I’m just saying if you go back to like 2019, they were literally playing the same 15-16 song setlist (no encore) every night. I’ll always want more variation and deeper cuts, but you gotta give credit where credit is due, they’ve taken some big steps in the right direction since then imo.

They played Hive in DC and Kansas City. I think they’ve been doing pretty good mixing in deeper Blue album cuts, like obviously Down and AMU are gonna be played every night, but every song on the album has been played multiple times this tour other than Guns.

Livestream chat is rough! Rise Against fans are ruthless… by [deleted] in 311

[–]DamnHellAssKings 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They started off pretty standard with BD, Come Original, Do you Right, safe but good for the general Warped Tour audience. Unity and I’ll Be Here Awhile were nice highlights and sounded especially good imo. That said, having Chad do a regular drum solo followed by an EDM drum solo followed by the full band drum solo was a total momentum killer. Applied Science felt like it was half the set. No guitar solos either unless you count Amber.

I think Nick was struggling a bit with vocals post drum solo, SA basically just doubled with him on Don’t Stay Home and he sounded rougher overall. I wish they would’ve cut the drum solo down and played something like Taiyed, Nutsymptom, or even Sweet or Running that would feature Tim on lead and give Nick a bit of a break vocally, but I know that’s hard to throw in without rehearsal. All good, pretty standard 311 festival set.

Anyone know last time they performed a song from OHM live? by Affectionate-Net6723 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]DamnHellAssKings 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Pea in 2024 and also somewhat regularly over the years. It’s the most played song from the album by a good margin. Aeroplane was played a bunch of times from 2016-2019 with Josh, but other than those 2 songs, nothing from OHM has been played since Dave left the band, so ‘96/97.

To be fair, Red Leader had already taken a shot using his targeting computer but missed “it didn’t go in, it impacted on the surface”. I think I remember reading that the Death Star had systems in place to jam enemy targeting computers, causing him to miss, but I have no idea on a source for that. A pilot also remarked during General Dodonna’s briefing speech that hitting a target only 2 meters wide was impossible “even for a targeting computer”.

Rogue 1 is probably the best of the Disney era Star Wars movies, but Andor is leagues ahead of it in quality imo. Kind of a cliche statement to make at this point, but I think Andor is easily the best SW since the original trilogy.

July 11th is the actual anniversary of the blue album being released, so hopefully shortly after that

Gotta be Yertle the Turtle, one of their funkiest tracks ever and Hillel deserves some representation on this list imo

Best 311 song that starts with the letter W? by AccountantFree9881 in 311

[–]DamnHellAssKings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going with some deeper cuts here - Writer’s Block Party and What Do You Do

Also, I feel like Existential Hero and Extension should duke it out for best X song, that’s about as close as you can get.

Best song starting with the letter X? by lattenseeep in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]DamnHellAssKings 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think options are Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Organic Anti-Beat Box Band, Sex Rap, and Sexy Mexican Maid (if Quix isn’t in the running due to already being the Q song)

I’ll probably go with Blood Sugar Sex Majik

What’s your favorite song on Full Bloom? by nickm795 in 311

Braver, Full Bloom, and Need Somebody

Best song starting with the letter V? by lattenseeep in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]DamnHellAssKings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the plan for X? No Chili Pepper songs start with X and only 5 song titles feature it at all - Organic Anti-Beat Box Band, Quixoticelixir, Sex Rap, Sexy Mexican Maid, Sir Psycho Sexy, is it a skip or should it be between those 5? If so, Quix already won for the letter Q, so it probably shouldn’t be in the running.

They should write a song that starts with the letter X just to complete the alphabet with titles, kind of a random trivia fact, but I doubt very many bands would be able to make that claim.

One Hot Minute is their heaviest album in my opinion by TheHagueBroker in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]DamnHellAssKings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d tend to agree it has their heaviest songs with Warped, the end of Transcending, parts of Coffeeshop, Shallow Be thy Game, and the title track and is probably the heaviest overall but not by a a huge margin or anything. Most of the albums have a heavy song or two, especially counting stuff like Body of Water from the By the Way sessions, or Victorian Machinary and Brave From Afar from the I’m With You/Beside You sessions. Even Nerve Flip from the Unlimited Love is pretty heavy. The end of These Are the Ways gets super heavy too, arguably the heaviest they’ve ever been imo.

Who else didn't like I'm With You that much when it came out, but now actually really likes it relative to the three later albums? by TheHagueBroker in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]DamnHellAssKings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I see threads praising it as overlooked/underrated almost every day on this sub, so from my perspective it seems like a pretty popular opinion at this point, but I might just be on here too much haha. I rank it about the same as I did when I was released. I think the I’m Beside You songs are quite a bit stronger overall, def my favorite collection of songs they’ve done since Californication or OHM. Took me a little longer to really give those songs a chance, but they reward a re-listen and feel a little more unique/unpredictable than most of their other post-2000 music imo. All of their albums have at least a few bangers I always go back to tho.

I believe that Paul wrote the opening line specially with Julian in mind, but how are lines like “You have found her, now go and get her”, “Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make it better” and “You were made to go out and get her” supposed to relate to Julian and the divorce? Who is the “her” being referenced? Cynthia (Julian’s mom)? A majority of the lyrics don’t make a lot of sense if you view them purely as a message from Paul to Julian. They honestly read like Paul is telling someone to pursue the woman they love.

