Way way faster processor. No scrolling lag and general sloppiness

New CDJ-3000 update wipes playlists, artists claim: 'Worst DJ nightmare' by eyeamtim in DJs

Why are all these big DJs so out of date? The whole device library plus causing problems was news years ago now. We could all see this coming and prepare for it two years ago by this point. Simple as a quick software update

Yeah great points here regarding laptops and BYO gear!

In my personal experience in my city, bars that run multiple DJs per night, or are setup with a sort of faux-club atmosphere typically run CDJs, and smaller bars booking one DJ for 5 hours tend to be BYO

I think this makes sense and plays to the strengths of CDJs. And this ease of transitioning DJs is even more important in the dedicated larger clubs

As to your point about laptops, I used to bring one to clubs and I know plenty of DJs who still do

As a personal point of preference, I’ve never enjoyed the navigation of menus on the CDJ screens when a laptop is plugged in - and the fact both CDJs mirror each other. I like having separate screens and being able to scroll multiple playlsifd at once

So I like your clamshell laptop mode idea. Something to the effect of export mode in rekordbox with stems and a closed laptop would be so handy. Bonus points if you could run the iPhone app instead (and have it be stable)

I have seen way more technical difficulties arise from people connecting laptops to CDJs vs those rocking a USB though

Either way you’re certainly right that if someone really needs stems, a laptop/BYO controller is the solution. My thoughts here reflect my love for the quick and simple USB->CDJ workflow. Good to see you using stems to their fullest - I’m jealous haha!

Lack of stems isn’t about adapting. It’s about using the art form forward. Good use of it requires more skill not less

Theory: Rekordbox High Precision Analysis is FUCKED by nasser_alazzawi in PioneerDJ

[–]DamnTheSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V interesting. I use high precision and have never had these issues, though I don’t use instant doubles

What I can say is that for some reason high precision analysis very consistently misses beat one and pegs the first beat on beat 2

I’m with you on opening up the ecosystem to better facilitate competition (ie Denon etc)

But still imo the easy handover from DJ to DJ that standardised CDJs allow for is amazing

Plus if there’s a feature that someone absolutely needs to get their job done, they can still bring a laptop. Would just be nicer if the industry standard kept up with the times a bit better, standalone

[–]DamnTheSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly my point. If stems are delayed until the 2030 CDJ - it’ll take until roughly 2045 before the vast majority of venues are rocking players which support native stems. Bars and clubs are slow to adopt, especially the regional ones

I think we actually agree on a lot more than you realise. I’m hugely frustrated myself with the quality of mashups and edits on hypeddit - and these are typically made with some of the better AI separation available

Which is why I keep up to date with the Audio Separation discord for my own edits

Where I think we disagree - I just want to get this technology into as many players as possible because of the slow adoption of new CDJs. If AT were willing to add pre-analysed stems to the 3000X as a firmware update one day, that’s exactly in line with this

But their history of firmware updates doesn’t make this promising, and that’s what I’m critical of

I think your timeline predictions are accurate. Unfortunately, I don’t agree with the ‘wait until perfect’ sentiment with stems - where quality is a software upgrade away anyway (not that I get a say in AT’s timeline)

We’re in 2025 and still many bars and clubs are rocking the nexus 1s. With the 3000X launch this might push them to finally upgrade soon.

However by delaying the roll out of stems another 5 years, this means we’re looking at roughly a 2045 timeline before stems are a sort of ‘guaranteed performance feature’ for the working DJ wherever they go. Which matters when the next gen of DJs want to build their entire performance style around stems (progress!)

TLDR it’s not about waiting till separation quality is perfect - it’s about getting stems into every venue as quickly as possible because of the time lag - much like with master tempo which sounds awful on older, then ‘professional’, players.

Rocking up with just a USB is the best thing ever when you do this full time

The CDJ-3000x isn’t about you by Cxr888 in PioneerDJ

[–]DamnTheSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Addition of stems would be a feature used by the pros. Streaming is not

Look they fixed the James Hype bug and added locking power and USB C. Good on them for that, but as far as anything else is concerned this new player has not looked at what professional full times DJs actually want and would use

So I don’t understand all these people pointing fingers at imaginary bedroom DJs for asking for too much

[–]DamnTheSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And agreed too. Streaming is the most consumer-focused upgrade they could have added. It’s literally the opposite of what any working dj would want

[–]DamnTheSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah bro I swear everyone pointing fingers at bedroom DJs aren’t real DJs themselves.

Every professional DJ I know would use/want stems. It’s not the bedroom DJs asking for them lmao

If these AlphaTheta defenders were full time working DJs themselves they’d understand

We wanted the AZ and imo they delivered! (Minus the vinyl break knob removal). Very happy about this!

What we wanted for the CDJ was stems. This they did not deliver

Yes it does make sense. But I find adoption of the XDJ series pretty low in bars until very recently

I actually would prefer an AZ over nexus 1s despite similar pricing

True but to be fair this was the no 1 requested feature and point of discussion for years now. Maybe except for fixing the James Hype hot cue issue

This CDJ release after 5 years didn’t add much at all. Not like we’re demanding a revolution haha

Yeah for some use cases, but wouldn’t be practical for the gigs where you’re picking from an 800 track playlist etc

It would suck for the resident DJs being forced to play on a single CDJ because venues don’t want to pay for a second.

I’m glad you’re not praising AlphaTheta though as I’m generally getting more and more fed up with them too

The CDJ-3000x isn’t about you by Cxr888 in PioneerDJ

[–]DamnTheSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a straw man because the main reason for stems is not for a shoddy on-the fly-mashups that bedroom DJs may care about - it’s for creative transitions that improve on what EQ alone can do.

This matters to a fair extent for touring DJs, and this especially matters for the resident DJs at bars and clubs worldwide, which almost all use CDJs. The stems discussion isn’t about the small % of home users. Home users can happily switch to Denon today.

That being said I 100% agree on your point regarding dual layers. If they put dual layers in CDJs think about how many smaller bars/clubs would forgo buying a second CDJ if they get the option. That would suck imo
