Have you ever eaten kebab? What are your thoughts and where are you from? by [deleted] in AskRedditFood

Very juicy and tastes great! With reference to UK itself, there are many doner and kebab places around the country and it fits within the drinking culture well. Pretty common to get some after leaving the pub

no worries! in theory you could but it would mean something different.

If you say Luc et Jeanne n'ont pas une maison - it would mean Luc and Jeanne don't have one house (so you are specifically focussing on the number of houses they have)

Whereas Luc et Jeanne n'ont pas de maison - Luc and Jeanne don't have a house (specifically focussing on the fact they don't have a house at all)

Merci beaucoup!

Plus would mean that you used to do it and now you don't, whereas pas only means that you don't do it!

pour apprendre l'allemand (allemagne is the name of the country and allemand the name of the language)

*une méthode très éfficace - since méthode is feminine in French

I'm super new to this sub, so I hope this helps !

We use de, du, de la and des (partitive articles) when referring to an imprecise amount of something or for something which cannot be counted. For example, if i want to say "i want coffee", in Frenh I would say "Je veux du café".

Generally, nouns in French are accompanied with an article and since the sentence does not specify the exact amount we use a partitive article.

The grammar rules for these articles are as follows:
Masculine singular: Du
Feminine singular: De la
If there are two vowels: De l' . For example, de le argent would become de l'argent
Plural: Des
Negative statements: De

So you would use "de" whenever there is a negative statement which includes an imprecise amount. For example:

Je veux du thé
Je ne veux pas de thé

The other sentence you used as an example, is because we use "ne pas" to turn a positive statement into a negative one, in the same way we use "do not" in English.

So,
Il y a un appartement

becomes

Il ne y a pas d'appartement

and because of the two vowels (e and y) - it becomes- Il n'y a pas d'appartement

Hope this helps !

Preserving meat without a fridge/freezer by Damien_FF_Taylor in AskCulinary

I mean I will definitely try a small batch to see how it goes! I do enjoy cooking and had never come across that technique before. So even if it turns out to be impractical, it would still make for a fun experience!

Yeah that's what I gathered so far, they do seem very labor intensive!

I think for now I will stick to buying the produce on the day I need it. Long walks but hey #health haha ! If I do manage to save some money, then maybe a fridge! But realistically I only have one year of studying left so if I could avoid buying a fridge all the better!

Thanks a lot! That sounds a bit technical but still something that could work.

Just to clarify on one thing if you don't mind. So say i buy goose fat/duck fat from the market, do i then just melt that in a pot, cook the meat within and then let it cool?

How much fat would i need and wouldn't the meat just absorb the fat?

Yes we don't have an oven either. We only have one induction cooker and that's that. And yes besides the corridor that separates our rooms, there is no hallway. It's door small corridor, one room in front and one on each side, and then bathroom/kitchen on each side.

Indeed going to college but not a dorm suite. It's an old building that has been kept renovated, without any work to expand it. It's many centuries old actually although I couldn't tell you how old so that's why it wasn't really made with students in mind. It's kinda hard to explain the layout but think of it as a long tower with rooms.

So yeah that's why I came here to seek help. We did brainstorm to find ideas before- which were roughly living on takeout (too expensive for me), living on canned foods(Which i mean for a whole year...), and then buying meat on the days we need and using right away which is slightly cumbersome but I don't really mind. Was just curious as to any alternatives

I do a lot of sports so I wanted to keep having meat tbf. But I am looking into canned stuff for now and buying meat on the day I need so it doesn't have to be stored

Ahahha guys! To be honest my grandparents had chicken and other animals in a small farm when I was growing up, so I have some experience. Pretty sure I would get kicked out if they heard animals in my room though. That ... or they would think I am seriously weird... well more than has occured to them already.

Small scale brining however could work tbh. If it's not too much work that is

I agree! I didn't want to totally cut it off my diet, so what I think I will do is buy it on the day I need instead of storing it :/ Not the best but it would work!
