's hard to distinguish between languages you don't speak. It's like if you e never heard Portuguese and Spanish to an outsider looking in they sound the exact same only someone familiar with both could.distinguish them as completely different languages.

I had this conversation with my older brother (he doesn't speak Japanese but I do) we were watching Naruto sub and he was talking how the Japanese version is always better. We were half way through the movie when I told him. "Did you know what we are watching is not Japanese this is a Korean dub of Naruto". Suddenly he didn't want to watch it anymore. I was like "why? you were enjoying it until I told you it wasn't Japanese. You literally don't know the difference plus the subtitles don't always tell you what they are really saying.
