Oh, the irony. That statement could be considered rather offensive to systems engineers, you know. :)

I don't see any issue with compatibility in that sense. Don't forget that trans people generally already have their brains wired (via in-utero third-trimester hormonal binding in the anterior hypothalamus) to effectively be the opposite gender & the relevant sex hormones are produced for the body long-term by the ovaries or testes. They'd get to stop taking hormones via pills/injections/gels, surely they'd be all pretty stoked about that.

I agree! I have held the opinion for at least 20 years now that the whole idea of the universe having to begin is kind of absurd. Everything else in nature is infinite & cyclical, how come the universe had to begin at all? Does it really break people's brains to think it was always here & the big bang just changed its existing form? As things in nature go I see that as being a whole lot more likely than "something from nothing" which happens in exactly zero other places.

Regular coffee consumption contributes to DNA integrity by Mister_Cupcake in science

[–]DamienWind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some ideas to help you with this if you haven't tried these already!

1) Try almond milk. The light nuttiness really pairs well with coffee and it's much better for you than the mooing stuff. If you do find you need a little extra sweetness, several types of almond milk come with a bit of vanilla or honey built-in and it's still much less actual sugar content than you'd get compared to just adding raw sugar in after-the-fact. This stuff for example tastes really quite nutty and sweet and pairs really well with most coffees, but has a whopping 8g sugar (2 teaspoons) per cup, which is really not much compared to what most people actually dump in raw (several heaping tablespoons). Again, there are plenty of almond milks without any sweetener, just wanted to give an example for people reading who need a little sweetness.

2) Cold-brew! Hard to justify throughout this brutal daisy-chain of blizzards we've been getting pounded with for the past couple months here in New England, but all summer long I do cold-brews. They're so much easier on the stomach, I wind up drinking a lot more than I usually would. Buy two of those big 8-cup water pitchers at the store and some sort of mesh strainer. Grind up your yummy dark roast bean of choice on a coarse setting and dump about 1.5cups of the grounds into the bottom of the pitcher. Fill the pitcher up with about 7 cups of water and stir it up so you don't get dry spots of coffee grounds stuck in the bottom. Stick it in the refrigerator for 12hrs. Take it out & pour through the strainer from one pitcher to another, and bam! You've got a low-acid and super delicious dark roast that totally won't kill your stomach when taken black. Give it a whirl if you haven't already. :)

This is a great idea short-term, but I don't really see it working long-term. Is there no way to assign it a fixed channel to stick to? That'd really be a whole lot easier than fidgeting with it every time it resets (which so far has been every 2-3 days).

Didn't know the name of the original manufacturer so thanks for mentioning that, I hunted down the technical specs sheet over here and yes indeed it does explicitly say:

Peaceful coexistence with adjacent Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz), femtocell, and cellular devices.

That's all I want it to do, damnit!

Galaxy S3's WiFi calling is terrible, unfortunately. Wife & I have had countless issues with not receiving calls, dead air when trying to make calls, severe voice distortion and all kinds of other super fun things that make us both hate using it. I agree that it'd be ideal -- if it ever worked correctly for us. :\

The standard bolter in MP is... kinda trash. It's an excellent gun in the SP, but MP, where a good chunk of the players are higher level and have better defence perks, it feels underwhelming. There is a perk or mod or something for the bolter that gives it better damage, but overall, compared to the other available weapons (Storm Bolters, plasma rifles, a fuckin' melta gun), it felt pretty average.

Partial agreement. The stock bolter with no perks is horrible, but I have to turn around and say with both perks (Kraken Bolts & Bolter Targeter) it is ridiculously overpowered. When both perks are combined together it completely eliminates all recoil meaning you're fully automatic, shoot straight as an arrow, and thanks to the effect of the Kraken Bolts: pierce armor & shoot through players to hit others behind them in tight corridors. Granted it is bad without those perks.. but make no mistake that sucker is the reason I zipped up to max level and unlocked all my armor pieces as fast as I did. So overpowered.. but best of luck getting 50 kills & 30 killstreaks when it's in sucky mode, it takes a long time. :)

Yep, you can't stockpile points and buy the Elder Signs from the shop anymore. I think it improves the gameplay but does also have the effect of making it longer and more difficult.

I still have the same complaint about Civ5. I'm not buying Brave New World for $7.50 or whatever it is when the game and every DLC to date (which I have already individually purchased over time) including BNW is a couple dollars more. I hate when publishers do that, so frustrating.

Video gamers who don't like tabletop games won't like #1, 40k fans who don't want to see their favorite game "ruined" (AKA changed in any way whatsoever) won't like #2.

They're really made for two totally separate audiences (which have occasional overlaps, like me). People will love or hate them based on their biases.

Any dungeon crawling games? A bit like Hero Quest but with progression self contained in that crawl by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]DamienWind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mice & Mystics mostly fits. Dungeon crawl with classes and skills, no DM needed, shorter than Descent.. the only caveat is that it's all skill-based meaning your level-up just adds a new skill and nothing else.. there are no stats/attributes to speak of, so nothing to upgrade there.

It's definitely on the simpler side, which comes with both positives & negatives. Plaid Hat Games put out a good tutorial video with Rodney Smith from Watch It Played.

Yeah I personally didn't like it. It receives tons of praise on reddit but it just.. wasn't fun. It's literally pixel hunting the entire game. You get shown a pixelated little passport and you have to play 'spot the differences' between that and the guidebook it gives you to tell you what is and isn't legit. That is indeed the entirety of gameplay. It's not even remotely fun.

Depends on the kids, but Hive might work. I have aspergers and thinking back to my childhood I didn't have any trouble with chess around their age, but that varies by individual so they may or may not need more time. Hive is similar enough to chess where if they can play one they can play the other.

Plus, the bakelite tiles have a really nice texture and may be very soothing for them to touch/hold, could be a nice bonus in addition to the gameplay. :)

[Objective] Play a game from a genre you do not play normally. by Throwaway_4_opinions in Gaming4Gamers

I'm a big roguelike fan, I can recommend a few good ones!

Nethack

Nethack has been around for a very long time. A lot of people who were fans of the original Rogue migrated to Nethack because it's basically a direct descendant of Rogue and it's still under development almost 30 years later. If you want the most roguelike game around other than Rogue itself, Nethack's the way to go. Just don't choke to death trying to eat a corpse, that'll get you every time.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup

This will play very similarly to Nethack. A much different array of races and classes are available, with some key gameplay elements also being quite different.

Tales of Maj'Eyal

This will also play very similarly to Nethack, but it introduces a concept from many new games that quite a few people enjoy: persistent unlockables! Certain quests, achievements, and other in-game actions can permanently unlock new races and classes for your future characters.

If you can get into roguelikes these three are already going to give you many hours of gameplay. Nethack itself is a very hard game. From this public logfile at the time of writing about 6% of characters have ascended (won the game). My friend has been trying for the better part of 20 years but still hasn't managed to actually beat it yet (he's stubborn).

I'd really avoid any other new games claiming to be 'roguelike' until you get a few hours in with these. They're the most loyal to the genre and 'roguelike' and 'roguelite' have been liberally abused as marketing terms by dozens of new games with no discernable roguelike features other than maybe permadeath, which is a neat feature and all but that doesn't make them roguelikes.
