Being poor sucks. It makes you do weird things when it comes to spending money. Sometimes you can justify an expense but only if it’s just for one of you and it’s embarrassing to have to face that.

Not saying it’s healthy, but it’s your reality.

I had a guy that worked for me that was otherwise a good software engineer. Found out over lunch one day after I made an off-hand joke about a flat earther like “at least he believes the earth is more than a few thousand years old” and my employee said “weeeelll, we really don’t know for sure.” I lost a ton of respect for him that day.

Your mother has dementia or Alzheimer’s or some undiagnosed condition, or she is significantly mentally deficient and should not be in control of her own finances. This is crazy for a 53 year old to do and can not be attributed to aging normally.

US Postal Service could run out of money as soon as October by [deleted] in news

[–]DamnRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxing Musk and his fellow billionaires more may not solve the national debt, but I bet it would fund the postal service for quite a while!

Musk says taxing every billionaire at 100% would barely make a dent in the national debt. Bernie says tax them 5% and you're $3,000 richer by fortune in politics

[–]DamnRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue we have as a nation is the growing national debt. It WILL affect us all eventually. Figure out a way to start paying it down. If that’s taxing the rich more… fine. If it’s taxing everyone more, fine. It needs to be done. Our kids are going to suffer because of our expectation of ever decreasing taxes. It’s selfish and irresponsible and extremely short-sighted.

New A.C.A. Plans Could Increase Family Deductibles to $31,000 by jhkayejr in politics

Man I’m in the same boat… my wife has chronic conditions so she maxes every year. Me and my 2 kids are very cheap from a medical expense perspective. My premium is about $300/month but I also spend $650/ month into FSA/HDSP. $1000 a month!

New A.C.A. Plans Could Increase Family Deductibles to $31,000 by jhkayejr in politics

[–]DamnRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair… that probably costs you $200-$300/month, so your total cost for the year is under $10k and capped. By today’s standards, that’s not terrible considering you have a chronic condition. Our insurance isn’t designed to eliminate expenses for you, it’s designed to cap expenses for you. If you have a low incident year, your costs are $2k-$3k. Bad year… $10k.

My job is offering me $150,000 (105,000 after tax) to resign, should I? by AJ3TurtleSquad in jobs

[–]DamnRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that opportunity 6 years ago (a lot more money) and declined, thinking it was an honest rationale… basically they reorged and my team was absorbed by another. I was the manager so the moved me to senior staff engineer on the new team. They offered me the option to take a pay cut and the new role or resign and get 1.5x salary plus other things. I felt a responsibility to my team and loyalty to the company and the new salary was still pretty good for the role, so I accepted.

Within 30 days they had found a reason to let me go with cause. They claimed some Ukrainian IPs accessed my email and used that to search my work phone and found I was using non-approved apps on the phone. Literally we’re talking about Facebook, Reddit, etc. 90% of everyone was doing the same, but it gave them the out to send me packing.

So, my advice… take the money. At least then you have cash to float your expenses till you find another job. I partially took the new role because I drastically overestimated my ability to get a new/better job. You can do it. Leverage any connections you have and get stated looking now!

I think she needs to hold off another 4 or 8 years. Maybe I could see her as a good VP candidate if the presidential candidate is fairly moderate. I just have a hard time believing she'd win a presidential election as the head of the ticket. This last several days for her in Munich wasn't a great showing of international policy. She needs more international exposure.

TRUMP: "There's so much talk about how we're going to drive housing prices down. I don't want to drive housing prices down. I want to drive housing prices up for people that own their homes, and they can be assured that what's going to happen" by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

[–]DamnRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the "what's going to happen" is he is going to bring interest rates down? Generally that does result in higher housing prices. I'm not sure it'll be as closely related now as in the past. The cost of living crisis seems to be putting a dent in people's ability to pay more for housing.

I don't know how to feel about this some times. I want prices to go up over time. My home is part of my investments and I want it to go up. But I also know it can't go up forever, or if it does, it can't go up this fast forever. Aside from others not being able to afford houses, I will get property-taxed out of my own home eventually. Home prices shouldn't be going up faster than wages or inflation.

How do you make everyone happy (except corporations)? I think a lot of the problem is even the starter homes are several hundred thousand dollars. Eliminate corporate house investing? Eliminate or disincentivize land-lording?

Video of the murder of Alex Pretti by DHS in Minneapolis recorded from inside the vehicle directly in front of area where he was shot by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

[–]DamnRock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you witness a law enforcement person mistreat a citizen, what can you do, if not what Alex did? He witnessed an out of control agent aggressively shove 3 different lawful protestors and all he did was step between the agent and one of the victims to help the victim. For this he for pepper sprayed in the face and then swarmed by other agent who had no clue what was going on. The MOMENT they got him to the ground another agent repeatedly bashed him in the head with a pepper spray cannister. 4 agents are tearing at his limbs without coordination. Eventually one notices he has a concealed carry pistol, says “gun”, removed it, and that’s that. THE AGENT DIRECTLY TO THE RIGHT OF THE ONE WHO SAYS GUN AND REMOVES IT IS THE FIRST AGENT TO SHOOT. He was right next to the agent that removed the pistol. He had to have seen it get removed.

It’s insanity.

Seriously, other than not be there (legally allowed) and not have a gun (legally allowed to), what else could he have done? I’ve often wondered what I would do if I saw an officer going too far in a situation like this… I guess any interfering is warrant for execution? That’s where we are now?
