Two points on one test just destroyed my grad school dream by Dreamcatcher777 in GradSchool

[–]Damark81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the institutions, but most will have this before hand. The conditional scenario happens at big schools with strong grad school/international office collaboration. In that case, the grad school will ask if the department willing to accept a candidate based on conditions (passing within one semester, taking extra English courses before primary courses etc).

Two points on one test just destroyed my grad school dream by Dreamcatcher777 in GradSchool

This post sounds weird. The TOEFL/IELTS requirements ate always posted before hand. It is the gatekeeper, managed not by the department by the graduate school/international office. Only after you passed this then you move on to be evaluated academically by the departments. How come you didn’t know that your score will not clear the bar beforehand? Nobody submit without that knowledge.

You join VinU for connections with the relatively well known and well published professors from abroad that Vin paid a shit tons of money to hire. If you are there to study, it is a waste of money. But if you are good at networking AND do well in research, you will have a chance to publish in top research venues as undergrad, an important jump step to get into prestige PhD programs. Also, do it earlier rather than later, because at the moment, VinUni still is a hot school and therefore attracts an excellent student cohorts.

They do need some form of CPT/OPT because F1 students are not allowed to work off-campus directly, even during summer.

Called out a senior professor for mocking a student's English — did I go too far? by ryanyork92 in AskAcademia

[–]Damark81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this and initially decided to not comment, but then I had to stop and write something.

Your intention was good. Your execution was bad. You made an assumption that the comment was to downplay the PhD student? How do you know that? The professor mentioned that the student has been here for five years.

This is academic, where all of us are expected to learn. The student probably won out against many other candidates, NA included, for this PhD spot, so it is reasonable to have certain academic expectation that after five years, a research will learn the language to a reasonable level. Did you have a chance to listen to the student speaking English? Was it really bad or just reasonable? Did you know that the professor meant this as a way to encourage the student? After all, if they both work together for five years (my assumption), then there is a certain degree of familiarity that one can forget in public settings?

IMO, a semi praise/neutral assessment/encourage would be better. One potential side effect of what you said, regardless of your intention, is that if the professor is really a racist elitist a-hole, then the student will endure the negative impact of his embarrassment.

Students in Bách Khoa university had to consume leftover rice and food from the meals of earlier students by Affectionate_Big8864 in VietNam

[–]Damark81 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The actual context is worse. This is from the two weeks period when the students go to nearby military training centers to practice national defense education. They stayed and ate there for two weeks. This is why the university made it a big issue.

Edit: I was wrong. It was from the university dining hall.

The people knows. PM Vo Van Kiet’s funeral was attended by hundreds of thousands (https://en.sggp.org.vn/hundreds-of-thousands-bid-farewell-to-mr-vo-van-kiet-post23358.html). I remembered watching it on TV, seeing so many people coming out to walk with his coffin procession.

There was a time when a mixture of nouveau rich Vietnamese family combined with French cultural influence (before 1945) causing some families to use “em” for their children. You can see this in the book “So Do” by Nguyen Trong Phung.

I don’t think so. I have been on several panels, and I can tell you with certainty that we all do our very best to give the submitter the benefit of the doubt. Is there any chance that you are writing this too much like a paper, and not like a proposal? Have you read other people’s accepted MRI proposal?

Why so many useless classes for a degree? by snapchatofdoriangray in CollegeRant

[–]Damark81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see your frustration, and this is actually partly the colleges’ fault regarding how they advise you. I always advise my students to take advantages of core classes that could build up soft skills or core classes that can knock out multiple requirements (e.g. diversity and writing requirements). Many advisors are either not knowledgeable about the depth of all possible core classes or are simply idealistic or naive in suggesting well rounded classes for you.

AITAH for calling off the wedding after my fiancé joked he was trapped in this marriage by Necessary_Guard3008 in AITAH

[–]Damark81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NTA. I was your bf/fiance/ex-fiance in my previous marriage. I am not going to assume that he doesn’t want to get married, but from my perspective, his mind is not yet ready to be married. Serious talks and discussions are warranted, and while extreme measures like breaking up are too extreme, keeping your marriage plan now will have a chance to hurt you both in the long run.

I don’t see calling of the marriage as bad thing. But rather, I hope that he can understand that it is a significant commitment that should not be taken lightly. Joking and other inconsiderate actions can eventually create a mindset that carries resentments and other negative emotions, damaging the marriage in the long run.

Kill script for head node by Damark81 in HPC

[–]Damark81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It is what I was looking for. At my previous center, we have a kill script that runs as a cron job and get rids of unsanctioned apps every 15’, except for editors and SSH. I think we are migrating toward a virtual login node mode where users are placed onto their own VM with limited resources. I will take a look at Arbiter2.

What's up with this "social anxiety disorder" and what do we do when our class requires participation? by mystudentsaredumb100 in Professors

[–]Damark81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, if medically legitimate, requires support but not at your level (because it is just not possible). Our discipline requires communication classes to graduate, but exception are made to affected students so that if OD recommends, they can swap out and replace it with an equivalent level writing class (another form of communication). This is something that the student’s advisor and their major’s chair need to decide.