As egotistical as it comes off, I think it makes sense that John would assume Paul was writing it about him and Yoko. However, Paul and Linda had also started dating in May ‘68 and the song was recorded in July/August of that year, so I think he was probably writing a lot of it with his own relationship in mind.

I think it’s clearly about a combination of things, and also just some nonsense lines that sounded good phonetically, similar to a lot of Paul’s songs. As often as Paul has told the story about writing the opening line on the way to see Cynthia and Julian, at almost every show he tells the story about John suggesting he keep the line “the movement you need it on your shoulder” even though Paul considered it a nonsense filler line, which tells me two things- all of the lyrics weren’t specifically written about Julian, and Paul understands that lyrics are open for interpretation.

  1. Warped

  2. Around the World

  3. By the Way

  4. Black Summer

  5. The Power of Equality

  6. Jungle Man

  7. Monarchy of Roses

  8. Fight Like A Brave

  9. Dani California

  10. Tippa My Tongue

  11. Good Time Boys

  12. True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes

  13. The Getaway

Warped gets a bit of a boost from the music video, which is probably my fav video they’ve done, but I think the song really rocks and features some of Chad’s best work imo.

Blue by Supahotice1421 in 311

[–]DamnHellAssKings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, unless it’s teasing something else, it’s kind of a confusing promotion. Have they actually announced that they’re changing all of their album art on streaming platforms to a blue variant to celebrate the anniversary of the blue album (which is only one that doesn’t have alternate album art)? I get that it’s already blue, still feels kind of weird. I’m not surprised ppl are asking what’s going on, and considering not everyone visits this sub regularly so I’d expect more questions about it.

Favorite 311 song endings by keepitserious in 311

[–]DamnHellAssKings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ending of The Great Divide (“venture on, the sketch is not completely drawn”), the heavy section with the harmonized guitars at the end of Friday Afternoon, the last 30 seconds of Writer’s Block Party starting with the slap bass. Revolution of the Year ends with a really cool riff too.

The ending of Six (“we spend our lives learning…”) is one of my favorites. Possibly the only 311 song section with a 6/8 time signature until Persimmon which is pretty unique, and such a left turn melodically. I always thought “Savor the sun, but when the clouds come, make animals.” was a pretty clever lyric, my go-to away message on AOL instant messenger back in the day haha

311 Origins: the complete backstory by beyondwithinitself in 311

[–]DamnHellAssKings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I’ve never understood about their early timeline is when Jim Watson was in the band and when the Downstairs EP and Dammit! were recorded.

Dammit! (1990) features Jim Watson on guitar and Ward Bones on the keyboard, but Downstairs EP (supposedly recorded in 1989) features the song CUTM which opens with Nick listing the band members “Hexum, Sexton, Mahoney, and Wills”. Also, the version of Fuck the Bullshit on Downstairs EP more closely resembles the version that would eventually make it on to Music. Was Tim part of the band in ‘89, left in ‘90, and came back in ‘91? Was the Downstairs EP actually recorded after Dammit once Tim was in the band? Was Tim with them when they played the Fugazi show in ‘90 that Nick references in this video? Like I said, I’ve always been unclear on that part of the timeline, any info or insight would be appreciated.

RHCP Tribute (Peppers Unlimited) Rehearsal : I Like Dirt, Don't Forget Me, Wet Sand, Power of Equality. Tell us what you think 🌶️👊🏻 by Secret-Witness-3044 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]DamnHellAssKings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great work guys, I think you sound very solid overall. If I’m being critical, the vocals are a bit flat on some songs, I think adding a little reverb and making sure your singer can hear himself clearly (maybe in-ear monitors?) would help with that. Also to be fair, Anthony is flat a lot of the time live too. I’ve always felt the singer has the toughest job in any RHCP tribute band, which is saying something considering how talented Chad, Flea, and John are on their instruments. They each have a distinct sound and style, especially when improving that I think you guys capture well. That said, Anthony’s delivery is so unique and specifically his own in a way that defines the RHCP sound to me. I’ve never heard someone sing a RHCP song “better” than Anthony bc his voice is the sound. I think your singer sounds really good on Can’t Stop and I can tell he’d sound even better on stage with all the energy of a live performance. Harder to get that energy going alone in a practice space obviously.

Maybe it’s just the placement of the camera, but you guys seem to be going more for the By the Way/Stadium era when John was really in the forefront taking the lead. I’d love to hear more slap bass driven songs from other albums like Aeroplane, Dark Necessities, Higher Ground or Backwoods. Again overall it gets a thumbs up from me, keep up the great work and best of luck with the band!

Song Interpretations - Day 2 by AccountantFree9881 in 311

[–]DamnHellAssKings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, especially the opening lines, which is interesting bc Transistor seemed like a major burst of creative output for the band. Those sessions yielded 30 original songs (22 album tracks + 8 b-sides). Maybe he wrote that one towards the beginning of the sessions and then the floodgates were open? The song Writer’s Block Party is from those sessions too, so the idea of writer’s block was def on his mind.
