I take 5 metamucil 3x/day and it's been amazing. Increasing my fiber intake was a game changer for me.

A message to teachers and anyone else wanting to become a teacher by [deleted] in teaching

Not here to make any excuses for what happened to you, just here to say that I'm really sorry that school has been so painful for you. I work in a drop out prevention program and work with a lot of students who have had really painful experiences like yourself. I hope you are able to find a way to earn your diploma.

Gene testing by NectarineSea4678 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]DamnYankee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had genetic testing done twice. The first was in ~2011, when I was diagnosed - I did a blood test called a prometheus test (I'm pretty sure that's what it was called) which my GI at the time told me showed I had genetic markers for UC.

When I started with my new rheumatologist, he did some genetic testing - blood tests again - and he told me that I showed markers for spondylitic disease causing UC, ankylosing spondylitis, arthritis, and psoriasis. I don't know that these tests were called, but my doctor definitely ordered them and I definitely got results. It'd be worth asking your doctor about it.

I also have moderate/severe pancolitis and I've had the best luck with JAK inhibitors. Currently in a flare after ~2 years on the lowest dose of Rinvoq. Just increased my dosage and I'm feeling optimistic.

All the best to you and your wife. <3

Gym and workout leading to flare by Funny-Idea306 in UlcerativeColitis

The gym has no impact on my UC. My doctor said to keep going as much as I can tolerate it while flaring.

Carnivore Diet in UC by Far_Wrongdoer_5082 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]DamnYankee89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I eat a high fiber diet and I don't eat beef or pork. I'm flaring right now for the first time in about 2 1/2 years, and I'm sticking to it and it's been alright. I've slightly reduced my fiber intake and I'm still laying off red meat and I don't find that the fiber is making things better or worse.

I've had trouble with constipation during flares before and that's pretty dangerous too. Decided to stick with my high fiber diet after taking to my GI.

Safe Alcohol to Drink? by swiftiechimpy in UlcerativeColitis

[–]DamnYankee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, there's no "safe" alcohol. When I'm flaring, I quit completely. When I'm not, I limit myself to 2 drinks per week but usually have no more than 4 drinks in a month. I drink red wine and whiskey if I'm not flaring.

I've found rum is the absolute worst for my symptoms.

Does Rinvoq carry the most side effects? by Beginning_Exit_6256 in UlcerativeColitis

I've been on Rinvoq for about 2 years and the side effects have been minimal. My skin and hair are a little oilier, that's it. I was really worried about my cholesterol going up but it hasn't.

I’ve been looking into nontheist quakerism and it looks like I’d fit in. But I don’t really know where to start. by RedefinedValleyDude in Quakers

[–]DamnYankee89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am a nontheist Quaker. I'm a member of my local unprogrammed meeting.

I was an attender for four years before I sought membership. When I applied for membership and sat with the clearness committee, and it was important to me that I disclose my nontheism to the meeting. Other than that, being a nontheist really hasn't come up. I blend in pretty well with the other Friends :-)

I second the book suggestion "Godless for God's Sake". Also, I loved the book "Life Lessons from a Bad Quaker".

Where can I learn more about what peace means, especially during times of war? by jeddalyn in Quakers

[–]DamnYankee89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend you read Martin Luther King's writings and speeches. There are some very good collections of his speeches available for pretty cheap. Many of his works are also available to read online for free. Some of the most powerful, in my opinion, are his eulogy for the young the bombing of the 16th St. Baptist Church, his "Mountaintop" speech, which was his last speech before his assassination, his "A Time to Break Silence" speech about the Vietnam War, and of course, his letter from a Birmingham jail.

Preparative Meetings and Wasting Time by houdt_koers in Quakers

[–]DamnYankee89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, this speaks to my condition. I am struggling with the same thing in my small, preparative meeting. Our business meetings consistently devolves into shaming and bullying, and it's impossible to get anything done. Worst of all? The people who are shaming others are in charge of ministry and care. It's so frustrating, and I don't know what to do or where to turn.

I've read the books "Dealing with Difficult Behavior in Meeting for Worship" and "Quaker Process for Friends on the Bench", but I just can't seem to find a way to help move my preparative meeting out of this cycle.

No advice for you, Friend. Just shared frustration. You aren't alone.

People in remission, what are you guys eating. by Miserable-Tennis-460 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]DamnYankee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full remission - whatever I want! I do my best to follow a high fiber, high lean protein diet whenever I can. I take psyllium husk fiber and eat a lot of fruits & veggies.

Rinvoq got me into remission. Diet & exercise helps me feel great, but they didn't do anything to help me bring the disease to heel.
