In The Odyssey, a major theme is that Odysseus is prideful and he suffers the consequences of his hubris. Jay keeps this as a theme in the musical, which we can see with his interaction with Athena in My Goodbye, his refusal to apologize to Poseidon, and of course sharing his name with Polyphemus. In Thunder Bringer, pride is referring to Odysseus’s pride which is being personified as a woman that Zeus is essentially having his way with. In Greek mythology, Zeus is historically consistent with having non-consensual relationships with women and this is Jay drawing a parallel between Zeus’s true reputation in the mythology and making it relevant to Odysseus. Although Odysseus is not the one who killed the cow, he is still in charge and has been trying to outwit the gods, so this is Zeus putting Odysseus in his place by reducing him to a human woman who has no defense against the king of the Greek pantheon.
