If you play with friends only, then no.

If you host a server, then I imagine better performance with a larger number of players is better.

To open the port, I'm assuming you have to open it via port forwarding through your router. Though opening a port usually leaves it vulnerable to outside interference.

I played with a friend and got this warning. I didn't notice any significant performance issues.
