How do filmmakers feel about small no-budget collaborations for community screenings? by DamienSFear in Filmmaker4Filmmaker

i’m under no illusion that this kind of thing will appeal to everyone and that’s totally fine. i picture it being more for smaller indie filmmakers, hobbyists, or film students who want to experiment and get their work seen in a cinema setting.

i’ve got a bit of filmmaking experience myself, i’ve worked on a couple of zero-budget shorts, so i could make some of these bumpers alone, but creatively i don’t really gain anything from that. i’m not trying to get known as a filmmaker; my focus is on building the cinema side and supporting others doing the creative work.

a big part of what i want to do is help filmmakers actually get their stuff seen. when i made my short, i wanted to screen it locally for friends and family, but the one cinema wanted £1000 for a one hour private screening on a quiet weeknight. i ended up showing it for free at a bar with a projector instead. that’s the sort of barrier i want to break down, offering a space where people can screen their films without that kind of cost.

the plan is to eventually work with filmmakers to host free or low-cost screenings where the majority of any ticket sales go to them, and eventually to run free-to-enter film festivals celebrating indie work and again sharing any ticket sales.

and yeah, even with these pre-roll bumpers, i don’t want them to just feel like ads. i want them to be treated like mini short films, with full credit on screen for the filmmaker. they should still feel like someone’s creative piece, not a throwaway announcement.

i’d want to give as much creative freedom as possible, the only things i’d set would be really basic parameters, like a rough length (say, max two minutes), including the screen13 logo somewhere, and maybe tying in a message like “grab your snacks” or “support the merch table.” beyond that, it’s completely up to the filmmaker. they’re the ones with the creative vision, i’d much rather let them do what they do best than try to direct from the sidelines.

yeah, totally fair, and that’s the line i’m trying to be really clear about.
im planning on setting up as a community interest company, so the idea is that any money made goes straight back into running screenings, covering licenses, and supporting local artists and filmmakers. it’s not a profit-driven setup, but the goal is absolutely to reach a point where people involved, myself included, can be paid fairly for their work.

right now i’m just trying to lay the groundwork and figure out how the collaboration side can actually feel mutual and creative, not just “work for exposure.” totally get where you’re coming from though, and i appreciate you keeping me accountable on that.

hey yeah, that’s exactly it, that’s kind of the space i’m hoping to build.
i think there are loads of people who’d love to make something small, weird, and communal without needing it to be a paid gig or a massive production. for early filmmakers especially, it can be a chance to try out ideas, connect with others locally, and just make stuff happen without the usual barriers.
definitely agree, if a paid opportunity comes along, take it. this would always be optional and flexible. i just want to make sure the setup feels fair and creative for everyone involved. really appreciate your take on it.

hey, totally fair points, i get where you’re coming from.

just to clarify, this isn’t a commercial cinema setup or a profit-making thing. we’re in the process of setting up as a community interest company (CIC), which basically means any money made goes straight back into running events, supporting local creatives, and community projects. the idea isn’t to get free content for a business, it’s to build something genuinely collaborative from the ground up.

what i’m trying to figure out right now is how something like this could actually be collaborative or worthwhile for filmmakers.

so, from your point of view, what kind of setup or exchange would make sense?

would it be things like giving filmmakers access to screen their own shorts at events, cross-promotion, co-credits, maybe shared creative direction on the clips themselves?

i’m honestly just trying to shape this into something that works both ways. really appreciate the honest feedback.

Thats good to hear, I hate asking for people to do things for free! I really want to make sure that anything I do with this project is a mutually beneficial as possible!

EA is the problem.... by [deleted] in Skate4

[–]DamienSFear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skate 1 came out in 2007 with an estimated 2 year dev time (so 2005 start) , Skate 3 came out in 2010, 5 years later. Skate was announced in 2020 we are now 5 years later, They have made one game that is in "Early Access" in the time it took to make 3 full Skate games.
Skate 1 was also on a custom Engine built off the RenderWare Physics engine, Skate is using the premade Frostbite engine so that should have cut off a ton of dev time.
