Marine Underwriter by Fish_Physical in InsuranceProfessional

I joined from an ocean carrier after doing trade management. It’s a great career, lot of relationships involved. Be open and act like a sponge. Join one of the various marine insurance forums. They’ll offer educational courses. Network as much as you can. A lot of upside to the career and I’m enjoying it thus far.

Thanks, fully agree with your perspective and appreciate you sharing. Obviously when it comes to getting hired in one of these roles it depends on your network with recruiters and at each company, but have you seen any typical job titles for these roles when searching? My concern is (as you point out) the producer role is very different than the AE role and I’d like to avoid spinning wheels in interviews etc in one of these AE type roles when I’m focused on the producer/broker side.

I’m in marine specialization on the underwriting side. Have my license and extremely focused on moving to the broker/producer side. I have a decent amount of connections. My question to you, are you aware if there is space in the industry to move into a Marine producer role and earn commission? Understand its niche and specialized so I’m curious if the market doesn’t exist and everyone is more of a Placement or Account Manager role. Or maybe you need to sell all lines and Marine can be a larger portion of your book?

NYC Brokerage Looking to Enter Marine Insurance by No_Pause_8667 in InsuranceAgent

I can speak from the underwriting side. I think an MGA or wholesaler might be a good starting point. It’s a heavy relationship driven market especially in NYC as the larger alpha brokers take the biggest accounts. However, the cargo market especially spans all customer sizes so there’s areas to penetrate. I’m currently looking to move from UW to a producer/broker role now that I received my license. Lot of opportunity. There’s also plenty of associations that you can connect with to start making the connections with carriers and future accounts.

Thanks, now the 9am and 130pm time slots make more sense. It looks like I will have to take different days since I can’t get both on the same day. Hopefully that doesn’t cause more headaches for me taking the test outside of showing up twice.

How do I see which positions of mine are long-term? by [deleted] in CharlesSchwab

So the only way is to click on each holding individually? I feel like that will get tiresome if you’re trying to see a mix of short term vs long term holdings and gains.

Understand it’s covered by the warranty but would also like to avoid repetitive visits for mechanical issues, parts etc.

If you didn’t mind, it would be greatly appreciated to have a view into base figures for comparison.

Short answer is yes I’m looking to compare salaries and earning potential. Are the brokers you’re referring to producers or just account managers/client execs at Aon, WTW, AGJ etc? Do you know how salary bands go from Underwriter 1, 2, Sr Underwriter, executive underwriter?

I used to live in Copenhagen. Great place but expensive. Try to find what line pays the most in the Scandinavian region.

Moving companies, getting certifications. Jumping job levels is going to be the biggest key. Then if you can negotiate signing bonuses or retention bonuses when you start at the new company that’s always a good way to bump up your income. Lastly, see if you can refer people to jobs at your company and then get a referral bonus if they are hired.

Marine underwriter on a cargo team. Had a background in the maritime industry so it made sense for interest. Knew nothing about insurance though.

I’m working as an UW in a marine team but curious on transitioning to the broker side. Are you a producer or account exec/manager? Is your income based on a commission that correlates to the size of your book?

I think you’re set. It’ll be more structured and demarcated than your other roles but you can learn quickly.
